Harbor Freight launched a new line of mechanic tools geared to professional mechanics. The Icon series tools are trying to compete head to head with Snap on Tools, Matco Tools and other tool truck brands. Will a almost $9000 tool box from Harbor Freight be worth the money? Can Harbor Freight go head to head with Snap On Master Series boxes? All great questions! Let's find out. Harbor Freight provided the tool box used in this video.

That ratio doesn’t work for me because I work on airplanes, which don’t really require expensive tools, but I’m also constantly wheeling the box around the hangar. I work in a warehouse that stores and ships Snap-On tool boxes. They are only built in one town in the world. And not just handling them, and having friends that work there building them, and owning one myself, I can confirm that they are by far not worth what they sell for. I do sheet metal and woodworking, and I built a beast of a toolbox that, if it were to be judged by the standards of Snap-on, or in this case, Icon, it'd very likely cost $20,000-$30,000. That being said, it was built using less than $1000 worth of sheet stainless steel, galvanized steel and oak, fasteners and other materials. Has more storage, more features, and more usable work space. It has built-in LED lighting in every drawer and cabinet, and above the work-surface that comes on when accessed, steel peg board backing, replaceable HDPE (cutting board material) work-top and drawer inserts, lockable caster wheels, oak laminate drawer and cabinet faces, gas strut assisted hutch, among many, many other features. It also has a bottle opener and a coat hook on the side as a bonus. Just saying.. these companies charge a pretty penny for these boxes, and I understand it's to recoup on the tooling and the overhead. But hell, I've got very little overhead, so I can afford to make my boxes out of better materials for a small fraction of the cost.

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ru-vid.comUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

i am retired from heavy and medium diesel and heavy equipment mechanics, and here is my thoughts on the topic snap on going back 40 years ago, their "taco wagon" which was the top of the line box at the time, was beautiful and had all the cool stuff like ball brg slides, but they scimped out on using light gauge steel. i recall vividly on a slow day the guys would break out a frisbee and go a few rounds across the shop up until the day a frisbee hit the side of a snapon box and dented the hell out of it! that was a huge eye opener for a lot of us guys at the time, and snap on was looked at far more closely from then on. skip forward about 25 years and the HF side box gen1, i had one fully loaded with tools jump out of the back of a service truck and fall down a switchback onto the pavement about 20ft below, tools everywhere, the box looked like it had exploded.... my goal was to pick up the tools and just kick the carcas of the box over in the ditch for a scrapper to come along and pickup, every drawer slide was pulled apart, but the drawers looked ok, and the main case was ok, so i began to reassemble the box, set it back in the truck and load it all back up with the tools,,, everything went together, every drawer worked as new, and the box was still square and plumb, save for one crunched corner... i still have that box and it work just fine. i think the devil is in the details, take a look at the empty weight of the icon box compared to the snap on box, there is a huge difference with the icon box being a couple hundred pounds heavier... that weight comes from added steel, either more plate, or heavier gauge, either way it makes for a tougher box. if i had it to do again, i would seriously look at the harbor freight icon boxes, and with the 36 month zero interest plan coming soon, and 20% discount??? yes the tool truck guys have something to be concerned with. they won't lose all their sales of course, but they will lose a percentage, and in business most can't afford to lose "any" sales, so even a 10% market share will cripple many companies and their dealers. 10% market share for harbor freight in the tool truck market is significant, and they can only go up from there. to think otherwise is to have ones head in the sand.

mobilebob gayle coupons can’t be used for icon. 2 things concern me. 1 the S.O is made in USA and icon in China. I do prefer to to keep workers in the us. Working. In reality, the actual price for this same set up from S.O. Is $13000-$14000. other thing to consider Is resale value. S.O. Boxes are easy to resell and hold a value even after 20 years. H.f boxes don’t fetch much money used. Last item, truck boxes come assembled. I’ve seen the icon boxes and H.F. Has stepped up their game but the store display that was just put on floor that day was already damaged and there was a gouge in paint. It’s good but not quite there. A bit off subject, H.F. Service cart for $220 is a great for the money. It’s basically the same as blue point cart that sells for about $500 on truck. Blue point is owned by snap on but not made by snap on. Blue point are rebranded tools made by other companies.

I was looking at HB's Icon box set up and noticed right away the gauge of steel that was used. The variable detent adjustment to their drawers is awesome..one day right. Thanks again for your insight, love to hear from wise mechanics on their experiences and opinions.

@waynesmith3526 4 года назад
First of all, I'm going to say I definitely think you could have edited and shortened this from 25 min to maybe 15 min tops. As far as the box goes, I think HF will be lowering their price, or doing the typical high price with a coupon. I think the price point is on the high spectrum considering the other competition out there, and you mentioned one... The other thing being, as you mentioned, no one pays full retail for snap on, which is what HFT is comparing this to. I will say I think HFT did their research and the options they have on the box are pretty cool. But, myself being in the market to sell my Snap On box, and upgraded to something larger, I wouldn't consider the HF box at the price they are.

