If you’re asking yourself ‘what’s the cause of my knee pain?’ or ‘what kind of knee pain do I have?’ (so that you can look up solutions to your knee pain on RU-vid) the position of your knee pain will tell you a lot.
THE MOST COMMON KNEE PAIN TYPES?
Knee pain during running (or actually kneecap pain while running) is usually just that… Runner’s Knee (PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN SYNDROME, or it’s old name: Chondromalacia Patella) If you get knee pain while cycling it will often be the same thing. Same with knee pain with stairs.
Knee pain while squatting could be Runner’s Knee, but if you get pain in the tendon below the kneecap, it’s more likely to be Patellar Tendonitis or Jumper’s Knee.
Meniscus Tears will give you pain on the inside of the knee that is a localised pain, can feel as if it gets stuck, or feel like it’s going to give way, and often it’s hard to fully straighten or fully bend your knee.
Knee pain on the outside of the knee is usually Iliotibial Band Syndrome
ALSO COVERED:
Infrapatellar Fat Pad Syndrome (Hoffa's Syndrome)
Osgood-Schlatter Disease
Medial Collateral Ligament Tear
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Osteoarthritic Knee Pain
Pes Anserine Bursitis.
Quadriceps Tendinopathy
Popliteus Strain
Baker’s Cyst
ACL Or PCL Tear/Rupture

Omg . You are amazing at explaining all the knee pains. I've done every injury to both of my knees From breaking my knee, ACL, PCL in both knees smashing my knee cap you name it I've had it. I've had loads of surgery and years of physio over the years this mostly to sport and some silly moments in my life. I just trying to stop the pain and how not to aggravate my knees, shopping trolleys after worst and shiny floors as well as high heels your small adjustments makes a massive difference I think how you explained the pain in the knee has been very helpful and more of it should be in doctors surgeries to help patients Thank you and keep up the good work

I was told by my consultant that I was the first woman in Shropshire to do double ACL. He had contacts with professional brace makers and I had to special braces made very lightweight I could carry on working wearing them,even on the trampoline and the other sports. @@Msteez Runner's knee. Used to run when younger, started doing strength exercises (including lots of squats) and started getting a pain at my knee-cap. Turns out cycling for 6 hours a week and doing lots of squats can lead to interesting results... massaging the quad and a few stability exercises fixed it.
@Msteez
@Msteez Год назад
@@adam346 can you share what the stability exercises were?
@adam346
@adam346 Год назад
@@Msteez I used boards to angle my feet to 25 degrees (more or less) and did squats that way, bout 15 x 3 sets a day to start and did some quad extensions on a machine at the gym mostly. I also think that slow-down in intensity probably allowed it to heal more than the actual building of stability... getting old sucks. Am 36 btw and worked out/did sports my entire life so knee pain is not unusual but I would prefer to not have it if at all possible... I also started skating again so not sure if that had something to do with it.

Thank you for a concise explanation of the possibilities. I wouldn't say any of these match mine, though. I have always been active through sports and outdoor activities, so at age 60+ my joints have seen their share of use. I have noticeable general swelling across the knee above the joint, stiffness to the point of limited motion, and a pain throughout the joint when under stress to the point I no longer trust a natural stride on stairs. An orthopedic surgeon took x-rays and diagnosed reduced cartilage to a point of near bone-on-bone and the associated joint irritation. I don't understand though the soft tissue issues surrounding the joint.
@BodyFixExercises
@BodyFixExercises Год назад
General swelling, stiffness, and general pain certainly sounds like osteoarthritis. This puts stress on the local soft tissue, for sure, and can result in inflammation too. Osteoarthritis is hard to help. Decreasing any foot over-pronation, and any reduced ankle mobility, might help.

It lingered though and happened 2 more times in the next couple months. It eventually went away to the point where I forgot about it, so I joined a jiu jitsu class and literally the first time I bent down my knee locked up so I once again kinda kicked it out but I did as discretely as possible bc it was embarrassing to be the new guy and cant straighten his leg before he gets to practice anything! I was diagnosed after many many years with PFS. The best way to describe the pain is like my knee caps are burning when I do squats, walk up stairs etc. I workout but find leg days challenging when they include lots of squats, lunges etc. Working on strengthening my glutes and abductors (outside ones?) as they are weak and my previous physio said that was contributing to the pain. Definitely quad dominant, although they also hurt during some exercises. Not to mention my right knee sounds like a bowl of rice crispies whenever I have to squat down for anything lol. Just need to find some exercises to help strengthen now which don't take too long as my schedule is already busy!

