With the help of my dad, I restored a 1952 Army Jeep. It took up two bays of his shop for a year. There is a seductive Siren’s voice that whispers in your ear that since you already have it this far apart, you might as well pull that component too, since you got it to this point. Not to mention the frame and body parts that looked ok until you took the sandblaster to them.

Speaking from experience I can say that starting with a little better and more complete Jeep will save you tons of time but also money because you don't have to replace parts or buy missing parts. Looking forward to the resto!

The two white straps holding the tow strap…If you flip them over and pull on loose end, they come undone. Learned that when I had a paper route when I was a kid 😎

I agree! It doesn't have any good body panels to work with. A good chassis doesn't mean much when you can buy or fabricate one. If you want a basic racing style interior, then go for it, but it's nearly impossible to properly restore this interior. Crusher it is.

You can do it. I was a founding member of the Atlanta four wheel drive club in 71. We rebuilt some badly damaged ones, but most of this one needs to be replaced. Collins Brothers jeep in Texas has every part available for cj's

Hi Ray. That jeep looks more like a "retirement project" I can't believe that you are possibly serious about restoring this old beast. By the time you buy all the parts and the time you will need to work on it, you could have enough $$ in it y'all could have bought a new jeep. But I am guessing you are just playing with us. To someone who just looks at the costs involved, as you are, it's certainly not worth it. To someone who wants it for the long term, (like his Silverado), it's the just cost of his new _hobby._ Some people spend thousands on golf. Others on PWCs. There are plenty of people who love building/restoring cars, and many who spend huge amounts on offroad toys that they take out, drive around, break, fix, then do it all again, because for them half the fun is restoring/fixing/customising the cars. And then there is the satisfaction of bringing it back to life. Knowing that _I accomplished this._

Talking about putting one of those tow straps on the ball hitch. I was driving school bus one winter in Aberdeen , SD in the mid 1990s. I mis-judged a turn on a foggy morning and ended up sliding the back end into a snow drift and part way down the ditch. The garage sent out a large 4x4 Jeep. Those guys did just that, hooked the strap to the ball. They pulled the bus out and also the ball sending it through the radiator on the bus. The boss had more than a few choice words about that one.

There are plenty of catalogs and companies where you can build a jeep from new parts. The only valuable part is the VIN tag - if you got just that and a title, you got a Jeep. Time & money will get you a show queen to a bush buggy. Build it to your purpose.

On my old 327 Chevy CJ I put a fiberglass tub and a flip up front end . No more rust there and the entire front end ( including fenders grill and headlights ) just lifted up and rested on the windshield . The engine was wide open for working on and the front tires made for two nice fishing seats with the front end up .

I watched a C10 try to snatch a mud stuck Blazer once. The C10's body bolts were rusted through. When he got 6 feet of slack and punched the 350 in the C10, when the slack got sucked up, the C10's cab moved forward 8 inches off the frame. Blazer did not move more than 1 inch.

When was just out of high-school had a CJ-7 late seventies. The frame was set up where it could hold a sb Ford engine with a change in mounts, 289 or 302 if I remember correctly . I had it fixed up pretty well and had a blast running around with it during warm weather. But being a young kid with a good income and still living with my folks my eye soon found something bigger and better. Now I wished I still had it. These new Jeeps just don't take what the old ones did. They're building them for family cars now. You can't just fix a fender or panel puncture with a piece of sheet tin and pop rivets. And use a couple of 4 inch steam pipe for a bumper.

I had (wife unit) a 1500kg camping trailer fall off the back of a hyundai tucson once, within sight of home. Our safety system is thattrailers over a certain weight need an E brake, and there is a cable linked from the E brake handle to the tow vehicle. Its a sacrificial system, the cable breaks but it is good to know it works!

The awesome thing about the old cjs is all you need is a solid frame. everything else is replacable. In fact, AMC literally used whatever they could get to build them. I had an 85 CJ7 that had a Chevy straight 6 motor, Ford three speed automatic transmission and transfer case, Dodge 4wd axles and Wagner lockout hubs from the factory.

I briefly lived in FL and am reminded of a co-worker who built a swamp buggy I once rode on. A 2WD bare bones rig with tractor tires on the front and huge airplane tires in the back w/chains for traction. Built on an upside down (Model A?) frame with a monster Cadillac engine, no body, no undercarriage, two seats welded in place, and no brakes. Rested his bare feet on the bellhousing while we were tearing about. Good times. Could be something similar is in the making here? I ain't sayin', I'm just sayin'. And here's another shoutout to Al Gor-Rhythm. :)

When I was stationed in the Carribbean, one of the guys there had an old CJ-6 in really bad shape. A bunch of us decided we'd push it off a cliff into the ocean, but it really just rolled down the cliffside and landed nose-first on the small beach below.

