Will I get an airbrush? + other questions - Q&A 

You two make me wish I were a young modeler. I am in my sixties and built hundreds of models over the years and am still at it. Currently working on the Susqahanna steam ship. Kit is from 1979. Lots of details and rigging. Fun. Thanks for doing an impressive and informative series of videos.

Hey Owen, I daresay one of the reasons you are so popular on youtube is due to the fact that you DON'T use an airbrush. Airbrush users on youtube are the equivalent of a dollar store (or poundland in your area); there are millions of them, tripping over each other, all saying the same things. Difficult to seperate the wheat from the chaff. What made me interested in watching your channel was your presentation, what you used to make a model (he uses Humbrol acrylic and Enamel?!?! He uses watered down PVA?!?!? He doesn't use all the sexy brands and special hobby washes, etc?!?!? hardware store filler?!?!?!?), and he brush paints...and look at the results!! I model in a similar fashion to yourself. I have an airbrush that I have used off and on for the last 20 years or so, but enjoy the brush more. I use 'non-popular' brands amongst scale modelers, and similar home/art products instead of the latest fads that you see on every other channel. You have become a symbol amongst the non-airbrushing crowd, where most of us are made to look like second rate citizens on most scale model forums, books and other media, and where the standard phrase is always ' if you are at all serious about modelling, you NEED an airbrush' or 'You cannot get a good finish with brush painting' etc. You provide proof to the contrary (even though many of us old farts have been at it for a long time, we don't make great videos and talk all that well to a new generation of modellers that might take up the brush instead of spraying chemicals into the air). So be careful about using an airbrush for your channel. I suspect one of the charms at your disposal is the fact that you are different in this regard, and show such great results, giving many aspiring brush painters a look at what can be achieved, and how it can be achieved. Whatever you decide, I look forward to your next build videos.

Saw my question! It was the first model aircraft and I got my first kit (a spitfire) from the imperial war museum in London. Then I stopped modelling for 7 years years now I'm 16 in Australia loving it!

LOL!! You two are a crack up! Agree with the comments below re brush vs airbrush. You are pushing the envelope with what is possible with brush painting and the results are excellent. We don’t need ‘quick’, I watch for the detailed and helpful commentary which culminates in great results... regardless of time factors.

Your videos helped me out massively with my first kit Owen, and I built a Tamiya Panzer IV H after seeing your Ausf.J build - was originally going to hand brush it but committed to the hobby through the build and bought all the gear, including an Iwata Eclipse and Compressor. I would absolutely do the same again without hesitation - I feel like having the airbrush is absolutely fundamental to modelmaking. They're easy to use (once you learn proper thinning etc.) and make every step of the painting process easier and better. It will not make it faster though, as it will open your builds up to new techniques like modulation and hairspray chipping. Given the production quality of your channel I feel it would make an excellent video series detailing your move from brush painting to an airbrush, and learning it in the process. Most videos are done from a knowledgeable perspective, whereas this would be something fresh and informative for people looking to make the same move. With that said, you also have also built an excellent channel for yourself with a focus on brush painting so you can't really make a bad choice. I will say though, that once you use an airbrush you'll be kicking yourself for not having one for all those years. PS. Kendall getting stuck into the Dragon kits, very nice.

Kendall, you can usually pick up a Cylon Centurion and Battlestar from the reimagined series for less than £20 on Amazon, a Cylon Raider for around £30 if you look around. They're just incredibly fun, and easy kits. I've built a couple of Raiders and Battlestars in the year and a half I've been into this hobby--also gifted them. Sci-Fi builds are more my jam--managed to recently import a U.S.S. Defiant (DS9) model kit from the USA, although it cost an arm and a leg (£33 for the kit, £38 in shipping/duty/import fees)...it'll be my winter project that I'll also light.

Get an airbrush.... and get out of the friend-zone, lol.

