Will Fruit Make you Fat? How to Monitor Fructose Lately, I've had a lot of people asking me to do a video on how carbohydrates work, specifically, how fruit works within the body. You see, fruits got this bad rep. We all seem to think that fruit is horrible because it's a sugar, and it's a carb, and we're living in the low carb generation and yada, yada. The thing is, fruits are important. Come on. They've got a lot of vitamins, they've got a lot of things that we need, and let's not forget the simple fact that they're low calorie. When it all comes comes down to it, I know some people will disagree, but it is somewhat of a calories in versus calories out game.
I want to tell you in this video when you can eat your fruit to get the most effect from it and to make sure that that fructose, the sugar that is found in fruit, doesn't get converted into fat. Before I tell you the best time to eat your fruit, I want to explain how carbohydrates are stored and how they're somewhat metabolized within the body.
You see, carbs are important source of energy for us. They're important for brain function, they're important for muscle function.

When you consume carbohydrates, they're stored in the body in one of two forms. They're either stored as muscle glycogen or liver glycogen. What that means is it's a stored form of carbohydrate. Your body will either shuttle those carbohydrates into storage within the muscle or into storage within the liver.
The difference is that glucose or the simple monosaccharides that come from regular starches and things like that, those are shuttled in as muscle glycogen and only muscle glycogen. Then you've got fructose. Fructose is shuttle in to the liver as liver glycogen. Glucose will not replenish liver glycogen or liver carbohydrates stores and fructose will not replenish muscle glycogen or muscle carbohydrates stores. It's that simple. There's no crisscrossing.
The liver can usually only hold roughly two to three glasses of orange juice worth of fructose or worth of carbohydrates. Whereas the muscles, obviously, you've got a lot more of them throughout your body can hold significantly more. You can get away with eating more starches or more regular sugars or other kinds of glucose than you can fructose.
You see, what happens is when you consume too much fructose, the liver glycogen gets full and it triggers an insomatic process that tells the body to start storing the extra fructose as body fat. More often than not, it goes right to the midsection where we don't really want it. This is terrible if you're trying to get in the best possible shape.
Well, let me tell you, if you crave some fruit, having it before your workout is probably going to be the best time. Why? Because the body is going to want to use that fructose first because it's readily available for energy. Before it's processed down the liver and stored it's glycogen, it's flown to the blood stream and readily available. The perfect time that you can use it when you're in the gym.
Also, you're going to burn through that liver glycogen really quick. You might as well eat your fruit, let yourself have some fun and enjoy the fruit right before you go to the gym. One thing that a lot of people don't really know about is the fact that if your liver glycogen levels are low, we don't have a lot of those glycogens storage in your liver, your body has to produce alanine from the muscles. What that means is that your body starts breaking down the muscle tissue, which means that you can catabolize. You can loss that lean muscle tissue.
We have to remember that lean muscle tissue, even if we're not trying to get bulky is ultimately what is going to help keep our metabolism sky rocketed so that we can burn more fat and have more energy throughout the day. They're you have it. Eating your fruit pre-workout is going to be not only help you spare some muscle and let you have your fruit, but it's also going to give you the energy that you need.
Let's talk about when not to eat your fruit. You're not going to eat you fruit right after your workout. You see because after you've burn through that liver glycogen, your body starts pulling storage from the muscles. While the first place that your body is going to restore glycogen after a workout specifically is within the muscles. You want to restore the muscle glycogen first.
After a workout, get the muscle glycogen filled up by eating starches, and regular glucose, and regular carbohydrates and leave the fruit out of the equation. Remember, it doesn't take much fruit to fill up the liver glycogen. We can take care of that later.

Yes what is annoying is the best time to eat fruit is before your workout, but on the other hand we want to be in a fasted state whilst working out WTF. I guess it’s trial and error each to there own.

I love how fruit tastes so much more delicious when you are on a low-carb diet. Fruit becomes your desert. Cupcakes, icecream, candy, etc. tastes terrible after you have gone low carb.

8 years into eating mainly fruits and vegetables and im still waiting for the disease and inflammation.... in fact my allergies are now nearly non-existent, im stronger than i was 8 years ago, i sleep better and im in the best body shape ive ever been. Please cut the bullshit fear on fruit sugar... most studies are done based on man made sugars, which are NOT the same as fruit sugar which comes with live enzymes, nutrients, vitamins, and fibre.

I usually eat pineapple before my workout and damn do I get energised. It's the best pre workout I ever experienced. Watermelons are also good.

