This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

I got a bunch of the plastic cylinders from the inside of a roll of receipt paper. You can cut them down to different sizes and slide them down over the guide rods. Creates an effective stop that keeps the stones from dropping of the edge.

I bought this system about 15ish? years ago, and I’ve never regretted it. It cost me a fortune at the time, and my mounting plate is made of black granite. I also have that leather strops that came with it, and they operate in the same way as the stones. Great system.

My name is Oren and i'm from Israel I'm an avid hunter looked for a knife sharpener for my hunting knives as well as butchering & kitchen knives Most of my collection are made by bark river knives & two randall made large bowie knives.. I’ve watched your videos many times and really liked your explanation.. just ordered the wicked edge 130 with the aluminum base & extra 800 - 1000 diamond stone & 1200/1600 ceramic stones & 3.5/5 micron stropes & 1/4” jaws and angle cube.. The package costs a lot but I hope it will do the job..

Jeremy, I too have been in the Knife and Tool world for over 30 years. I did find one portable system that I got after my first Lansky Sharpener 35 years ago. Two folks, who worked for Lanky in college, wanted him to implement a few changes. He said "No Interest, mine works fine and my customer base is established". They got the blessing to go out on their own and make the GATCO knife sharpener. Still no where close to the quality of this unit but they did, Double the width of the stone (To about the size of what your using), they did build a much longer Guide Rod into a 'Alignment Barrel' in the stone (no more Switching Rods). They did add an Easy Finger Grip on top of the stones, and they do offer a complete Dimond Set with a Ceramic Polish Stone. I think they have retired now but it allowed me to sharpen Knives 4 to 5 times faster in the field, fits under your seat! Thanks for the video, I will check out some more right now!

I have both the Lansky and the Wicked Edge. Comparing the two is like saying an airsoft AR-15 is the same as a SCAR-17. I have scratched both my bevels and flats using the wicked edge. I’m going to wrap those clamps in leather and see if that prevents the scratching.

Hey man, I too have a we and had a lansky, still have the we, not the lansky... I make Knives part time and also have a sharpening service, I use a variety of tools, the we is slow but it works, I have also found that other methods to reduce the majority of the steel and then the we to do the final work, as long as you match the bevels with the angle cube, works well and can cut down the time dramatically (tormek and we), of course this works because I can justify it as a business expense, for the average person wanting a sharp edge it’s not economical. I have also found that the more I used the we the better I got at sharpening on a 2 x 72 grinder, however it leaves more of a toothy edge that the polished we edge. All the best. Shelley

Glad to hear you are exploring other sharpening methods besides the Wicked Edge Gin Mill. I've switched to Japanese water stones and diamond plates and have had the fastest, best results ever. The learning curve wasn't as scary as I made it out to be in my mind. It's all about picking an angle and keeping it throughout the sharpening session. Pretty much comes down to muscle memory and paying attention. 😃

How do you know what angle you're sharpening it at if it's just with feeling?
@robertmycroft8268

Distance does not change an angle. The rake of a home from soffit to ridgeline remains 30 degrees whether it is on a mansion or dollhouse. I believe we learned this during our freshman year of high school?
@JohnDoeEagle1

The belt grinder might be faster for the first sharpening of folders but repeated use will prematurely wear your knives down to nubs. They are more suited for large fixed blade knives that take forever to get sharp on any kind of stone system. For stone systems there are only two and the others fall a longways behind. The Wicked Edge and Spyderco Sharpmaker are the two best ones by far. Even if you get good on a belt grinder your bevels and angles won't be as precise as a gauged and fixed angle system. Even brand new higher end production knives aren't perfect from the belt grinder sharpening system. The Wicked Edge and Spyderco will be perfect every single time.

Try using a few rubber washers that you use on kydex. Slide them down the rod and stack them just high enough that the stone will not drop onto your bevel. They fit a little tight but I use them and you can adjust the height of the stack for different blade widths really easy. Never scratch your knife again.

I returned my Lansky sharpener that you refer to in this video. But I will say that I use my knife a lot, so it really isn't worth my time to use the Wicked Edge either. I bought the Lansky pocket sharpener and it's so simple and easy to use to maintain a good cutting edge I would be sorely hard pressed to buy the Wicked Edge.... Having said that, I don't make knives or mass produce knives. And your knives look amazing! Good video!

