I remember when I was 18yo and I first told my parents I'm gonna learn Japanese. They both laughed at me and said (in french because I'm french) "I give you one week to give up". My brothers said "we both know you will never speak Japanese lol" At this time I just silently thought they are right. But honestly, I was passionate about this language. And I didn't give up so easily. Now I'm 23yo, my boyfriend is Japanese, I'm near to be fluent, and I'm leaving France next April for living in Japan. That's the definition of : Work in silence and let your success speak lol. Good luck everyone, sometimes even the people who should be the most supportive with you are not, and it's okay. The most important is to be passionate about your things!! (it reminds me the song of Moondog "Do your thing"!)

What you said about being fragile at early stages of language learning really hit me because it is true for a lot of things in life. When you try something new, people can easily discourage you because you yourself have doubts. It is best to stick to it until it starts working out before you start listening to what ppl have to say about it.

Not wrong in the least with third-party sabotage. I have my college teacher discouraging me from learning Mandarin because of videos like ‘Language: Crash Course Psychology #16’ emphasizing difficulty of recognizing phoneme subtlety in other languages because of her personal bias towards my family court case. No, get the most important words of the language out of the way. There are many options and what you pick isn't that important as most core decks (most common words in the language) share many similarities, but you should pay attention to two things: 1. No more than a few thousand cards. It is critical to not spend too much time on core decks and move on to mining (explained in detail on this site). That is not happening any time soon if you are doing Core30k. 2. Cards should be voiced. Make no mistake; you are still mostly incapable of correctly perceiving said language sounds and only thousands of hours of auditory input will fix that. A core deck with audio by natives in said language is a good way to start.

I feel like I don't understand how to properly do immersion. I tried learning a language for nearly 2 years, and got no where, and I did listen to podcasts, watched videos and movies, all in the language. It felt useless though because I felt like after a while I just stopped paying attention since I couldn't understand what was being said. Like is there any benefit to just passively listening to a language you don't understand, and if not, how do you actively listen when you don't understand what's being said?

sure, but immersion on its own, naturally words will become to have more meaning and sound less and less like running sentences that never end. i did immersion of like 4-6hours each day for like two weeks and I went from understanding 2 percent to about 15. since i'm still a student, i get discouraged every day by my peers. They'll make fun of you for attempting to learn a language other than Spanish (I'm in an area where that's the only other language that's "useful" to know). However, despite the harsh words they throw my way, I try my best to ignore them and keep working. It's quite funny considering that sometime in the future, they'll see themselves and where I'm at. Since Japanese is VERY, VERY hated where i am, I found it super hard to focus when people made fun of me for it. I'm doing what I enjoy, and what I'm happy with, so no matter what ANYONE SAYS, I'll keep working. I want you to also keep working and trying your best no matter what because, at the end of the day, who's winning? Because the one spending their time mocking you, and making fun of you for learning a language is getting nothing out of it. If you keep working while they're busy mocking, you can show them that nothing can stop you! now, you GOT this, and just remember, there's an entire COMMUNITY of people out there that speak that language, and just imagine all the food you can eat, all the culture you can experience, the friends you could make. It's worth it. I'm sure it is. :)

I’d say that if you’re a complete beginner, learn how to read the script first and have some basic to intermediate vocabulary before having your phone in that language. I found that it really does help in immersion, but it could be too overwhelming for a beginner to dive in to immediately.

With the first point, I've told many people that I'm learning Japanese and the vast majority of them have been very supportive. It has even influenced my mom and one of my friends to start on their own language learning journey. So I'd say take that piece of advice with a grain of salt, personally.

I totally agree dude. This is part of the main reason why I've pardoned, downgraded, or excused several "friends" from my life's path. #OmitNeysayers #CtlAltDelNeysayers #ForGiveMeUniverseForNotBeingSorryForTakenAction