If you are going to get an airbrush just to “build models faster”, then I don’t recommend it. The reason you use an airbrush is to augment your level of detail and skill of your models. With the airbrush, you can create tonal variation and do many chipping techniques. With the airbrush, you can also do soft and hard edge camouflage, as well as having various transparencies of color. I’m yet to learn the full potential of an airbrush, but the reason to get one is to make nicer models, not build them faster. Secondly, the airbrush won’t necessarily build faster models, you need to clean it, take care of it, and do quite a bit of masking if you want hard edge lined and aren’t comfortable with doing freehand camo. Either way, just think about the real reason you want an airbrush: for “speed”, or to build nicer models?

Great video and great channel mate,If you decide go get an airbrush just get a cheap set with the compressor, don't spend hundreds of euros (or pounds haha) for an iwata or an h&s. I'm modifying 1:18 diecast and a cheap 0,5 airbrush works great for me. Have a great one!

I am terrible at painting by hand and all my models for years would come out looking awful so I gave up. Since I discovered the airbrush and decal solution, my models are a joy to make and paint and trying that got me back into modelling. Woohoo :)

Painting with a brush is painfull but you can get almost the same result with airbrush but what thinner is the best to use

Aztek A7778 paintbrush best one i've ever had, No need to constantly change needles with this one u just change the nozzle.

A great video guys. Firstly, nice mug Owen! I have the same one by my side almost all the time. Kendall, if you fancy doing a Saturn V, & feel a bit masochistic, the Revell kit would be a good choice. It does have its 'quirks', but builds up into a great model. I did mine up into Apollo 11. Here's a possible for you both. Do a diorama between you!

Great show! You guys crack me up. But a serious question about painting. I want to ease back into modelling after a 40 year hiatus. Back then I "thought" that spray enamel gave me great results. None of the RU-vidrs use it these days - it's all airbrush which is understandable. But like you, I'm not sure I want to make that commitment yet. Obviously not good for detail, but with masking it can do quite a lot - might be a big help on kick starting your Bismarck. Wondered if you'd considered it as a halfway step to airbrush, or if there's some reason it's not considered suitable.

Can i make panel line washes from acrylic paint? And also could give me some tips to mask of the canopy when im using revell acrylics, because it doesn't scratch off that easily..

I think using an airbrush is not as fun, brush painting is just so much more fun then just going at it with an airbrush and boom done, I mean other people could be diffident but that’s my opinion.

Get an airbrush, Quick tip, cheap compressor from eBay or on special at Lidl or Aldi but spend a bit more on a airbrush as you will notice the difference in flow and control.

Hi guys, Getting an airbrush is the gigantic step in quality finish. When you get one you might realise there is one drawback: it is so much faster to paint a model but the preparation required is very time consuming. Setting the work space with some sort of spray boot, thinning the paint outside the pot, check paint flow and adjust the paint thinner ratio, finally paint and after that having to clean all the mess, unassemble the airbrush for a thorough clean up. Not forgetting all the masking required beforehand. As a first step you can buy one of those cheap Chinese airbrushes (you can get a simple one for as less as £16), so if you make mistakes on handling it and ruin it the loss isn't huge. And you will practice to get the hang of it. When you get more confident it's time to get one of the "big boys". This is similar to driving a car, as soon as you get your driving licence you're not going to buy an Aston Martin, you start with an old banger so you can bump into bollards until you get your spacial awareness. Keep the good work coming and keep trying and learning new skills.

I don't use an Airbrush. Won a 1st, 2 x 2nd, and 2 x 3rd places at only show I competed in this year.(IPMS Phantom Phlashers' 2017). Just my preference. Will probably use mine in a limited way for some cammo and chipping. As for now, I like alternating layers of acrylics/oils for blending effects. Some of the airbrush "modulation" looks just like what it is...Too fake. Again...just my preference. Rock on. Oh...cute couple

This is the Owen Kendall Quick kits comedy show...I think I still don't like Owen getting an airbrush. Paint brushing is like a heritage for Owen and most of you. The time for making it what makes the hobby more nice(or irritating). I love the Owen who brushes models in the best way. Anyway, My father bought me an FW190 A-8 in 1:72.