Respect. I tried stones a few times, but I have a very hard time maintaining a consistent angle. Especially since I'm moving the knife away from me or towards me, and need to maintain that exact angle over so many iterations. I'm sure it'll come with practice, but since I happen to be good with the belt grinder, I never bothered. But still, it's a skill worthy of admiration.

I had a WE a few years ago, then I tried my friend Edge Pro Apex...then I never wanted to use the WE ever again. I sold it on eBay for close to what I paid and used half the money to buy the Edge Pro. Its quicker, easier to use, and I got much sharper knifes then I ever did on the WE. If you want a great sharpener but don’t want to spend a fortune go Edge Pro.

yes knife edge angle stays constant, this is because sharpening stones move in a circular 2d FLAT PLANE (keyword), yes , angle between moving 1d rod and vertical 2d plane knife body changes, but the rod is not perpendicular to 1dimensional straight knife edge, which acts as the 1d line of intersection between 2 2d flat planes, the angle between any 2 2d flat plans will always stay constant, it's important to keep tract of what angle changes (or not) in what axis , , please correct if i made mistake

Great video, thanks! Like a lot of people, I own a Lansky, well two of them to be exact. I bought two because I got the diamond stone version first, then I found out that the diamond stones just do not last very long, so I bought one with the regular stones when I found them on sale. I've been pretty happy with the regular stone version so far. I'd love to have a Wicked Edge sharpener, but they are so overpriced IMO that I just won't even consider buying one. The sharpener that I'd really love to have is the TSPROF Sharpener from Russia. Yes it is expensive too, BUT you get a lot more for your money. All that being said, I will just stick with my Lansky sharpeners, I can get my knives sharp enough to shave with, with them and that's sharp enough for me.

How's the ken onion working out? I'm thinking of getting one. I have the paper wheels mounted on a bench grinder with buffing compound on one and a fine jewelers grit on the other. Works pretty good but if you want to use grinding wheels you have to swap them out.
@rozhy2k
@rozhy2k 5 лет назад
Too bad you didn't give a go to the TSPROF sharpener. I own one and it is a very versatile and accurate sharpener. The best thing about it is that you can stuff pretty much any stone in it. Hair splitting sharpness (I mean literally) on a knife is a common thing for me now. And yes, stock stones are crap and even though you could still get same hairsplitting sharpness with them, you do need to get something else.

These sharpeners do a great job, but it's always a big project to get it out, set it up and go through the process. I've found the bench grinder/MDF wheel is way more convenient. I have a $100 (new) 6" Dewalt bench grinder outfitted with $30 paper wheels, that permanently lives in a kitchen cabinet. Whenever a blade needs a touchup I can pull the grinder out, plug it in, touch up a couple edges and put the grinder away....all in less than 2 minutes. It's just way more convenient.

I would bet Clay started with the Lansky System design principle and took it to another level. Pitted against an older Lansky system and someone that knows how to use it well, the actually cutting and durability results it would be very, very close. The difference in price thus makes the choice a no-brainer. Still...if you have the money and want the 'ultimate' knife sharpening system........

Hi Jeremy, great video and agree that the WE works really well. I took the plunge about a year ago and haven't regretted it. One question - have you ever replaced the 'stones'? I had a situation where my 600 grit stones rubbed against each other (transporting in a box) and it seems like they are now 2000 grit. Stones (over here in the UK) are about £60 a set.

I brought a gen 1. Both locking bolts stripped our, one screw in the vice jaws snapped. The diamond stones where binned wore quickly for expensive chosera stones that all cracked and they cost more than wicked edge. One clamp only not great for chief knives due to blade flex. If your reviewing this after two years you should at least explain the cone of sharpening for the curved tip of the blade especially if you use larger knives as the cone angle is shallow for wicked edge due to short length of the arm back edge pro long arm long arch and radius better for big knives.

