In this video I will do my first boil test on the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove that Dave Canterbury, from WildernessOutfitters, sent me to play with. I already did a burn test and in that test I got a really fast start-up time. So this will make the second burn I've done with this stove.
One thing I'm a little concerned with is the height of the included pot stand. In the past I've found that the mini Trangia (or just Trangia for some picayune people out there) needed around a one inch distance between the top of the burner to the bottom of the pot. The burner-to-pot distance is about 1 3/8" on the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove and it's pot stand, and it has a tighter flame than on the Mini Trangia (again Trangia for the picayune people). I was surprised on the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove's start-up time so I have hope.
I'll also answer comments I got from Paulie Walnuts and oldgeekster1.
Paulie Walnuts commented, " Hiram, How is the seal on the Pathfinder lid? One thing I like about my Trangia is the non sealed extinguisher cap. I would worry that without this on the Pathfinder, it would damage the seal."
oldgeekster1 commented, " Hiram, received mine a couple-three days after seeing your initial video - there were a few strings of unknown material sticking out of the holes. There is a liner of some sort in there. The strings burned off on initial lighting. Today I'll do my sixth burn. Mine seems to get a little faster bloom each time I light it. Had it blow out once from the wind with the "stove" off - never with the "stove" on. After a lengthy burn - the base gets very hot, just takes longer than my trangias."
Thank you, Paulie Walnuts and oldgeekster1, for your comments,
and thank you all for watching my videos,
Hiram

Thanks for being the guinea pig on this. I've seen enough...gonna go ahead and order one. The fuel capacity is awesome. The way I cook and the average length of my trips, I won't ever have to carry any extra.

Hiram thanks for all your work man. I just got my Pathfinder today. Fit and finish are top notch. I did have to bend the pot stand a bit to get a better grip around the canister when storing but nothing big deal. Filled about 3/4 with denatured alcohol it took about 1.5 minutes to bloom. However it was during the day on my lunch break so the jets could have bloomed earlier but I didn't notice due to the lighting. Excited to try it this evening boiling some water.

The first time I used my Pathfinder alcohol stove, I made the mistake of using 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. It burned with a yellow flame, wouldn't bloom, and blackened the pot and the stand with massive amounts of soot. I then read on YT that the proper fuel is Denatured Alcohol, available at any hardware store. That made a huge difference. Now I get a quick bloom, an almost pure blue flame, and no soot. Lesson learned. It would have been nice if the stove had come with a small piece of paper saying that.

I know this an old video, but this stove is sold now with a fuel regulation cap that looks like when shut could put out the fire. I bought one because it was being discontinued and was over 50% off. Their new stove is shorter and contains less fuel. They are selling a two piece stainless steel gizmo that makes a pot platform that puts the flame much closer to the pot.

After watching this and other videos, we ordered this Alcohol Stove and was very happy when it was delivered a day early. When we unboxed it, all was exactly as it was supposed to be. We put some Denatured Alcohol in the stove and lite it and it finally started to bloom. But, it only bloomed on 1/2 of the top. So after 40 minutes it ran out of alcohol, so that tells you that it had enough alcohol to burn for a while, it was about 3/4th full. So the second day, we decided to try it again, so hubby brought it in the house, he filled it up full, and lit it like we are supposed to, and it didn't bloom all the way around, again. We watched it and it never ever bloomed like it is supposed to. So, I emailed Self Reliance Outdoor School and will wait like we should as it was after 4pm and Customer Service are out of the office until Monday, which since it a holiday, so I am hoping but without much that this will soon be resolved. Thanks for the great videos, we do watch and learn from them, keep 'em coming so others can see and learn too. EDIT: We contacted SRO, they sent us a new stove, it works like it is supposed to. Glad to do business with a company that will stand behind their products, no matter where it is made. Great Customer Service, Fast Shipping and when we need more stuff, we will be looking at your site. Thanks to Dave Canterbury, for selling these stoves and for standing behind them too.

