From what I’ve read, hydrated lime increases pH and reduces moisture which in turn creates an environment less hospitable for mastitis causing bacteria. Hope it works for your herd, Jan.

The Wildlife Game Dept. dropped off a semi trailer load of 10ft treated 6"x 6" fence posts and 6ft high deer fencing at our alfalfa farm back in 1977. We didn't even know they were delivering it to all off us farms in our area. We sectioned off 5 acres of land to see if it was feasible to install the rest. The deer jumped it with ease. All it was good for was keeping our dogs from chasing the deer out of that section. And the venison was a nice change from our beef now and then.

Well, here in Texas, we have been known to use subsonic 300 blackout. Using a suppressed AR, with a little luck you can get a few before they figure it out. We mostly use them against feral hogs which are a much bigger problem than Bambi and her sisters around here. Texans do a pretty good job keeping the deer herds down but it’s hard to stay ahead of the reproductive rate of hogs. They are almost as fast as rats. In addition, I guess you can’t thin the herd due to laws. Down here a farmer can protect his crops. My stepbrother got his nicest deer ever from his kitchen window. It looks out over a soybean field. My sister-in-law was none too happy about it though.