@GetMeThere1

The simple fact is that if you are scratching the entire bevel and the width of the secondary bevel is the same all along the edge (and the blade thickness just beyond the bevel is the same all along the edge, which it invariably is), then the bevel angle is the same along the edge. Besides, if the bevel angle DID change (consistently) by a couple of degrees along the edge -- it wouldn't matter anyhow. If you're making a true burr you are making a true apex, and if you're making a true apex you're making a sharp edge.
@EvenTheDogAgrees
@EvenTheDogAgrees 5 лет назад
8:44 - I don't think you're going to have to adjust the things once set; it's not like you're ever going to sharpen knives that differ so much in blade size that a setting that works for one is unusable for another. But if you don't feel like marring your rods, just use some tubing as a sleeve, resting it against the pivot rather than screwing it down. You could cut a few to different lengths to accommodate your different blades, if you find one size doesn't fit all after all.
@Prouderlib
@Prouderlib 4 года назад
3:34 “I use this less and less”, I’m not sure if this is so much a review on how this has held up over the last couple of years. Would of been nice to hear about the wear after “using” the system on a regular basis, you know if it is still worth the expense after 2 years of consistent use? Just a thought.

Jeremy, let me know if you have any thoughts on this, if you have time. I sharpened a knife on my grinder yesterday (first time) belt running backwards. The cutting edge was 25 degrees on top of a 20 degree relief bevel, the main bevel is hollow-ground. The knife was getting hung up on regular A4 lined paper, and yet it shaved hair off my arm and was also able to lacerate deep into my finger! I give up sometimes! Sharpening has to be one of the more frustrating steps for me, because by this point it’s not the same as a warp or a failed heat-treatment, the knife is done 😡. I may get a wicked edge, but man, 💰 💰 💰.

Just sleeve a piece of brass tube over it. I doubt you'd need different lengths to begin with, but even if you do, cutting up a few different length tubes ain't too much of a hassle. The tube would slide over the rod and rest against the bolt on the pivot end. No screwing stuff to your rod, no risk of marring.

I make a lot of woodworking marking knives and Kardashi style blade knives will the 130 sharpen these blades, given the odd angle?

I've always wondered if using a belt grinder to sharpen, if you heat the edge too much, won't that ruin the heat treat?

Say someone doesn't have a belt grinder and doing everything with just hand tools. Would this be capable of filing in the edge bevels?

I was just wondering if the angle it has engraved is the total angle or the angle for one side of the knife edge

Thank you for the video. Total amateur here! Have a SOG pocket knife with a slight recurve and VG10 steel. I’ve got this thing shaving hair quite well but can’t seem to get that razor blade fall through paper sharpness. With 1000 grit, is this possible ? Curious how many swipes in general it takes per stone? Thank you again, I appreciate any feedback!

The wicked edge isn't bad, but it's not worth the price. I spent a little over 1500 on my wicked edge (pro pack 3, then a few different strops and chosera stones) and it was pretty nice. I got the TSprof soon after and ended up liking it more than the Wicked Edge. For quite a few reasons. The TSprof can handle larger blades, has a wider variety of clamp options, and because it uses the same size stones as the edge pro, it has a ton of stone and strop options that just aren't available on the wicked edge. Nowadays, I use the Edge Pro Professional, Edge Pro Apex, and TSprof. I leave the Apex in my car in case I need to sharpen something when not at home, the TSprof is used for most of my sharpening, and I keep the Edge Pro Professional around in case I need to sharpen something that doesn't like being clamped. Because the edge pro and tsprof both use 1x6 stones, I didn't mind shelling out for the full range. I have 2 sets of the standard edge pro stones, a set of choseras, a set of shapton glass stones, and all of the edge pro diamond matrix stones (the matrix stones are absolutely amazing). If you were gonna buy the Wicked Edge, I urge you to look at the tsprof instead. The full K03 kit is only $840 and you can use whatever stones you want.

I own a lansky type sharpener. I have never really liked it. That said, my only issues with this type is that the stones never seen long enough and I have the (unproven) idea in my head that a perfectly flat bevel is inferior to a convex bevel (rounded) . I like to think that I get a more rounded blade edge on regular flat Stone ( I like diamonds) sharper. I have yet to invest in a high quality sharpening system. BTW, how do you think this unit would perform on large kitchen knives? Is there a length limit?
