It was Marko's choice. During lockdown he probably was depressed and decided he didn't like the way the musicians were ripped off by management etc. They have done recent concerts without Marko and they have been excellent. Great stand in bassist Jukka from Wintersun. Try watching Hellfest late June 2022. Amazing..

It wasn't just the musicians, it was also his 2nd family.. everyone in the Nightwish Organization, right down to the newest employee, we're severely impacted. Pretty much the case for the entire industry. There is no compensation unless it's possible, but in reality, it's not. Some bands are lucky enough to make great money, but they can't pay people out from their own pockets for that amount of time. It was the same with most bands, crews, etc. I'm sure they floated their fair share of people, but Covid. Plus, record execs for the most part, just don't care. They're in it, without the talent of the artists they are supposed to "protect", to vacuum up every penny.

@@millerbeer01 He left after his good friend Alexi Laiho passed, he didn´t think the lifestyle was worth the health risks suffering from Chronic Depression. He put out an official statement but initially Alexis death probably was the reason. Life before Grind. Good for you Marko! We still see your excellent work and singing and love you!

@@lkesha82 Of course you are right. Fortunately Tarja might be unique but Floor is better. Jukka is unique but Kai is an equally skilled but different style of drummer. Marko is special as he was not only a great bassist but also a good guitarist and vocalist.

Currently their touring bassist is Jukka Koskinen from the band Wintersun, which is also where they snagged Kai (drummer) from. Not be confused with their own former drummer Jukka Nevelainen, Jukka isn't a permanent member at this point, but he may become one. For live shows, Troy has been doing male backing/harmony vocals, or Floor has been doing them herself (like in Planet Hell, for example). Pretty sure I legit cried when I read Marco left. But he needs to take care of himself first and foremost.

@@millerbeer01 I've only heard him do backing vocals and growls, and haven't ever heard him sing cleanly. To pronounce it, the first "C" is like a "Ts" sound, then you roll the "r" right into the "n", then you say "koh", then the "vic" is said "veech". So all together it's "Ts-rrrn-koh-veech". Others have given the details of Marko's departure. I think he just needed a break. He is in his late 50's and has been a touring musician since the 80's so he is taking a well deserved rest. No animosity in the departure. Obviously the rest of the band would prefer he stay but they understand and support his decision to look out for himself. He has been repalced by Jukka Koskinen from the band Wintersun. Same band Kai was in previously. Another awesome Finnish symphonic/prog metal band. You should checkout Time or Sons of Winter and Stars, live at Sonic Pump Studios for some epic, very technical guitar and drums.

The second spoken part roughly translates to "If I play the chorus, you're gonna sing along, right?" - "Yeah!" - "Are you sure?" - "Yeah!" - "Ok, let's do it" Emppu got to take a break for this song. The 'Beast' is Marko's custom Warwick bass and Framus guitar. (Same company owns both brand names.) I think it's piezo pickups that give the guitar neck that sound. You are right about it being a whistle that Troy is playing, an Irish Low whistle. Jukka Koskinen from Wintersun is currently the touring bassist. Marko's resignation letter is posted on the Nightwish website.

Emppu, the guitar player used to be in another band too, Brother Firetribe which is a direct translation of a former Finnish tennis player Veli Paloheimo. Their style is mostly aor, super cool and catchy songs. Heart Full of Fire (feat. Anette Olzon) is definitely worth checking out for. There are many others, but start with that.

"Resignation announcement from Marko" with his own words. The music for this song "The Islander" by Marko. The song did not fit Marko's band Tarot, so Tuomas thought it could be a Nightwish song, and he wrote the lyrics for it. Marko has written parts for many Nightwish songs. Music together with Tuomas to "My Walden", "Weak Fantasy" (according to Tuomas Marko is the main composer), "The Greatest Show on Earth". Lyrics together with Tuomas to Weak Fantasy and "Yours is an Empty Hope". All the info above was in the credits of the Tampere 2015 concert, where this video you just reacted to is from. I think Marko has written parts for "7 days to the Wolves" and "While Your Lips Are Still Red". It's not easy to find exact info about who did what song by song. Often times it's just: Songwriters Tuomas Holopainen, Marko Hietala. Marko has done postproduction sound mixing at least for Nightwish concert videos, maybe for albums as well. After Marko left Nightwish he sang one song on a Therion album. He appeared on Waltari's video "Below Zero" and Mika Jaakkola's video "Soita". Last summer he performed two songs with his brother Zachary, the guitarist, in his home town Kuopio at Henry's Pub's burial, caused by Covid. Last weekend he performed with "Northern Kings" at Tuska Metal Festival in Helsinki Finland. Northern Kings is Marko and three other male vocalists + band performing covers. I think Marko, once again, did a part of the traditional "Raskasta Joulua" (Heavy Xmas) tour as well. Metal musicians performing traditional Xmas songs with heavier arrangements. Floor has been on stage a few times, once very much pregnant.

