Hey guys, I've been enjoying watching you guys react to a lot of music that I know, I am very familiar with Jean-Luc Ponty but I've never heard this and I'm 52 years old, and this is some of the most beautiful melodic technically Advance music I've ever heard, so I thank you!
Such a great combination: Holdsworth and Ponty. They did 3 albums together! I can not imagine anyone saying Allan plays 'cold(ly)'. Just heard 'Enigmatic Ocean' for the first time yesterday. Do it.
The fact that this has been around for decades and people still gawk at “jazz violin”. Sigh. I teach my kids as much as I can and make them listen to as much as I can. There’s no borders when it comes to an instrument/genre relationship! Thanks so much, lovelies!
I love Jean-Luc Ponty, have for a long, long time now. First time I've ever seen anyone react to him. Maybe the two of you could do some Spyra Gyra sometime.
The first time I ever heard of Jean Luc Ponty was when he opened for Supertramp in Toronto. Because of him I rate that concert as one of my top 10 concerts of all time. Even though I was there to see Supertramp I came away with 2 new bands that I became a fan of. After Ponty had finished his set they played Pat Metheney music while Supertramp was being set up. These were bands I had never heard of. I agree with you Lex, it is probably one of the best guitar solos by Holdsworth. Jean Luc surrounded himself with such great musicians, while being a virtuoso violin player himself. Thanks for an amazing reaction.
So exquisite. Yes, he plays a 2 string harmony in those moments. It reminds me a bit of his work with Stephen Grappeli. I've had a couple of nice conversations with Jean-Luc via Facebook and he's a truly enthusiastic and kind fellow.
Just saw Jean-Luc Ponty on PBS last night, celebrating 10 years of Jazz Day concerts. Happy Jazz Day, btw!! Beautiful piece and incredible solo. Thanks, Nex. 🤪
That was a real treat. I was not aware of this recording. I first heard Alan Holdsworth with JLP in 1977 and was lucky enough to attend a concert by them in 1978. The band also included Daryl Stuermer (guitar) and Ralphe Armstrong (bass), both prodigies in there own right. Holdsworth's fluid style is so unique and playing with Stuermer's more hard edged style was a brilliant contrast. I appreciate your reactions. You seem to appreciate the same style of music that I do. Keep it up.
I saw JLP at a little church in West Palm Beach Fl about 15yrs ago. He played his ass off for 2 1/2 hrs straight. It was one of the best concerts Ive ever experienced
Another great reaction vid where I wasn't aware of this album by JLP. Not only is Alan Holdsworth on this album but so is Philip Katherine who is also a great guitarist. I saw JLP in concert with Sranley Clarke and Al Di Meola for Rite of Strings Tour at the Valley Forge Music Fair and Alan Holdsworth for Atavachron atht eChestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia. Both shows were amazing. Thanks for sharing this. This is like what I said in your live stream last night about back in the days of vinyl coming over to a friends house with some albums to listen to them together. I'll definitely be looking for this JLP album! Thanks!
Have guys listened to the Tony Williams Lifetime stuff? Allan did some tribute shows with Alan Pasqua. That material is great and Allan included Protocosmos in his shows till the end.
Huge fan of both and i've never heard this song before! Really amazing, thanks for sharing, will be playing for my fusion buddy when we get to jam/hang next time. Love the latin jazz "Price is Right" style groove Alan is soloing over, as a bassist those are some of my favs. Plus - the face Lex makes when she plays "air congas" is hilarious! Have you checked out any of Holdswoth's playing with the Tony Williams Lifetime? Proto-cosmos, Fred, Snake Oil, and Red Alert are all great and super groovy.
I agree that the solo by Allan is a lovely interlude in this song. The whole 'The Atacama Experience' album is one of JLP's best in the range of music and styles and Allan's guitar seamlessly blends in with JLP's violin. Thank you for playing.
I Love Jean Luc Ponty, saw him in Toronto and it was a fantastic concert!, Check out , "Trans- Love Express"from Enigmatic Voyage, or "The Gardens Of Babylon", from Imaginary Voyage!
Nick and Lex should definitely check Tangerine Dream out if only for a rounding of the their musical view of progressive music in the 70s. Nick may know them of course as they are of course German. I would suggest the ‘Ricochet’ album side one or ‘Tangram’ side 1 as a starting point.
Not heard this song. Just saw the album is from 2007. Pure raw jazz fusion like ”old times”. The piano player is top. You mentioned Enigmatic Ocean, that was my first Jean-Luc Ponty album 1977.
I saw Ponty in London in 76 with Daryl Stuermer just before he joined Genesis for their live shows. He certainly knew how to choose guitar players. Philip Catherine is also on the Atacama album. He is the real deal.
Electric violin...3 man Canadian prog bands...if all that appeals to you, you should check out a band called FM. I recommend the album Black Noise and it's title track. LOVE Ponty and LOVE watching you guy digging all the stuff I grew up on.
JLP... marvelous! So NOT elevator jazz... this is real jazz with some tasty sauce on it. Thank you once again from bringing the really best music out there! Not on Spotify... that’s just tragic but makes this all the more special.
Jean Luc dijo alguna vez que el unico musico que hace que su guitarra parezca violin era Allan ......sin duda las segundas voces en varias canciones de ponty las hace Allan ......mi completa admiracion por ellos dos ,
Great song; I've never heard it before. I love Holdsworth playing with a violinist. His style and phrasing go so well with the violin. Definitely check out his work on Enigmatic Ocean with JLP, and you need to get back more from UK's first album. Maybe do the entire In the Dead of Night/By the Light of Day/Presto Vivace and Reprise suite or Mental Medication or Thirty Years.
There's a great Jean Luc Ponty song with a very clever video - "Individual Choice". Worth checking out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hZm85q6zt6s.html
No ZAPPA yet? His lyrics are so off the wall, but he and his musicians are other worldly. Such music! (Chester Thompson played with them before joining Weather Report and then Genesis)
Some of my favorite Jean Luc is with Mahavishnu Orchestra on “Visions of The Emerald Beyond”! Stunning work, jamming opposite John McLaughlin! Narada Michael Walden on drums! Amazing album!
@@michaelbriefs9764 I love "Birds of Fire" but have not ventured much beyond that album. Now I shall have to listen to your recommendation. Thanks for the comment.
@@rkress9349, oh yes! “Visions” is a development on “Birds” in that there is more orchestration - Horns, strings, choral voices, etc - and when Jean Luc does his thing....OMG...I’m trying to think of a better word than incendiary. It’s volcanic, how’s that? It will change your life.
You MUST play the Enigmatic Ocean suite from JLPs album of the same name! To my ears this is the best sideman gig Allan ever did and he is sublime on all the tracks he plays on. It is also JLP’s greatest album. You played a track from the following album Cosmic Messenger which is a killer disc, but Pete Maunu and Joachim Lievano could never hope to fill Allan’s shoes, although Joachim tried to play somewhat in his style. Btw whilst there have been many imitators, none have closer to Allan than the little known Italian guitarist Nico Stufano.
My favorite JLP is Individual Choice (from the album of the same name). there's a video here on youtube that goes well with the music ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hZm85q6zt6s.html try it sometime.
Hola chicos. Saludos desde Venezuela. Por favor, hagan más reacciones de THE WARNING es la Banda de Rock del momento y me parece que la están dejando de lado. Gracias por sus honestas reacciones a grandes artistas.
