Will 2.0L Turbos Rule the World? 2018 Audi Q7 vs Acura MDX vs VW Atlas Drag Race 

Mdx started late on the drag race with the audi.

Love my Acura! I've been driving Acura for years and I stayed very loyal to the brand. Most wont agree with me, sales are showing. But Acura is a great, reliable brand. If you want a luxury vehicle with a fair price you can't go wrong! I had 2008 mdx, 2014 mdx and now looking for 2017 model, hoping to find the red with black rims!

I prefer the Acura I love to rev a Honda v6 to redline.

The ability to put decent horsepower out of a 2.0 has been around for decades, the issue is you you have a 2.0 L4 with 300hp in one hand, and a 3.6 V6 with 300 HP in the other hand, the 2.0 is working twice as hard to achieve the same HP as the V6, negating most MPG gains, and guess which one will last longer?, the one thats not stressing to keep up, the V6. Automakers are now doing what computer makers have done for decades, Planned Obsolescence, you now have to buy cars more often because that tiny motor thats been stressing to keep up is broke. I've been in the car business for 25 years and have seen cars and trucks optioned with the larger motor live longer, FACT

ACURA MDX is the best, especially model 2008/2009. with 300 HP. No any BMW, AUDI or other SUV can be compared with Acura, of course in the same class of CC.... I am owner of ACURA MDX and I can say ONLY HONDA............

So head to head, you let the Audi get the jump on the Acura, and then in testing, you brake torque the Audi, but not the Acura, which also benefits from it. I’ll admit, at this point it’s really my fault for watching anything posted on this channel.

Turbo engines are gonna start costing customers more in the long run.

Thinking the result of Acura vs Audi had everything to do with elevation and turbocharger. At sea level, I am almost certain the result would be different.

Andre, you almost got it right..." has a good old VR6 narrow-angle V6 ". The two don't mix. VR6 is a VR6 and a V6 is a V6. A VR6 has the characteristic of an IL-6 engine and a V6 has the characteristic of a V6 engine. The VR in German is for "Verkürzt Reihen" which in English loosely means "Shortened Rows" or "Shortened InLine" in engine language. Therefore VR6 is Verkürzt Reihen6 or Shortened InLine6.

That Q7 is one of the best cars ever made and one of the best cars money can buy right now.

I have the atlas 2.0t. That thing is quick. Plus with a 6 yr 72,000 bumper to bumper on the 2019 it’s a very good deal.

Acura will obviously be the fastest. Light, good hp and torque, no lag.

I’ll take the Acura, it might not be a Lexus but it’s the most reliable out of the three. Until this happens to us, we will never know how bad it is having to pay thousands and thousands of dollars in repairs with your hard earned money. Stay away from German cars, and luxury vehicles if they’re unreliable

Turn off traction control on that Acura and it will blow the Audi's launch out of the water. And in handling tests SH-AWD will dominate.

I will take Acura 100 times over Audi and VW.

Love that the fast lane tests a mile above sea level to give you a realistic 0-60 time because no one lives exactly at sea level

Funny fact, the entry level engine for Audi q7 in North America is the 2.0 L4, in Europe the entry level engine is a 3.0 v6

I own a 2019. Acura Mex Aspec and both of those dont compare

Of course the Audi won, high altitude = big advantage for turbo engines, in comparison to the naturally aspirated Acura.

The Q7 2.0T has to really be making 300 horsepower and torque. 8.0 seconds to 60 is very impressive for something that heavy and above sea level.

Why not bring the supercharged V6 Q7 to compete against the other V6 SUV's? It sounds pretty awesome too

There is a very little known feature about the A4 and it wouldn't surprised me the Q7 would have it too: launch control (allegedly all Audis have it). The Q7 can probably be even faster. Regardless the Audi 2.0L/DSG combination is a gem probably underrated (HP wise) and my bet was on the Q7 as soon as I read the title of this video. My 2017 A4 absolutely smokes my previous V6 300+ HP although the latter was making unbelievably satisfying sound when pushed, something I will never say about the 2.0L engine. Faster does not necessarily means more fun.

For that drag race, i think the mdx hybrid will be better.