Marko left NW because of personal reasons. For a long time he wasn't happy with the music industry. On their website is the letter he wrote, explaining all. He place is filled, as a session bassist, by Jukka Koskinen from the Finnish band Wintersun, the same band that Kai Hahto the drummer came from.

Nightwish is for all practical purposes Tuomas' band, though Emppu is also the only remaining founding member. IIRC, Nightwish have had one keyboardist, one lead guitarist, two rhythm guitarists, two drummers, three bassists, three male and three female vocalists, and one multi-instrumentalist. There are crossovers with single individuals holding more than one role at a time.

Marco is and always has been a Warwick bass sponsored player, that "Monster" Marco himself calls the instrument Is half Warwick bass, and guitar section I can't remember what it was. Tank the tech revealed what was the guitar part. But it was some other Germany manufacturer that Warwick bought after it went bankrupt. So it's natural that Warwick made such a bass/guitar for Marco since same company now make both instruments.

You are officially a bad ass when you’re all alone on stage playing in front of thousands of people, then Floor Jansen sings backup for you. Marko will be missed, but Jukka, the new bassist is starting to meld with the band and is really good on bass but doesn’t sing with them, at least not yet. Marko actually was not an original member either, having replaced Sammy Vänskä in 2001. Check out (or more) from their performance just a week or two ago at Hellfest in France. There is a professional quality version of that whole show on RU-vid. Keep enjoying Nightwish!

Marco's statement Dear people. I am leaving Nightwish and my public life. For a quite a few years now I haven’t been able to feel validated by this life. We have streaming company big guns demanding 9/5 work from artists of inspiration while unfairly sharing the profits. Even among the artists. We’re the banana republic of the music industry. Biggest tour promoters squeeze percentages even from our own merchandise while paying dividends to Middle East. Apparently some theocracies can take the money from the music that would get you beheaded or jailed there without appearing as hypocrites. Just a couple of examples here. This past year forced me to stay home and think. And I found myself very disillusioned about these and a lot of things. I found out that I am in need of that validation. For me to write, sing and play, I need to find some new reasons and inspirations. ”My Walden” so to speak. And it’s even in my book that I’m a chronic depressive. It’s dangerous for me and the people around me, if I continue. Some of the thoughts a while back were dark. Don’t worry, I’m fine. I have my two sons, a wife, the rest of the family, friends, a dog and lots of love. And I don’t think that I’ll be gone for good. Conspiracy is the word of the day. For the people who like them I need to say that my 55th birthday is now on 14th of Jan and I’ve certainly done my time for now. Blaming for instance Tuomas is an insult to both him and my free thinking. This is a very sad thing to all of us too. Have a care please. But of course now we’ll know, if some go there on purpose. There are a couple of things agreed on that I will do on 2021. Otherwise I kindly and with respect ask the media, bands, artists projects etc. to not ask me for anything within the next year. I have some reinventing to do. I hope to tell you about it on 2022. It’s not a promise though. I am so sorry about this. Marko Hietala

marko left coz depression (thats the biggest reason) nightwish have new bassist jukka with wintersun band. marko never come back anymore in nightwish even many people here thinking that possibility. i think end of this season they make jukka permanently band member and pretty sure they put him singing also they next album then. thanx to great reaction and have wonderful day there.

Marko retired, not just from Nightwish but from public life overall. His press release is on his youtube channel. ru-vid.comcommunity He made it pretty clear it had nothing to do with band relationship . He did a few small gigs with his brothers, produced a beautiful solo album and faded away. Tuomas has said if anything happens with Floor, that's it for the band. i guess auditioning sopranos is a lot of work.

It is over 5 hour road trip from Kitee to Tampere. Kitee is very close to Russian border, Tampere is kinda western Finland. Nightwish have started world tours many times from Joensuu which is really close to Kitee, under one hour drive. Marco is from Kuopio, eastern Finland and about 200km from Kitee.

Great reaction! The Islander is one of my all-time favorite Nightwish songs because it’s so deep and profoundly sad. Their music video of this song with lyrics on is worth a reaction video from you guys as the deeper meaning can be more appreciated in that one. It’s basically about an old lighthouse operator who once had a wife and kids that are all passed away. He is now at the end of his days and in the video he is “one of the world’s unseen” so he decides to take his own life to rejoin his family in the afterlife. But as dark as that story is, it is told with a measure of hope for his souls rebirth and rejuvenation (implied by the hopeful tone at the end). Here’s the link to that music video. I saw Marco once say in a documentary about Finnish metal music that Nightwish sings Finnish Folk songs/music. I suspect a lot of the early songs may have drawn on old folk stories and fantasy stories.

