Hi, this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens we’re going to photograph wildlife with our MIOPS laser trigger. Wild, ferocious animals! Ok, fine. Hummingbirds. I'm really happy with the shots I got using the trigger and Tamron 90mm macro. Take a look and see how I did it. And for a more in depth look at the lesson check it out on the website: bit.ly/1oDuisJ
Keep those cameras rollin' and keep on clickin'.

Jay P. Thank you for making Photography Lessons Fun. Some may critique the final image while missing the excellent tutorial surrounding it. The "How To" might be implied in the title but your ability to create a challenge for yourself and your gear, then turn it into a complete, yet fun lesson, is very much appreciated. I especially like that you blend the technical aspects and the artistry together and at a level a beginner or a fellow professional could appreciate. Lighting and staging and sound, Oh My! Keep up the great work! Cheers! -PhotographybyBlee

Excellent video. I appreciate it as someone with no photography skill. I also appreciate it as a proficient content creator. I am *amazed* how you have such a poor like:dislike ratio with such great content and production quality. Anyway, 4 years later, I wanted to say that this vid is top notch.

Cool video. However, the cost of the equipment used will make this technique expensive for most to implement and use at home. If one watches the birds at the feeder for a while, one realizes that it is fairly easy to predict when the bird will return to the feeder. So one can get rid of the trap. Then, by placing the feeder correctly and using simple reflectors to get light on the subject, one can then focus on getting the shot. i used a telephoto lens rather than a macro lens (which cost about the same about). Put my camera on a tripod and was able to get some distance between the camera and the bird. As for the background-- that will depend on the backyard, but i used both natural and a large backdrop. I was able to used a shutter speed around 1/1000 at ISOs from 100 to 250. i got extremely clean images. This year I'm going to try using triggered flashes to illuminate the bird.

Would a strobe do a better job of capturing the wing beat?
@jonathanbyrdmusic
@jonathanbyrdmusic 3 года назад
The strobe scares the birds. I tried it and they would let me take about three shots before they stayed away for the rest of the day.

Nice birds and nice job. Question on your LED panel. Was it being used in a flash mode or continuous source? Have any issues with window reflections?
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 8 лет назад
+John D Its a continuous light sourced and does not have a flash mode. I did have a reflection of the light in the window if I got it to close to the camera. As long as I had it off to the side it was fine. Great question.

Where do you get the clamp that you are using to mount and hold the laser?
@anil1svnit

In Magic Lantern there is settings to allow camera to trigger based on motion sense. So people with just SLR and know how to add that OS can do this with just a tripod and Flash. I will try it.. Sadly we don't have any humming birds near where I live..

Now I feel better, I've got a Nikon D3200 with a 70-300 mm manual focus lens and I got two or three photos of humming birds that aren't as good as yours but are close, LOL. Hope I can work my way up to start matching your gear.

Hello JP, I tried the same setup, though my miops doesnt seem to react like yours. It doesn’t trigger when I break the beam to far from the triggersensor. It does however trigger when I block the sensor even without the laser turned on? You have any thoughts on this? I sent you an email aswell. Kind regards, Frann

Th pluto trigger shits down the laser at the moment of the shot. So the laser is not visible in the picture.

JP, why did you not choose faster than 500th to try and freeze the wings more. i know those little buggers are fast so i thought the fastest shutter would be better. Also why not shoot from inside to try eliminate the laser and led reflections on the glass? loved the video, great content and ideas, i see you keep your cameras clicking lol
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 8 лет назад
+Dms Sutdios64 I choose 500th because I was shooting with ambient light and that was as fast as I could be a 1250 ISO. I did not want to shoot wide open. It was hard as it was to get the bird in focus. I was shooting from inside. It was just easier than setting op outside. Thanks for your support!!

@photozen8398

You will have better result using flash instead of LED, you will freeze the wings at the expense of. crushing ambient by raising shutter speed. here your bird looks wingless.

i think i'll just stick to shooting pentax and avoid the cost of a laser trap, the need to move the laser every time i adjust my shot and having to clone out nasty red blobs in all my photos.

Great. Just got a Miops myself. Excellent. This has probably been said before , but isn't there a chance of blinding an animal with the laser ?? Your thoughts ? : )
@RonWSmith
@RonWSmith 7 лет назад
Same here. I just got the MIOPS Smart trigger and hoping to capture the hummingbirds. My wife asked about the concern of blinding the little birds with the laser. Hello duh. Seems like it would be a concern. Is there a different setup that doesn't require the laser to trigger?
@coreyperez13
@coreyperez13 7 лет назад
I was hoping you could adjust the sensitivity and just use a regular light. I don't own one yet, but its absolutely ridiculous to be using a laser pointer for this purpose. They were designed for one sole purpose, not shining around people without a solid background to absorb the light.
@TheBLCbob
@TheBLCbob 5 лет назад
Agreed. Why risk harming wildlife for the sake of a photograph. I’ve built a laser trap using the microcontroller from an Arduino and a load of electronic components. It takes time and patience to construct and programme but it’s dirt cheap. It can be connected to a speed light, camera shutter and, via a relay, to a table lamp. Built for ‘drop shots’ and fast motion detection and capture but I’d never use a laser device on animals.

Checked with the manufacturer (Pluto) as I'm doing dog powder (jumping) shoots and using the trigger to fire the camera/flashes when the laser beam is broken. They said it is a Class 1 laser, so is harmless.

As always, excellent show Jaymeister. Your shows are always tops from the standpoint of production value and dynamically addressing everyday problems as well as the solutions and workarounds. Realizing Jay is a commercial photographer, we should realize this show isn't meant to show best-in-class bird shooting practices. I have never had a chance to photograph a hummingbird but I do some bird photography and with these small creatures shutterspeeds like 1/2000th are sometimes not enough... I wonder ifit would be at all possible to 'freeze' a hummingbird. Anyway 1/100 sounds weirdly slow to me.

No doubt...cool "product revue", but what about the rest of us "COVID Slaves" who have broken out the old Canon 400D and Sunpak 'Potatoe Mashers' on 'fixed income'? Your 'presentation ' was FLAWLESS for me, but at 80 years on this earth, fortunately, I could pull YOU back to 75% speed. As a "veteran" on 3-strikes (photog since 1949), product photog (too long), a videographer on commercials/voiceovers for Time Warner Cable, (weddings, portraits, large format...blah, blah, blah...there are those of us with that wanna take a shot at our latent talents if we are being QUARANTINED! @@TheSlantedLens Good Sunday to you! Your reply goes good with my morning coffee! I hope you were not offended by my comment, because I do glory at your spunk and energy. Truly a 'believer' in the magic of the lens. I finally achieved a lifetime desire to get at least ONE decent shot of my favorite little hummingbird, so I sat in a chair in my backyard for hours in the not too friendly Kansas sun, hooked up my Pixel remote to my 500D, and burned nearly 1,000 frames with (in my wife's opinion) about 25% success. Now the editing...argggh! Thanks for sharing your ENERGY and knowledge! Sincerely, Doc

@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 8 лет назад
+SuperLitherland My main reason for a feeder was to make the coming and going of the Humming bird predictable. Flowers would have been to unpredictable. There may never of been a bird that would have come to drink at that particulate flower. Also my goal was to catch the birds in flight and as they would take a drink they would fly up and hover just away form the feeder. That was where I shot most of my shots. Thanks