As you guys say - No replacement for displacement. These numbers will be very different at sea level as a mile above see level is not level playing field for normally aspirated engine. Among these 3 my money would be on the Acura, if the same test was done at sea level. I drive an ecoboost F-150 that can kick ass on anyone of these 3 any time, even with max payload on its back. I have the MDX too (2017) and hate the way it accelerates. I think the most fun vehicle with practical utility is the F-150 Lariat with 2.7 L ecoboost.

my dad has an atlas that is awd and i don’t know what it is but it accelerates really fast and revs over 4k rpm but no mods have been done to it it also sounds insane. i feel like it’s one of the cars that vw was testing with and released to the public on accident.

It's ironic that I am saying this being that I just purchased a Honda Accord with a 2.0t over a Nissan Maxima with a V6. But I would take the V6 Acura over the Audi. Not many places are 1 mile above sea level, and V6's usually have more power up top. If your doing a 1/4 mile, or 0-60, your probably going to lose in the V6. However, if you are trying to pass someone on a 2 lane highway going 60+ miles per hour, I thing the Acura would come out on top.

The Acura MDX does 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds at sea level. Which means that it would go faster than the Audi.

There isn't one SUV with a 4 banger. There isn't one SUV in this video. Crossovers aren't SUVs.

I have a 19 MDX Adv Sport Hybrid and live/drive 5000-7200 feet. The 3 electric motors come in handy when the 3.0L engine runs short on power because of the elevation.

I have combined a complete list of every 7-passenger Crossover on the market right now that is powered by an naturally aspirated V6. Every vehicle in this list is FWD unless you get an AWD option. The only exception is the Dodge Durango it is RWD and has an AWD option which makes a difference when towing especially if you tow boats or anything that will be used a boat ramps. Simply because you have more weight on the back tires and since they are powered by the rear wheels you have better traction. A big thing to keep in mind if you don't option up for AWD in the FWD competitors. Hope this is helpful to anyone shopping for a crossover. I feel that the lack of information causes people to buy products they later end up regretting. For most of us,most of the time,in most passenger vehicles,2.0 turbos are all the engine we really need.They may not sound as good but where can we really drive like that?Reality can be painful to motorheads,but I'm an old man!

I hate how tfl does a mile above sea level it never gives you a good idea of how the car really is. They always test good cars that no one really tries but ruin it because they are above sea level

Q7 is a great car. With the 3.0 it becomes a journalists dream. Probably one of the favorites of the year.

"Drag racing is more about torque than about horsepower" No... Acceleration is always about horsepower and torque is a component of the HP calculation so they go hand in hand. The higher the rate of work you can do, the faster you go, period. At elevation, your NA engine is losing about 3-5 % per 1000 ft where as your turbocharge engine is roughly 1% per 1000ft. So at high elevation, your turbocharged engine, thanks to the compressed air, will lose less torque over an RPM range which means it will lose less power over the RPM range than a comparable NA engine.

That 2.0T in the Audi is under rated from the factory. My 2016 GTI is rated at 258ftlbs and made over 280ftlbs at the wheels bone stock. As well as 230hp at the wheels when it's rated for 210hp. Of course Dyno numbers aren't terribly comparable, but it's clear they're underrated from the factory.

I think the Acura would have defeated the Audi, but Roman's driving skills are less than adequate. Also, if you used Sport Mode on the MDX, and had a proper launch, it would have beaten the Q7 hands down.

The MDX Sport Hybrid is super quick, even more than the normal SH-AWD.

As I see q7 started from two pedals, like launch control. If MDX starts from two pedals, it is quicker than 7 seconds, but harmful for gearbox. I dont know how MDX shows 8.45 to 60 mph while mine car shows 7.5 0-100 kmph. Maybe mine 2014 mdx has 6 shifts gearbox, and yours 9 gears Андрюха здарова

Actually VW Atlas has a 2.0T as well that makes 235bp, but fwd only. That would be a great test. VW group 2.0T engine rules.

At sea level, the Acura would have eaten the Audi. 290hp isn't that at 1 mile above sea level. Forced induction (turbo here), will always make more power at higher elevations then a N/A engine.

Skoda kodiaq which is the vw atlas come with the 2.0 T that the Q7 has got in Europe strange why the vw have kept the very old vR6 going in America, it an engine they have dropped in most other markets. Any VR6 left have turbos on them

Good for Andre to point out that Atlas is the most practical. That’s the main reason you buy one of these after all... Would MDX or Q7 be that much better than the Atlas if they had to be as practical as the Atlas? BTW Nice to see that Acura finally has a decent red paint.

Great review. Have a suggestion - Have in-gear acceleration figures i.e. 20 to 80, 40 to 80 etc. Will be applicable for on-road situations.