I've had both Snap-On ant Matco boxes. For many years. Some of you old salts may remember, my old Matco boxes had Chicago Pneumatic plates on the back! My present set is a Matco one. Heavy stuff. It's the "titanium" color. Thought silver would be cool. Matco called me and asked if a few days delay would be OK. Sure, no worries. My box was the one featured in their catalog. They used it for a photo session. Thought that was cool indeed.

Great video. This is coming up right when I need to upgrade again so I've been looking at all the options. That's a very nice box but I'm with the general consensus that it's a little steep for harbor freight. I'm leaning towards an extreme or a used truck brand for half the price. Also my matco has that style drawer adjustment and after 3 years some of them work perfectly but others roll open with the drawer above or below.

I just watched a 56"x30" KRL box sell at an auction for $1350. It wouldn't have gone that cheap if I had more 'fun money' to play with. The box was designed and built for the technician (small engine/motorcycle shop) and had a build date of 1998. I tested every drawer, they all worked and were the original slides. It did have missing paint from chemicals and the occasional wrench slip, but all in all was holding up fabulously. I'm curious to see how these hold up over time. For me personally, I could never spend over $300 at a HFT store in one visit, no matter what name they fasten to it. Plus Menards still has the 72" pro boxes with stainless steel top for $1600 and run an 11% rebate sale almost every month. Glad to see an honest first impressions video on this box. Thanks, Charles.

Re the chipping, corners are a pain to protect; could sand it down and paint it with some heavy duty paint like raptor bed paint or take a cheap option and put a wrap on it ? On the whole a decent box, be tempted to swap the shallow draws out for the heavy duty ones with the supports :)

That sounds about right. The toolbox is a weird thing. When you break it down to the simplest thing, it does just hold tools. However proper organization and work flow will help you be more efficient. There is also a joy of working factor that plays a small part.
@towtruckaj

@@HumbleMechanic The box has nothing to do with the organization you can organize in a million different ways, a toolbox is just a big box with a bunch of slide-out smaller boxes, there is no better organization from box to box with the exception of maybe a top work area or maybe Milwaukee power tool drawer organizer, but even those can be added to other boxes, there is no situation where I can't organize like another guy because he has a different box than me, it's just boxes and in the end no guy buys a toolbox and adds nothing, they buy a toolbox and buy organizers and foam inserts and pegboard organizers, etc.

That's very true I've come across certified mech who tell the most likely answer to a problem but couldn't do the work. Had to redo most everything the touched. Then old timers that were just amazing. Having a good selection of tools to give you options to problems is very important. Storage for your investment is a must. Worked in shops that didn't have normal shop equipment. Tap dies thread chasers class 8 lug nut removers (budd wheels) test equipment etc. So I invested in my work, could never understand people in the trades mechanic carpenter etc who not invest in themselves. A ratchet isn't a hammer, a hammer isn't a gear puller lol you get the idea. Invest in yourself. Too much money not to protect buy a bigger box that you can afford it won't take long to out grow it. Just food for thought. Been turning wrench's since I was about 8 now 62 dad and uncles made me scrub parts and sit in the engine compartment ( 1960 70s) to save there backs semi trucks air force cargo planes I've been around. Just my opinion but it sucks when you're shit started coming up missing. Doc

@@danhigbee2283 66yrs myself. You couldn't have explained it any better. I'm retired now, but I had different rollaways for each area of the shop. Every tool for wiring, plumbing, assembly, welding, coatings, ect, all had their own rollaways and chests. Every tool has it's place. When you're done using it, put it back where it belongs. The next time you need it, you know where it's at, and won't waste time looking for it. I've used many of the same tools for over 50 years. Some even passed down to me from my grandfather and my father. My son started his own business a couple of years ago. Now many of those tools and equipment that put diapers on his bottom as a baby, are now putting money in his pocket. Stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Nice review thanks. I do like the main cabinet. The in cabinet for your power tools is a great idea. Keeps them away stowed away from the sticky finger people. I have my own garage shop as I am retired. I do not like the neighbor kids or when people go on walks and I ball all your stuff. Keeping things hidden is a deterrent to theft. I knew a contractors wife and she kept telling him to keep the garage door closed so people couldn't see the garage contents. He didn't do that. When they got back from a summer vacation everything was gone. They did live in a nice subdivision. Currently I am adding one of Harbor Freights 8 Camera Systems. I have to say I am very impressed. Catalog all your tools and make sure you and your Insurance agent are on the same page. Thanks for this review.

There pro series ratchets and sockets have done me good for years and every one says that there wrenches are junk I've had my set for 3 years and still haven't broken one or had the end spread yet I've only broken one 1/2" comfort grip flex head rachet but in that ratchets defense it had a 8 foot peice of pipe on the end trying to remove the bolt in the accessory drive pulley on a 855 cummins and after work I stopped by and got a new ratchet no questions asked.
