But you know, these days or more are never as important as the entire franchise. And what Colton and the online reactions are saying is that this is the first DC movie in years that actually gets you excited for the next installment of the DC Universe. IN a little bit I want to hear from Colton and author Adam lance garcia about their thoughts on this, but I want to pose a question to all of you: is the MCU about to decline, and will the DCU rise to take its place?
Doug: What do you mean? The MCU is awesome! And DC made such hits as Black Adam, and Batgirl.
Oooooh.
Doug: Too soon? Sorry.
Look man, I agree, I love the MCU, we cover every second of MCU content on the channel, but you have to admit that there has been a downward trend. Maybe not in quality, but in enthusiasm.
Doug: Why whatever do you mean?
Well let me explain. WE all know that for the first 11 years the MCU redefined blockbusters, they had such a hit streak building this mega franchise, and it culminated in avengers endgame, which was like a love letter to fans and culminated in the infinity saga.
Then a lot of fans started to say that they should have stopped the MCU there, because the movie felt like a natural end. Now, I always thought that was ridiculous because I am a kong time comic book fan, where there is one rule that is always true [watchmen, nothing ever ends]. After the endgame, I was still excited for all of the stories Marvel had left to adapt.
And then when Marvel announced what they had coming up at San Diego Comic Con, it was an embarrassment of riches. More taika waititi thor, more scott derrickson dr strange, more spider-man-the MCU expanded to premium streaming content. Marvel lost some big stars, but they had a few existing heroes who could carry the franchise as they introduced new heroes to the saga.
But then the studio with the incredible lucky streak hit some pretty big snags. IN 2018, Disney fired James Gunn for some old, disgusting tweets he made. But get this, the tweets were not new. When Gunn was hired by Marvel in 2013, he acknowledged the tweets and apologized for them. But still, he was fired and Guardians 3 was scheduled. Now, a year later he would be rehired. But Gunn had already missed a year of preproduction work on Guardians 3, and had agreed to direct the suicide squad for warner brothers.
So now, Gunn was making movies for the competition and his own MCU franchise would be delayed. This is a big deal, because guardians 3 was originally scheduled to open phase 4, in may of 2020.
Then, in February, Bob Iger stepped down as the president of the Walt Disney company.
Doug: What’s that got to do with anything?
Wwii, maybe nothing, but I have a theory I’ll explain about that in a little bit. Then, of course, the corona virus hit [montage of newscasts?]. Marvel projects that were finished-like Black widow-were able to be released in theaters. And other projects that were filming-like Wanda Vision, Loki, Shang Chi, the Eternals, and Falcon and the Winter soldier-all delayed.
Marvel’s release schedule seemed to be changing every week. Originally, multiverse of madness was supposed to be released a few months after wandavision, not a year later. You get the idea, you were there.
Marvel’s biggest loss was the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. In addition to being a wonderful person and gifted actor, he was the star of the franchise’s most promising franchise. But, in 2021, the MCU came back. The year was promising for the streaming shows, with Wandavision, Loki, falcon and the winter soldier, hawkeye and what if all being bangers, or at least really strong.
The movies were a bit hit and miss, but solid. They clashed with Scarlett Johansson over the streaming release of black Widow, but they settled out of court.