My husband used to compete in bodybuilding 25 yrs ago....they counted calories in and out...macros counting didn't even exist. He looked amazing and was healthy. He says the industry has become too complex cause people trying to make $$ by feeding them misinformation....just keep it simple eat a balanced diet with the occasional treat within your calories. That is it. You could literally not eat all day then have a big Mac meal each day and lose weight....you would feel like crap but it is about calories. ...

I eat at least 4 bananas a day along with other fruits and I’ve maintained the same weight and body fat for years no calorie counting and restriction. Fruits have so many benefits with all the vitamins your body needs to function.

You could eat 2 avocado and get the same benefits you got from those four bananas. You actually need more than 4 bananas to get your daily dose of potassium.

What about if you're doing intermittent fasting? You said that in your other videos in order to promote fat loss you should be fasted when working out but if your eat fruit right before your workout you are already breaking your fast.

I was on a strict Keto diet for almost 2 weeks and didn't eat fruits whatsoever, I only ate meat, cheese, eggs and veggies. For the past couple of days i've been feeling nauseated, and sick, then out of the blue I was craving watermelon and strawberries. I immediately went to the store after work to buy some fruit, I even bought some fruit flavored candy, just to eat on the way home, I took a couple bites and nearly gagged. It was a sugary mess. When I got home I ate some watermelon and strawberries, and it never tasted so good. I think either I was deficient of vitamin C, or my sugar dropped too low, maybe both.

the reason low carb works is because you minimize blood sugar spikes. cinnamon and vinegar also minimize blood sugar spikes. Before I eat fruit or anything sweet, I will take two capsules of cinnamon (you can get it at walmart). Most people should avoid juice, but sometimes I make fresh juice and i will add vinegar to it so that I'm not getting a straight shot of fructose. If you want to be able to eat lots of fruit, do intermittent fasting as well. eating fruit multiple times a day will keep blood sugar too high for fat loss, and will make great conditions for weight gain.

They also have important micro-nutrients to stay alive like Bananas is potassium rich, which inhibits sugar cravings and rests muscle. But it’s still important to not use that as an excuse to eat only fruits instead of salads with meat.

When should you have your fruit when you're intermittent fasting and break your fast in the afternoon and work out after waking up? Last meal of the day or it doesn't matter when you IF?

Wonderful, Thomas. I was wondering about this last night when my fruit craving got the best of me and I had to have a Chobani desert with 3 strawberries and half a dozen small cherries 🍒 which were really sweet right here from Hollister, CA. So, I have watched a lot of your videos and they truly do make a lot of sense. I actually lost 7 pounds in about 2 weeks without working out. This was when I was kind of half trying it out. However, now me and my wife are following the intermittent fasting regiment and working out BEFORE we break the fast for the max fat loss benefit. I was actually wondering when to eat fruits because of the fructose, but in this video it says to partake either first thing in the morning (when we would be fasting), or before the workout (while we still have not broken our fast). Is there another time to eat fruits that will not cause as much of a loss in benefit? And just a disclaimer for anyone who decides to comment... I am not looking for any negativity. So if you are trolling and looking for a chance to bash Thomas or his methods, please keep your comments to yourself. I would like to hear his view on this as the majority of the things I have seen make sense.

I eat regardless of exercise routine, in the morning daily 1 banana, grapes,blueberries, strawberries,cucumber, tomato,carrot.And I have grass fed meats, and organic everything with no GMOs.Best diet ever.But too much of anything can be bad obviously

Thank you!!! I've been hearing you should have high glycemic fruit AFTER workouts in your post workout shake because it helps move amino acids from your protein to your muscles. But I think you understand and explained the process better and further esp with the difference that you should have fructose before and glucose after. This is very helpful! But since you added that it's okay to have a little fruit in the morning, I wonder if on an active day if it's safe to have other starchy carbs like sweet potatoes before bedtime. This is the time I want these carbs the most, and not sugar just these sorts of carbs. Is this what the body needs or is this how you gain weight?

I eat 8 bananas a day a full watermelon per day and many other fruits along with my vegan diet and I have extreme low body fat and muscular !! fruits don't make you fat !! and tons of quinoa and sweet potatoes and brown rice ! and many green veggies as much as possible !!

No fruits don't make you fat. However adding fat to it will. On the other hand you can cut out fats and then have hormonal deficiencies....Eating fruit poses a risk because fruits contain significant quantities of macronutrient. Macronutrients require management. Vegetables are all about micronutrient so there is less less need to manage its consumption.

