You get home. Feed the kids. Get them to bed. Grab some popcorn, or carrot sticks (whatever you're into) and flop down in that nice, comfy recliner. You watch a few of your favorite Recharge videos on RU-vid ( • Relieve Your Back Pain... ), then read a book, send some emails and an hour later you stand up.
Something isn't right though. Your back feels tighter, your leg feels crampy and the first few steps feel like 🤬. What happened? You were so relaxed! The Recharge-HoCo CrossFit​ videos were soooo good.
Let's breakdown why your back hurts after sitting in the recliner.
NOTE: This is for people who are intolerant to a certain sitting position. Recliners will NOT injure your back (unless you have an unfortunate recliner incident at which point you are on your own). You do not to be afraid of your recliners. This video is to help you understand why your back may have hurt or continues to hurt if you sit in your recliner for prolonged periods.

My back was killing me from sitting in a "quality recliner"....and getting worse. I started a stretching and strengthening routine and got a new chair....I am now pain free.

A couple months out and still pain free and the exercises and stretches I did were, by and large, what I learned from Bob &Brad, btw.

I sit in a recliner during the Winter months in the room that I have a woodstove in, and just a few days ago that horrible pain started in the lower left back and hip. I started doing some stretches and also putting a pillow behind the small of my back and it seems to be helping.

Glad to hear you're finding relief. One of life's simple pleasures is enjoying heat from a wood stove during the winter months. Hope you can continue to enjoy that.

@@Rechargexfit Thanks! I was wondering if I should just use 1 small pillow in the small of my back or use 2, one down low and one above that so more of my back is supported?

My recliner broke, so bought a new one, and the new one is killing my back.

New prolonged positions can take a bit of time for your tissues to adjust to. But if your back is still bothering you after a few days, better to get it checked out by a physical therapist in your area.

The back of my recliner, where my back touches the chair, sinks in To far like there's no springs in it

Might be time for a new chair. If going with a reclining option, consider a chair and ottoman. That way you have more options to move around.

@@Rechargexfit A physical therapist is nothing more than a person that makes you stretch out sore muscles. Some times you just need to rest them. You do not exercise a broken bone or a wound. Let it heal, do not push past the pain, instead compromise with it. You can make back pain worse by stretching to much when its crying,, let me rest, give me a break. Slow down find out which movements hurt, and transfer some of that work to other muscles as it heals. Try placing a small folded wash cloth at the point of back pain to support the tired muscle when sitting down. You will know when the thickness is correct when it hurts the least.

A Physical therapist will evaluate you specifically and decide whether your injury or discomfort requires therapy as in massages, aromatherapy, yoga, exerciseor simply rest. Don't believe random people on the internet. Even a professional making videos won't know how to treat you without seeing you face to face.

Bad recliner = back pain, shop around.. a couch kills my back. Clearly video made by someone without back pain.

It has less to do with the chair, and more with the position your body is put in. This video is speaking towards sciatic nerve tension in a recliner because of the positioning. You can experience discomfort from couches, car seats, etc. But again, pain is unique to each of us. Your experience is unique to your situation. Hope you were able to figure it out and sort out your pain.

Recharge speaking as a person that worked in construction 35 years and being 6,2. All recliners are built different, and impossible to sit in a correct position in the wrong chair. Just as soft bed mattress are comfortable to some and not others .. in your narrow narrative of course it hurts to sit or stand wrong , just as it hurts to pick up 100 pounds to some and others it’s simple. A strong back can sit most anywhere or lift most anything. Recliners are meant to rest a tired back after a hard day. And the wrong recliner is useless in any position if the back needs rest support.

robert mccully You are right about recliners. The video isn’t about recliners as much as it is to highlight the position the body is in while sitting in a recliner pose. Pain is complex and experienced different by each person. We’ve treated and helped people suffering variety of issues that are similar yet are felt very different. How do you define a “strong” back? What is a strong back? Is it spinal stability? Is it supporting musculature? Is it the ability of your nervous system to perform a movement when you need to without pain? And similarly what is a tired back? Is it the muscles after you’ve fatigued them? Tired shouldn’t mean painful. You’ve brought up and highlighted an important point in the variability of pain. It’s difficult to contextualize perfectly everyone’s experience with pain in one video. Take a look at some of our other videos regarding back pain. Let us know what you think.

@@Rechargexfit Asking what a tired or sore back is.. Discomfort or pain. Injury is another problem. Our body's were designed to heal them self's in most cases. Some people heal better than others, some parts never heal, and some parts need to be removed, but in the end all body's fail eventually. Pain is a signal something is wrong so please rest me, support me and so on. However being treated by a doctor that has never had back pain is like asking advise on how add spices to food to a cook that has never done so. If there are 100 doctors in a room , 1 is the best, and 1 is the worst, and the rest all fit somewhere in between. If i had a choice i would pick the doctor that has had back pain and understands it.