I don't know why I found it so funny when he said Marko isn't in the band anymore and she's like: *processing....* W-why? *Still processing...* Yeah it was quite shocking for me to know that as well but I'm one of those who still wants to believe he'll be back, once he feels better, if not, Nightwish has a new bassist and it's pretty good in my opinion (and here it shows how biased I am with Marko lol)

🤘🔥🤘 Cool Reactions! Marco left Nightwish in January of 2021. He was in Nightwish for 20 years. His absence is deafening. We seen Nightwish in concert back in May and there were quite a few fans calling out his name. Floor has tried to cover his vocal parts but it's not as good. This song is Marco at his melodic best.

It is hard for any singer even if you are as amazing as Floor to compensate the absence of another singer especially with the contrast between their voices. They were so amazing together. Floor and Marko as singers are so hard to replace. I heard quite a few growling male singers like Marko but it is more typical death metal male singers. Not as interesting to listen to as Marko. Floor will also be impossible to replace if you want someone who can do the same. Both are just so unique and special and the harmony between them was so amazing. Don’t know if Marko ever will come back completely but if not I hope he returns just to do like 1 or 2 songs in a concert as a special guest. PS: My favorite Marko song is “While your lips are still red”

He has the option from Tuomas to come back but it has been a year and a half since he left the band. He was not an original member. Tarja, Emppu, and Tuomas founded the band in 1996. Marko came on in late 2000 or early 2001. Ever hopeful he will return. The new bassist, Jukka from Wintersun, has not been made a full member of the band as of yet. Kai, the drummer and full member of the band, was also from Wintersun. The band sings about evolution.....and continues to EVOLVE.

FYI Marko had to learn how to sing again after his throat surgery was fubared. Marko just got tired of the big wigs in the music industry. He also won the Masked Singer of Finland just before he quit.Tuomas and Emppu are the only originals left.

Dear people. I am leaving Nightwish and my public life. For a quite a few years now I haven’t been able to feel validated by this life. We have streaming company big guns demanding 9/5 work from artists of inspiration while unfairly sharing the profits. Even among the artists. We’re the banana republic of the music industry. Biggest tour promoters squeeze percentages even from our own merchandise while paying dividends to Middle East. Apparently some theocrasies can take the money from the music that would get you beheaded or jailed there without appearing as hypocrites. Just a couple of examples here. This past year forced me to stay home and think. And I found myself very disillusioned about these and a lot of things. I found out that I am in need of that validation. For me to write, sing and play, I need to find some new reasons and inspirations. ”My Walden” so to speak. And it’s even in my book that I’m a chronic depressive. It’s dangerous for me and the people around me, if I continue. Some of the thoughts a while back were dark. Don’t worry, I’m fine. I have my two sons, a wife, the rest of the family, friends, a dog and lots of love. And I don’t think that I’ll be gone for good. Conspiracy is the word of the day. For the people who like them I need to say that my 55th birthday is now on 14th of Jan and I’ve certainly done my time for now. Blaming for instance Tuomas is an insult to both him and my free thinking. This is a very sad thing to all of us too. Have a care please. But of course now we’ll know, if some go there on purpose. There are a couple of things agreed on that I will do on 2021. Otherwise I kindly and with respect ask the media, bands, artists projects etc. to not ask me for anything within the next year. I have some reinventing to do. I hope to tell you about it on 2022. It’s not a promise though. I am so sorry about this.' Marko Hietala

Marco has retired himself. He must announce his leaving of the band, so they may continue with a new member in that place.

Yeah. Marko”s departure is a huge loss. Not just his playing but even more so his vocals. His harmonies with Floor are amazing. The new bassist is fine but he doesn’t sing. Troy takes over with the vocal harmonies now. He’s good but nothing like Marko. I’m hopeful Markos departure is just temporary.

The following is the open letter Marko posted regarding his resignation and the response from Nightwish. Other details and personal information have been kept from the public for obvious reasons. Childhood hero takes a precedence. ‍ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ‍ Marko`s resignation has left us with some difficult decisions and choices to be made. After much thought and consideration, we have, in mutual understanding, decided to perform the upcoming 'Human. :II: Nature. -world tour' as planned, but with a session bass player. The live line-up will be announced at a later date. We respect Marko`s decision and wish him all the very best. We will not comment any further." Nightwish ----‐---------------------------------- We are ALL hoping he returns, but do respect his decision and we all pray for him. Current bassist from WinterSun is filling the void on tour for the time being, but no word or hint on Marko's permanent replacement (if any). Believe me, NOBODY has heard anything from Tuomas regarding this matter. So for now everything is hearsay, wishful thinking, and a bunch of people who think they know everything. Tuomas hasn't made any announcements to date. As long as Marko isn't there, we will all miss him. 😊❤🤘🤘