I must respectfully disagree. This information applies only to processed and concentrated forms of fructose, not to fructose that is delivered in it's whole natural matrix of vitamin co-factors and fiber which interact with our metabolism in a more natural way. And although the muscles' glycogen storing capacity is greater than the liver's for obvious reasons, the liver's is actually much greater than you have made it sound. Glucose increases insulin levels which is not necessarily a bad thing, unless in excess. In fact we all know it is desirable after a hard workout. Fructose on the other hand tends to bring insulin down which has a balancing effect and thus in fact minimizes fat deposition. Only processed and concentrated forms of fructose and/or extreme excess consumption of fruit or any excess of any kind, for that matter, will cause fat build up. Fructose has been unfairly demonized. I have never been leaner than when I eat more fruit. Regards!

To be more specific. Fructose does not require insulin to be used and stored.

Fructose does however require insulin to be used as energy. Fructose doesn't influence insulin, so it can't be stored in the cell to be metabolized into energy. Only aslong there is glucose in the mix, in can hop along and make use of glycolysis to be converted into pyruvate, which then converts into ATP. Once glycolysis shuts down (usually when insulin drops, glucose is empty or an excess of ATP has been produced), the pyruvate attained from the fructose won't be turned into ATP, and it will reconvert itself back into DHAP (a step in the glycolysis/fructolysis pathway) to be converted into triglyceride and to be stored in the liver, creating a higher level of triglycerides and a fatty liver (something you get from drinking lots of soda) This is the reason for the fear mongering of why fructose, and eventually fruits are "bad". What people don't seem to realize is that fruit is not 100% fructose. More like 2/5th of the sugar in fruit is fructose, and the remaining sugar is glucose and sucrose. And a piece of fruit doesn't really contain THAT much sugar (unless we talk about bananas). The glucose in fruit makes sure the fructose in fruit gets metabolized as energy...So keep eating your fruit.

inculoasorata thank-you. The people wondering if fruit will make you fat are already fat and have a concentrated diet of processed food anyway. You can't compare the sugars and carbs you get from fruit to something processed, period! A diet consisting mainly of fruit will not get you fat. People will believe anything on the internet. My friend tried to tell me about the bad sugar and carbs in fruit and bought whip cream instead. He probably watched this video.

And because of this, since I've moved to intermittent fasting with a morning fasted workout, I pretty much had to cut fruit out completely, since there's no appropriate place to fit it in.

Is there a specific amount of time to eat fruit before a workout that's ideal or does it not really matter? I usually eat a banana or a pear around 30-40 minutes before a workout.

ofc not, he basically hit the genetic lotary and it doesn't matters what he eats it all works for him and he thinks it's the same for everybody. An avarage fruit has 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams. I.e 5 apples means 120 grams of sugar. 1 chocolate (standart size) has 65 grams of sugar, even if that sugar is msg sugar, still fruits offer a very bad trade off vitamins vs sugar.

That's the same question I had when he said it was okay to eat fruit in the morning. Obviously fruit would break your fast. I'm guessing if you're doing intermittent fasting to lose weight, you wouldn't eat fruit, but if you're already around your desired weight and are working out heavily in the morning, fruit first thing would be okay.

Organic is bread in exactly the same way as GMOs. Both are bread to be sweeter, there is zero difference in fructose\glucose between the two.

Plenty of people have got ripped or whatever while eating regular meals, the key is staying in shape. They make it seem like jogging doesn't burn fat anymore, I ate rather normal and.jogged every morning and would stay in shape just fine. I drank alot of dr pepper and Gatorade, hahah so yeah keto isn't the only way of course. It helps alot though

Pedro Hernandez Being "ripped" doesn't equate to being heathy my guy. I know plenty of guys that have a bodybuilder physique that are probably as unhealthy if not more so then a morbidly obese man. Can eat regular (assuming you mean the standard American diet) meals and stay fit? Sure, to an extent, but again the outside doesn't always reflect the inside. Eating one ingredient foods is the best way to go.

When you workout fasted you do burn a lot of fat BUT it has to be low rep high volume with no cardio to minimize the muscle loss, otherwise you gonna be getting leaner and leaner. If you do a "regular" workout and want to bulk lean muscle, his advice of eating fruit right before the workout is on point.

This video is not entirely accurate. You should have added that "no fat will be added as long as you are in a caloric deficit" Even someone who eats only fruit cannot gain fat as long as total caloric intake falls within a deficit. You cannot magically gain fat while being in a caloric deficit regardless of type of carbohydrate. When you say "The liver will store fat if you eat too much fructose" People are going to think u mean even during a caloric deficit. You should clear that up for the noobs. You cannot gain fat period unless you are in a caloric surplus.