As always, well done. Re: Lid. Gasket inside reminds me of lids on 'pop top' glass food jars. Grocery store jars of salsa & dip, for example. Those withstand the heat of pressure canning (estimate 245 F). Same lids can often be warmed (heating pad) & jars re-used with vacuum seal dry canning. Don't know the upper limits of their heat resistance in relationship to their ability to do the job intended. Can you check the temperature of the top of the burner immediately after the flame is extinguished? That could yield a ballpark figure for those who know a whole lot more than I do about gasket materials & heat resistance. Like your compact DIY snuffer idea. Easy to store on burner with a rubber (ranger) band between uses. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks a bunch. Been wondering about this stove, but have been holding off until it gets your esteemed stamp of approval! A few questions...Will the Tiranga smother/damper ring fit on this stove? Are the cap diameters the same as a trangia, I.e. are the caps interchangeable? Does your improvised smothering lid fit over top of this stove's normal cap? Lastly, will this stove fit inside the firebox Nano folding stove, and if so how well does the burn height work on that one? Thanks again, John

Hiram, on the subject of snuffing out the Pathfinder Alcohol Stove - I'll be using an old Esbit simmer/snuffer ring that came with one of the 7 piece stove kits, the kind with the little folding wire handle on it. Playing around I just discovered that wire handle will just fit in the open slot on the pot stand, permitting you to snuff out the fire with the stand in place. I don't imagine I'm going to run into one of those "dissimilar metals" things, do you?

I used the 1/2" square cage wire to make and use for the 1" sweet spot, but if you take one row of the holes away, (from the pathfinder pot stand) you will be on the 1" sweet spot. just my opinion when I tested the stove.

Hi Hiram, thanks for the great review, very thorough. I got on and accidently spilled some water inside of the stove. Dried it out for 24 hrs. Poured some 91% rubbing alcohol and she wouldn't light??? I also noticed some white thread like material poking out of the jet holes.
@wvbonbonqueen
@wvbonbonqueen 4 года назад
snakemonkey555 have you returned your stove because of this problem, the material poking out of the holes? We just bought one and it only blooms on one side, the other side nothing. We are in the process of contacting Dave Canterbury about this and hoping they will exchange it for a new one. It happened on the 1st burn, thought it was a fluke, but the second burn was the same. Please, let me know if you returned it, or not. thank you.

nice vid Hiram. I'm not sure what that gasket is made from but if its rubber in the 260 deg c will be the melting point. If its silicon it will be over 1100 deg c. Better to be safe then sorry I guess.

I wanted to see boil times with this vs the mini Trangia, so I went back through your vids. You got approximate boil times of equal amounts of water and conditions (very nice you using a standardized set of testing parameters) of 5 minutes with the mini Trangia, 7 minutes with the military Trangia (both of these in the triangle stove box), and 10 minutes with the Pathfinder. I didn't hear mention as to the final amounts of methanol used to reach boil by all three or I could calculate the ratio of fuel to water it took to boil the water. This is relevant IMO. If I was looking at these three as possible stoves for a long distance thru-hike on a major trail like the Appalachain, Pacific, or Continental, etc, I would want to take this into account. It could be that when it comes to the weight of carrying an additional container of fuel vs the additional fuel it would consume to take the Pathfinder, the additional container would pay off. If the weight difference was even remotely close but I would be able to stretch the fuel capability significantly with the mini Trangia due to the faster and more efficient boiling times, the choice would seem pretty simple, take the mini Tangia in the triangle box and a nice flask of fuel.

6:05 The more alcohol in a stove, the longer it will take to bloom. All the alcohol must be heated at once, so if there is 5 oz in the stove, it will take 3 times as long to bloom as if there is only 1.5 oz in the stove.
@KE4VVF
@KE4VVF 9 лет назад
It's a respectable time, about as good as a tea light stove. The boil time will probably get a little bit better when you get the sweet spot determined.

I am really ignorant as to how these alcohol stoves work, so can someone explain it to me? I made an alcohol stove out of a tuna can and a wad of that fibreglas pink insulation. It works alright I suppose. What is the purpose of the jets on this stove? I assume it is burning alcohol vapours? If so, why do there need to be jets, cant that big hole in the centre emit enough vapours to run the stove?
@Seamus3051
@Seamus3051 5 лет назад
I suspect that the purpose of the jet dispersal is to enlarge the thermal foot print on the bottom of the cooking vessel, thereby reducing the time required for the liquid content to reach a boil ??

the problem with this stove is that the maker / seller DID NOT make the pot stand slot gap wide enough to accommodate the width of the simmer ring handle to fit through it. the stove comes with the pot stand and comes with the simmer ring, but the pot stand slot gap won't allow the simmer ring handle to fit through the pot stand slot gap. how stupid and how disappointing to me as a buyer. you go all that far and then the buyer gets the stove just to find out idiots made and sold it to you.... in that the parts don't work together or fit together as they should. this is a real good example of a major company / outdoor gear supplier selling something that they had to know before selling doesn't work as it should. as a buyer I'm very disappointed in this product for this one reason. I paid $35 + shipping for this stove. if I had known this in advance I wouldn't have bought this item. martina
