This week, we were wild camping in a forest at Loch Drunkie, Scotland. The Trossachs has plenty of spots for camping in the woods next to water, which is ideal for cooking and being discrete. But what is wild camping?

Wild Camping in a Forest | Loch Drunkie, Scotland
Another all Scottish camping trip with the exceptional GazTheExplorer. This weekend we decided on an easy wild camp after battling a munro - sorry no video - the following weekend. We ended up camping at Loch Drunkie, which is a part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, Scotland, and it's a gorgeous spot with the fall colours dominating the environment. Sadly, it was a dry event with a brief shower, so nothing to extreme this weekend. It was a great camping in the woods experience, there were people around, but everyone was on their best behaviour. But a big question posed at the end: what is your definition of wild camping?
Look after yourselves, and again, thanks for the kind messages regarding my health x

If you aren't on a campsite with facilities (toilet, shower, etc) then you are wild camping. How wild - that's open to interpretation. Are we talking wild as in remote or wild as in weather - or both? As for the book definition, it's lightweight camping where access rights apply, done in small numbers and at most for two or three nights in the one place. So, were you wild camping? The simple answer is YES.

Wild camping is the sound of nature , no car noises , gazing at the stars , listening to the water lapping on to the shore , being hypnotized by the open fire you have just made ,the rain drops on the tent sending you off to sleep , if alone just getting some clarity of thought and relaxing from everyday worries , or if with company just having a chat and a laugh with like minded people and just being yourself .

For me wild camping is anywhere accessed for free that doesn’t have facilities I.e toilets, mains power, water etc.. I really couldn’t care if it’s 10 miles or 10 metres from the car as some folk are constrained by kit budget, mobility, kids etc and I wouldn’t seek to piss on their fire or denigrate their experience. Enjoy the outdoors, leave no trace, and respect others who seek to do the same 👍🏻

"I really couldn’t care if it’s 10 miles or 10 metres from the car as some folk are constrained by kit budget, mobility, kids etc and I wouldn’t seek to piss on their fire or denigrate their experience." 110% it may not be wild camping to me, but this is wild camping to others, so I'll continue to use the tag "wild camping" to appeal to us all!.

Hiya Monty, loved the drone view😍 Loch Drunkie looks absolutely beautiful!!!! and its definitely been added to my visit in Scotty list!! See your stomach is still lined with lead lad! ha My definition of wild camping is....spending a fortune to live like a homeless person ha. ok I'll be serious...hiking miles with a weight on your back is worth all the mutterings and curses when you get to watch that breath taking sunset and then waking up to an amazing sunrise, swimming in a freezing cold lake or stream, getting soaking wet trying to pitch your tent in your rain, drinking in nature and the pure beauty of it, the peacefulness and solitude of solo wild camping cannot be described in words....you have to do it for yourself in order to understand, it's not just one thing....it's everything rolled into one. Can you wild camp in your garden?....imagination is a wonderful thing😁 and what one person classes as wild camping another may not, as long as the person who is camping enjoys it? who cares what others think. L-J xx

Hey LJ. Sorry for the late reply and hope you are well. When are you back up in Scotland? And spice is my life. I genuinely love excess spice and believe I can win all sorts of competitions involving spices lol. I agree with you. Me camping on a mountain is every bit as wild camping as someone with kids camping near the car. Equally a fantastic achievement. For me, wild camping is more trekking a bit and being off grid, but it really is all relative. Off out on the mountains this weekend so I can't wait :). Thanks for the input and never ending support x

Thanks Monty, as always a great video. On the question of wild camping, I am in my 70’s, and have health issues, but I believe in being the best you can. I did the mountain bagging and survival stuff when I was younger, but now I don’t stray too far from the car. It is about camping, not how far you have to walk before you bivvy up, I can think of at least 2 campsites that I have done Videos on that I would class as wild camps and if you are thinking of going in to the wilds would be worth a visit to check you and your gear out.
@MontyOutdoors
@MontyOutdoors 2 года назад
I believe it's all relative and I addressed my point with others. I think I have been clear when I posed the question when I asked people what is your definition. I'm going by the Outdoor Access Code's definition and my own situation. But someone with some form of restriction/obstacle in their life, say kids or one with mobility issues, without a doubt camping near the car with no facilities is wild camping.

Dinnae listen to the negative comments monty. My definition of wild camping is anywhere not on a proper campsite. Doesn't matter if its 1hr away from car I used to do that 20+ yrs ago and it was classed as wild camping. Some people have just gone too snobby on it. Hi Jane, hope you are well :) The comments didn't bother me as people had a legit point in their arguments. To me it's all relative as we need to take into account that people, for example, with mobility issues are restricted. So someone with mobility issues camping by the car is every bit as impressive as someone camping on a mountain. Thanks for watching and appreciate the feedback :)

I'm not an expert in down jackets, but this did help Gaz keep warm when we were on a munro so first impressions are fine so far. Let's see how it handles winter and we'll get a better review from it there. Do you think I should stick to doing reviews within a camping video and fully testing the anything I get? I've got a tent coming and I told them I'll use it in bad weather and if it passes the test it will be given away and recommended. But cheers again, mate. Appreciated big yin.