I just hurt my left knee playing tennis.. I stretched out my left left and went down on my left knee to hit a deckhand and got a SHARP pain through my leg and to my knee, it felt kind of like it locked up or was just EXTREMELY tense and it was really painful. Then I had to do another backhand and I did the same thing and my knee just gave weight and I couldn't support my body weight or put any weight on my left leg, I could barely bend it. I couldn't serve or do more than a 40% bend without having extremely sharp pain. Do I have a tear or what could this be? A bit surprised OCD wasn't on the list. Having had OCD grad iv on both knees for over 20 years i can say i have multiple sorts of pain around knees (and my whole body) since most of exercises are too painful to do. But being under 55 yrs i am glad i have managed this far without knee replacements. When spotted early enough it could have not gotten this bad as releasing tendons would have allowed the knee cap to be on the correct place. But thanks to general doctors if they don't know where/what to look for they tend to classify it as mental problem. Maybe not everywhere but these kind of diagnoses are given often in Finland. Sadly. And now i try to avoid the people in white coats and white uniforms as much as possible.

The meniscus tear is exactly what I have thought I had for years. I fell directly on my knee and heard a pop. This was in 2010. I didn’t have insurance so I never got it checked out. I have a physical job so that knee hurt for about a year. Over the years of strength training it, it only bothers me maybe once a month depending on my activity levels. I even have done multiple half marathon and 1 marathon on it and it’s been not bad. One day I think I’ll have it confirmed with an MRI if it ever gets worse. That spot inside the knee is where the pain originates. Often at night if my leg pillow doesn’t stay in between there that spot will be sore.

Right now it’s been 8 months since I had a motorcycle accident injury to my right knee. No torn meniscus, ACL, or anything else just massive swelling from impact. I’ve been doing physical therapy at home myself. I’ve experienced muscle wasting in the entire right leg loss of about 2 inches circumference around thigh and 1 inch on calf. leg extensions give pain under kneecap when locked. Even right now I can still not touch my heel to my butt , I can only get up 90° then begin to feel a slight ache and very tight in the knee.

I woke up from surgery on a shoulder and started screaming in pain. Despite still being heavily influenced by the anaesthetic I was able to name the area of muscle in pain, the Iliotibial band which must have confused the hell out of the surgery staff. However I trained a ladies soccer team, which included a number of nurses and they taught me what the muscle was that was hurting and how to prepare it for competition. I believe that being on my side for the surgery, the muscle was overstretched for the length of the surgery causing the pain.

Thanks so much for this video, just seen it. 38yr old UK male, had knee MRI 2018 (nothing to see I’m told other than age appropriate wear and tear). Had to stop running five years ago due to awful pain on joint line inner edge, both knees. Ran all my life, was doing two 10ks a week in 2018 after a three year pause and then after three months, bang, unable to walk due to pain and eventually realised it was the running/knees. Stopped that and it went gradually. Have cycled ever since which is fine but doctors told me at the time that it was bursitis - yes the PES was a bit sore but nothing like the whole meniscus. I’d love to be able to run again as the cycling does nothing for my bone density. Interested if you had any pointers.

For inner knee pain like that, on both sides, at your age, with clear MRI... I'd be looking at your feet and hips. These three things will cause inner knee pain: 1. Foot over pronation 2. Restricted ankle movement 3. Also, anything that impacts that spot hurts pretty bad and kinda feel that burning feeling too but only for a few seconds. I didn’t feel this till a week after the collision. Probably Bursitis. Bursa a little sacs of fluid that sit over the knee to stop the tendons from rubbing too much. The impact probably inflamed them. There are various bursa. So, for example, depending on location you make have a bit of Prepatellar Bursitis or Infra patellar bursitis or supra patellar bursitis

Hey Doc Thanks for the video. As far as I manage to understand I have the pain just below the patella tendon at the point it joins with the patella (lower side) and I have problems in my angle (same leg) while I squat it feels tight (my best guess is mobility issue) and I have some stiffness where my femur joins with my pelvis (maybe because of sitting too long with bad posture) I took Vitamin-D with Calcium as it was suggested by an orthopedic but It didn't help. He did some x-rays of my knee and concluded my bones are in good shape and there isn't hairline crack or something of that sort. Is this a mobility issue which can be fixed with exercises? any help will be appreciated and Thanks for the content on RU-vid.

It's hard to say without examining it, but it sounds like the knee issue is coming from the ankle or the hip. This is very common. (Also be aware that flat feet could be the cause.) I'm now beginning to get this pain in the same location but on the left knee. I've just had a full spinal MRI as they think it could be nerve compression due to cancer. I also have Mets throughout my spine and in both hips. Cancer is throughout my skeleton. But this crippling pain is out of this world. I have no medical knowledge whatsoever but I figured it was related to something that goes from my thigh all the way to my ankles as I can touch the specific pain/irritated points as a long line. Now I learned its the IT band issue. @@Ash-xu7nu From what I found researching on my own, you basically have to cut down your run mileage, do some stretching and strengthen the specific muscles/joints around the IT band. Safest is to take a complete break for about 4 weeks. In my case, that's way too long of a break so I kept running but with my runs more than half shorter (depending on when the pain starts). And switching out runs with walks alternate days. Now I'm almost recovered without having to take that long break from working out. If you're interested, just check out my newest upload tomorrow.
