This episode finds us deep in the heart of desert country, where only the sagebrush grows. This super unique and somewhat rare 1974 ford f350 super camper special (not to be confused with a camper special) is a truck I’ve had my eye on, and we’re about to see if we can make it run again after being parked in this spot 21 years ago.

I had to watch this again and noticed all the wasps flying around, hope you didn't get stung, those things hurt, bees no problem but wasps really hurt, just a really cool truck I had to share this with some friends..:)

Haha, I was wondering if anyone would notice the wasps, and to be honest I didn’t really pay attention to them until I was done, and noticed they were flying out of every crease or crevice on this truck! Thanks for sharing.

Hey RW, that is a cool old truck that I have never seen before. Not a ton of rust for the age. I, would definitely pull the motor , in a garage, and put in a 352/390/460. End of this story is: Surprise, surprise!

Hopefully we’ll be able to swap a motor in there in the future.

Very cool truck. I imagine the 4-speed transmission was pretty rare on Super Camper Specials - the ones I've seen over the years have been mostly high-trim trucks with automatic (but maybe those were the ones that got taken care of and not worked to death? It's always refreshing to see a plainer model that's survived.) My grandfather actually had a 1974 SCS with a 460 for about 9 years - used as both a farm pickup and a camping rig. He joked it got 8 mpg uphill and downhill, with or without a load. The joke probably wasn't that far off - he was the type who wrote down the mileage every time he got gas. He eventually replaced it with a Chevy Class C motorhome (van chassis) with a 400 small block and a Ford pickup with an inline six. Considering the rust inside this engine, the bores on those two cylinders with the water in them are probably shot. I would jump right to swapping in another FE engine that's running - whatever you can get your hands on that - and then figure out later if it's worth trying to rebuild this core, which may need a couple of sleeves. The fact the radiator is full isn't really proof that there isn't a cracked block; someone could have been topping it up. My guess is that it got parked for a reason, the man probably honestly doesn't know or remember what happened, he's not trying to screw you but around a farm, sometimes you don't know if an employee was beating on it, or what, and then 20 years goes by. Could be an interesting teardown video on this engine - wonder if the I Do Cars guy would be interested. I know he has never done an FE.

I agree, if I get the chance to work on this truck again, I’ll definitely be swapping the motor out, that’ll be the quickest way to get it moving, there’s a couple other 70’s ford trucks on the farm there that I may be able to swap a motor out of, so we’ll see when I get the chance to go back there. There’s also quite a few other vehicles on the farm there that I’m hoping to work on yet, we go back every year, so we’ll see!

Any farm with 70s Ford trucks on it has to have something going for it. The Fe engines take a different bellhousing than other Ford V8s, but they were used through 1976. 77-79 they were replaced with the 351M/400 which bolt to a 460 bellhousing and I've never compared the mounts to an FE as I've never felt like the FE needed to be replaced with a 335/385 or vice versa. But there are good FE engines for sale sometimes on FB marketplace - someone ditching a low-mile rebuild for a Coyote swap or something like that. Maybe $500-$1000 if you are patient and lucky. 390 and larger get most of the attention so a 2 bbl 352/260 could just be hanging out. @@Rustwrangler

360, not picking on you sir just thought I'd help, and as far as Facebook marketplace here lately atleast around the mid West States where I'm at there's been a few lower mileage ft not fe so the medium truck industrial engine 330, and the 391 it may be 361 but i don't think so engines show up for sale $300, and the other 330 was $250 and the 361 or 391 was almost $800 but they would be viable options I've seriously thought about picking up the $250 330 ft just to have it, and a 352 that needs gaskets was supposed to run also $200

It’s a shame, that rig is solid, I hope you can make it run with the original engine or a donor one

I’m thinking it may be easier/quicker to just swap another motor in, hopefully in the future we can revisit this truck.

Thanks for the video! It was great to see the innovations that Ford incorporated in the camper special. As for not getting it running - yet, well at least you showed up! George

Excellent, that is a cool truck and never knew Ford had such a beast, Total bummer about the engine valve train rust ,I was really hoping to see you get it running and drive it! hope you can get to own it and do more with it.💪

To be honest, I never really noticed for years that the truck was not just a regular camper special, until the farmer showed me the spare tire on the side of the bed. But there is a pretty good chance we’ll be revisiting this one in the future.

AS others have noted it's a shame that it was parked with the hood up. I wonder if it was left open to deter pack rats from nesting under the hood.? I have a set of heads from a 1974 Ford F250 for a 360 that I have been pushing around my garage the better part of a decade. If you decide to buy the truck and revive it please reach out and we can figure out how to get those heads to you if they will work. Consider them my contribution to the cause and way of saying thank you for the content you put out. That pick up is too rare and too nice to let it just continue to decay. Good luck and let me know. I don’t think this one was left open to deter pack rats just due to the fact that most of the other rigs on the farm have the hoods closed. I appreciate the offer on the heads, I’ll definitely keep that in mind, thank you!

Looks like you need to pull the engine and clean/replace the internals..

I hope it doesn’t have a blown head gasket!!
@Rustwrangler

I don’t think it had a blown head gasket since the coolant was still full, I think water got into the motor some other way.

Not a longer bed than normal, longer wheelbase than normal. 140", instead of 133"

That’s correct, I didn’t realize I had said that wrong until later on when I edited the video.

Foe every car & Truck sitting for 20 + years,,you must. Rebuilt motor,,if it runs great,,even if it has oil it dries up and everything needs to be lubricated,,most car revivers on You Tube destroys great running cars,,if it is a keeper,,,treat it with care
