Fully believe the “wife guy” role started to become oppressive to Ned and he felt like since he’d made it his whole identity, he couldn’t “escape” a situation that no longer made him happy, so he started to cheat instead out of temptation but more so resentment against his wife and colleagues. That’s why he made it so obvious, he kind of subconsciously wanted to get revenge on the people around him. He didn’t realize that he was guaranteed to get caught and it would only backfire on him and destroy his life, because he’s completely un-self-aware. He was the wife guy but if he had simply divorced his wife he could have saved his life from the utter destruction it’s in now.
