I've always interpreted Wilfied as the human, down-to-earth version of the Doctor. An old man, a veteran of the greatest war to ravage his world, seeking solace among the stars... A man still seeking to do the right thing. Wilfried would have deserved more screen time, that's for sure.
@MerelyAFan
@MerelyAFan 2 года назад
I think the Doctor really did look at Wilf's life with a lot of admiration. The former's an all powerful time lord, but for all his cleverness and accomplishments, it's the latter that's emerged in his old age with a clean conscience and a loving relationship with his granddaughter, two things the Doctor no doubt wishes he could have again.

@alexanderrahl7034
@alexanderrahl7034 Год назад
@@theirishviking9278 he isn't shaming them. Listen to his voice, he's hurt by the implication because some part of him doubts himself. He's not saying that to her, he's reassuring himself. Judging by his age, he was likely in WW2. When all the soldiers came home and were heralded as heroes for defeating the nazis, he probably was surrounded by men who had stories to tell of how they killed the nazis in the war. Deep down inside him, he feels some form of shame that he didn't do the same, "his duty". And that small shame inside him has been fighting with his morals and principles his entire life, weighing on his conscience. Pride that he stuck true to his morals through the war, and guilt/shame that he may not have done or given enough. We saw this in his character, he salutes the doctor, he acts like he's back in the army when the Master returns. He wants to redeem himself, to himself. Some part of him is ashamed, and he wants to make amends. But the tragedy is, that he has nothing to be ashamed of.
@melodieholton5611
@melodieholton5611 Год назад
@@alexanderrahl7034 Just touching on a point you said (100% well explained, by the way!): Wilfred was most *definitely* a WW2 vet. There was a clear reference in 'Turn Left' when they were "relocating" the non-English families to "labour camps." Wilfred breaks down, saying "Labour camps; that's what they called them last time." The full realization of what he means by that, is why Donna becomes hysterical, takes chase, and demands to know where the authorities are taking them. Because she knows what Wilfred means by "the last time" - probably with full knowledge that her grandad served and the painful stories of when the truths came out. It is also the reason that Wilfred and Rocco exchange , quiet, pained looks while saying goodbye and salute one other (as seen in this video) - because they both know what was about to happen. Apart from Rocco saying "My Captain" with his salute, and saying nothing else. Most likely, because they did not wish to alarm the young children. They both knew what "labour camp" meant, and they keep it among themselves, until Wilfred's words are heard by Donna. Of course, Rocco would have been too young to have been near the times of WW2 himself, but he quite possibly had family who were effected or devastated by it. Perhaps his own parents, or other relatives, and he must have known that Wilfred was a veteran himself; hence the salute and the calling him of "Captain" - which quite possibly could have been Wilfred's former rank.

I feel like Wilfred was a character that kept on growing. In the beginning he was just a random man, but over time he became to represent the best in humanity, I feel like that is why the Doctor said he would be honored if Wilfred was his father, because after all the pain and darkness Wilfred went through he still became a beacon of light that the Doctor would turn to. For all the Doctor's knowledge and for all the things he went through, the Doctor looked to Wilfred as someone who he wished he could become. Not because Wilfred was a insanely smart scientist, or that Wilfred was an invincible warrior, but because he truly cared, and that no matter what life threw at him he was able to get back on his feet and help people out, that he stuck to his ideals, no matter how hopeless the situation. In the end Wilfred is someone who is at the end of his journey, someone who has gone through life and is better for it. I feel like that is what the Doctor wants, he wants to be better for living his life. Wilfred is the type of the man I want to be in the future. He did not seek to be a hero, just to be a good man. To me, that is what makes him a hero.

Wilfred Mott, the old soldier. Able to serve but missed out on the worst of war, yet is unashamed by it. SO much like the Doctor should be, yet won't allow himself because of the horrors he has seen and yes, even committed in the cause of saving the galaxy, even though he had to destroy both the enemy, and his own people. This is a very real thing called survivor's guilt. Yet Wilfred helps Ten understand, at the end. Both have their own regrets, their own scars. Wilfred, the man who is not remotely important, yet means everything at the end. At this point in your life, Doctor, who else could it be who understands you so much?

He wasn't meant to get too much attention. He let's you know he's always there, so you can take peace in it - just like a soldier, right?

omg 5:01 is an amazing little detail. Wilf stands to attention but doesn't salute, any other military figure salutes him but wilf understands that he wouldn't want that and doesn't do that bit. RIP Bernard Cribins even just that short "I don't want you to die" made me tear up, that's how good you were as an actor.

The scene of him crying at the end, (since been made into a meme) is one of the most moving pieces of acting ive seen, up there with Bryan Cranston and the Jane death scene in breaking bad. These emotions arent faked they are dredged up from the pain and suffering that we all incur throughout our lives. It perfectly captures the moment of saying good bye to a loved one, a father, a son, a daughter, a mother. When he reaches out to thin air its hard not to shed a tear. We lose it all in the end, we all suffer the same, i hope anyone reading this that is questioning their existence just hangs in there and gives themselves some time. We all deserve peace eventually.

Wilfred and Donna... Two of the best characters outside of the Doctor himself.
