On Today's Episode:
Settling for your day to day routine is one of the best ways to ensure a boring unfulfilled life. When you feel unfulfilled and like everyday is filled with going through the motions, it becomes easy to turn to unhealthy, self-destructive habits. Without understanding why you feel this way, affairs, drugs, and other unhealthy addictions have the opportunity to creep in.
Robert Greene is well known for books that have shaped culture, challenged beliefs and p*ssed quite a few people off. The Daily Laws, Mastery and The 48 Laws of Power are just a few of his bestselling books.
Robert joins Tom in this epic conversation about how to look inward and uncover the root cause of the boredom that leaves you feeling like your just wasting life away. Fulfillment is key if you really want to change your life around. The path to fulfillment involves mastery and Robert breaks down our need for stress in order to get there.

QUOTES:
“...you choose things that aren’t right for you, and when you choose things that aren’t right for you, you’re not engaged emotionally and when you’re not engaged emotionally you get bored…” [2:14]
“The reason you can’t deal with change or you’re not looking at yourself is you have emotional blocks. You’re full of fear.” [12:10]
“What do you think social media is? It’s an engine of envy. It’s making you continually aware of what other people have and what you don’t have.” [27:10]
“Everything you do, everything you breathe in is a desire for power.” [39:20]
“Envy is a huge motivator of people’s behavior now. So the drive to pull other people down is really truly motivated by feelings of envy and inferiority that other people are better than you are.” [44:11]
“They want that fulfillment and I don’t care if they’re born poor and impoverished or they’re homeless, they still have that need and they have that capacity to become a master in what they do.” [49:24]
“What makes you miserable is your self-absorption in many ways.” [56:31]
“The worst form of therapy is to sit there and talk about your problems. The best form of therapy is to get outside of yourself.” [56:38]
“Craftsmanship is a high form of intellect in my viewpoint.” [1:19:58]
“Stress is good for you, [...] stress is great, stress is a wonderful drug if you know how to use it.” [1:25:19]

Robert Greene has profoundly changed the way I understand my own dark side and drive for power and also how to channel it into doing good,while not lying to myself about what it really is..still a drive for power. As a woman its a very challenging thing for people to accept because its viewed as a very masculine trait.. I find his work to be incredibly important on the path to self discovery both my own and other people’s motives. Acceptance of this fact almost exclusively has been the thing that has allowed me to first,break myself down and then to put myself back together differently.. Denying these parts of ourselves is extremely dangerous,but learning to live with both parts of ourselves the light and the darkness allows us to make different choices about how we move through the world..instead of manipulating situations to get what we want,we can learn to channel these parts of ourselves to help other people get what they need and that satiates my desire to go to war for the wrong reasons and instead use it for good.. Thank you Tom for engaging in conversations that aren’t always for the faint of heart..they are so necessary.
@117Industries
@117Industries Год назад
Lol- it’s not a masculine trait. It’s a trait of the living! Pseudo “men” are threatened by this life instinct in others. But some of us accept it as a necessary energy for living things to propagate themselves. Edit: that being said, I do think men tend to be the sex who manifest this in the greatest abundance.
@GP-lg6np

you have to understand that --inherently-most women do not understand the concepts of honor and integrity. I hope the book can help you find those traits

One of the things that I found most frustrating in dealing with a destructive, narcissistic sociopath who was my supervisor was seeking help from a psychological source. He talked to me on the phone and had never met me or seen me. When I tried to explain the work behaviors of the sociopath, he told me that I was upset because I was really seeing myself in the mirror when I was viewing and dealing with the sociopath who took pleasure in destroying others' careers for no other reason than she could do it and she got her jollies from it. I was not and I am not a destructive personality who intentionally hurts others in contrast to those who are and can and do choose to do so not only without any remorse but with enjoyment. It still makes me angry that psychologists (and others) tell people they are sociopaths or psychopaths when they are faced with the career destruction from dealing with one!!!

Envy is a survival mechanism, and is how we learn and improve and derive motivation. Knowing you are envious and trying to tame it might not be such a good idea. Trying to go through life without making others envious can only mean you end up on the lowest of rungs, surely. I don't believe we can really make decisions different to those we are hard-wired to make... Not really anyway.

0:29 get to the *ROOT CAUSE* of your problems ... 1:55 we don't listen to our *IMPULSE VOICES* ... (thanks Robert ! ! !, learnt something new from AM) i can see how this is the Root Cause of *Akrasia* - Acting Against My Better Judgement ... we are "alienated" from who we are ... so we do things Against Our Impulse Voice ... intuition 53:00 Tom's Equation for Fulfillment ... nice to hear it again as reminder E.F. Schumacher has these 3 concepts of *GOOD WORK* - taken from Buddhism 1. provide Essential Goods & Services 2. work in groups to rid Ego 3. the work develops our Faculties 1:21:05 we need *PROGRESS* as a fundamental element of progress ... rememeber school, how every class we learnt something new, imagine repeating every class twice, that would be hell ! ! ! 😀 .

The greatest regret is not trying and failing but it is not to trying at allFunny enough people aspire to emulate great investors and entrepreneurs, of our time but they only see their wins and achievements and they careless about their challenges and failures during multiple trials and the lesson it teaches

I wouldn't agree less but a times we are influenced based on result of what will see and experience, failure at first try doesn't mean it is over but unfortunately people seems to back off when they have experiences some obstacle or failure along the way

The power argument also ties in with what Jordan Peterson preaches. It is about power and the best thing one can aspire to is to be powerful and capable of doing bad things but to voluntarily choose to use it for good.

Thanks men. Robert has reinvented and made my essence in a way I can’t describe. My English is not good enough to put the right words on it. I am solving my family issues with his books and the books of a French man that’s called Prof. Jean Michel Oughourlian….there are many others of course. Thanks again.