I think the effort required to wild camp adds to the pleasure once I'm all set up, but it varies in nature. For me the finding, planning and driving to the area is one effort, especially finding appropriate parking; I won't go too far from the car. The down side, taking too much! Or, I can leave from my door and the effort is 2 hours slogging slowly uphill :) Still new to the walking/camping and this aging bod says the downside is getting back down the next morning! Still, nothing beats wild camping. Thanks to you and all your community for opening this up for folk like me. Ta.

Wild camping to me is going somewhere where there is no electricity, bathroom facilities or any other conveniences. You either bring food & all that entails or hunt/fish/forage. I don't think it matters what people want to call wild camping. What does annoy me though is when you have people who may not be able to walk far or they have to stay close to a car for what ever reason and someone belittles them saying its not real wild camping. Glad you enjoyed it, Lainey :). Beastie season is over... are you coming out yet? I think it all depends on the issue. I didn't want to state it on the video incase I never got my words out properly, but there are people out there with mobility issues for example and they are unable to trek into out "wilderness" so camping next to the car is every bit of an incredible feat as someone camping on top of a munro in my opinion.

You are so lucky up there to be able to pop off into the forest, near a loch too whenever the mood takes you. I don't think there's any chance of doing this here in Norfolk. I'll try and find out. Also what's camping to me will be wild camping to people who have some form of limitation/restraint happening in their life! This is definitely wild camping to many people. And thank you for the kind words and support, Janice. They mean a lot and I'm really happy that you enjoy these videos. Thank you so much :)

Great watch again mate, i might be wrong but are you not suppose to seam seal the insides of the seams rather than the outsides ? I sealed an old vango from the inside and it worked a treat although it still did dry in like pva glue but you obviously cant see the inside when the tent is pitched.
@MontyOutdoors
@MontyOutdoors 2 года назад
When you mean inside, do you mean inside the tent or inside the flaps? You seam seal the inside of the flaps, but not the inside of the tent. 3F show you how it's done on their RU-vid.

Hi Gordon, hope you are well mate. We drove to Loch Drunkie, but I think the Three Lochs Drive shuts at the end of this month then reopens around Easter. There is a walking trail from Aberfoyle and I believe it takes around 90 minutes to 2 hours. Come winter, I hope to take this trail. You'll be able to find it online and on Google Maps. Between October and end of February, no permit is required :)

Let me ask you this: I live on 10 acres & 5 of it is woods with hills & a ravine. If i camped there, would you consider it wild camping? I would definitely do the same there as i would anywhere else except I'd have to take food with me as our ravine has no fish big enough to eat.
@MontyOutdoors
@MontyOutdoors 2 года назад
It's all relative. I hope my other point addressed this question. For example, this is wild camping to someone with mobility issues, but for me it wouldn't be. That and I have no idea what 10 acres is lol.

I don't think distance from car or road really defines wild-camping. If you are not on a campsite, and carry all the kit to escape your usual world to enjoy the outdoors then it counts.
@MontyOutdoors
@MontyOutdoors 2 года назад
I believe the definition following the outdoor access code is an hours walk from the car, in small numbers, using small tents. Really to me, it's look after yourself in a tent that has no facilities as you say.

I've got that Elixir 1. 1 tent of many. It's superb. Had it in sustained winds of 30 mph in Southern uplands. Surprisingly robust. Wild camping? Been camping for 35 years. Its just "Camping" to me. I don't feel the need to define wild. Have tent - will camp. It's just semantics. The guys that said that you were not wild camping due to the proximity of your car probably view wild camping as camping on top of Nevis or similar. Then some Alaskan guy or Kamchatkan will just come along and laugh at them in turn as it won't be 'wild' to them...let's face it, you can still see Fort William from the summit It just becomes a pissing contest about who is more 'Reinhold Messner/Ranulph Fiennes'. Ignore the naysayers Monty......just keep doing what you are doing.
@MontyOutdoors

There you go everyone. GazTheExplorer and Mountain Del approved! Cheers for sharing the knowledge, now I can spread it :). And appreciate the input, mate. I think it's all relative and we need to take into account those with mobility issues who are restricted on what they can do. This is certainly wild camping to many and not to others. I'm appealing to everyone hopefully!

Monty, we had trail closures near the Folk Art Center,milepost 382,on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Asheville, North Carolina, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 8, due to a bear attack on visitors to the park. Here, you can't camp with food in your tent. Wild campers hang their food from trees in bear bags, and some try to cook/eat a distance from where they sleep. I've seen many bears, and woken to find scat 30 ft. from my tent. I've personally seen a large mountain lion near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, though "experts" say we don't have them there. Also, I once had a huge feral hog come out of high grass and rush me and my border collie, but we got inside in time. I had to run up to within 10 ft. of a large bobcat in my backyard, to scoop up my crazy Westie. She'd worried it onto my woodpile. Last night I heard a pack of coyotes howling in my neighbor's cowfield. Lol This is a different kind of wild. You have to watch out for rattlesnakes, cottonmouth, and copperhead.