Wow my Tahoe has tow hooks on the front! A CJ-7 fiberglass glass body is about $3K Well at least it's a better start than Troy's 2WD ! The key inside the glove box I believe Is a differential lock. Had a 75 Jeep Cherokee (2 door Wagoneer) that locked

It'd be really cool to see you restore the jeep. That being said, it's gonna be a lot of work, so it's up to you on whether or not you decide to do it. It definitely would make a cool video series watching you tear it apart and put it back together with new parts. But again, it's up to you on whether or not you want to dedicate the time and money to do it.

The chrome boat bar on the passenger side. It is commonly referred to as the “OH SHIT!!” For when things go sideways off roading. Between 2 brothers they had 5 of the CJ’s from 74 through 85.

You can call C&C equipment as they have new bodies in boxes for the jeep frame and alot of the other parts you will need. They will ship start to you from Indiana.

Thought a bit about how I wanted to respond to this one... here is what I came up with: Build the crap out of that little jeep. Recommend: LQ4, 4L80E, Atlas Trasfer Case, and a CJ-7 aluminum tub with your 1 ton axles... maybe get a manual trans, cause the kiddos need something to learn on In terms of gearing, I'd advise ~4.10:1 or so, cause strength. In terms of suspension... I'm leaving that to you, cause you cause how you use it dictates which suspension system works better... I'm a little envious of this project you have on your hands. Can't wait to see what you actually do with it.

There's not enough metal left in that to make a Miata...but like they say, if your going to build a Frankenjeep..,you got to start somewhere On the other hand...you can get CJ-7 parts just about anywhere, Dennis Collins in Texas has every new/ used body part and panel that you'd ever need.

Bestop, quadrattech, and a bit of research. You've got one of the last cj jeeps. Personally, I'd go for an aluminum tub before fiberglass. Did a low compression build 4.7l stroker kit and added turbo and holley efi. Felt like a stout small block and, if I can find his number in Montana, I'll dig up pics. Going to a small block would be fun with the 1 ton axles. Though I've seen some beefed up turbo i6 engines and a few 2.8l Cummins swaps. If you really get into trail run fun, you'll be in the minority with a diesel. That frame should be pretty strong. I remember older jeeps needing reinforced around the old steering box.

"That'll buff out!" 😂 But seriously, been there, done that (although sports cars, instead of Jeeps). Yes, it's doable. Older body-on-frame cars are a lot more "repairable" than modern unibody. Parts are widely available and not terribly expensive for Jeeps... unless you get into extreme modifications.

As much as I love Jeeps, especially CJ7s, I wouldn't bother with that one unless you absolutely WANT a full frame off, replace everything project. And if you do that, is it really the same Jeep?. For what that Jeep is going to need, you might as well get a Quadratec catalog, and start ordering everything. By the time you get everything off that frame, you might as well order a replacement frame, and parts and build one from scratch. If I HAD the time, tools, talent, and money to do this, I still wouldn't. I'd look for a Jeep that has more to work with. All that being said, if you do this project, I'll be here cheering you on!

Depends on what your goals are for this jeep. Looks like the only part that can be salvaged is the roof and the frame. If you just want to make it good enough to do off road things, and you do everything yourself, should be fine. But where will you draw the line? Full restoration including paint, or just enough to do offroad things (engine, transmission, brakes, differentials, transfer case, fuel system, suspension)?

So far, we're replacing the engine, tranny, axles, body tub, dash, hood, roll bar, door cards, doors, wiring. windshield, rear seat, tires, radiator and so on. So basically, we're taking that Jeep emblem and putting it on a whole new vehicle? - Good Luck, wife is a keeper if she goes along with this!

Ray, I love ya and want only the best for you. That said, the jeep is a money pit you don't want or need! Kids are growing, one of them will need a ride they want to be proud of one day soon and that would not be a rebuilt jeep! Put the money into a classic muscle car to pass along to the offspring. Something they will take care of and cherish because you built it.

I like the grinder as a cutter, being a paperboy in my youth - you flip over the joined ends and pull the tap and it will easily pull apart.

If you do decide to fix it, I recommend buying another already rebuilt '86 CJ 7 and putting it in place of that rust bucket...or sell a brand new vehicle for what restoring that will cost. On the other hand, you can build that with whatever parts you want & as powerful as you want it. If you want to spend that kind of money.

I think I'd find a 2.8 V6 Jeep for parts and build a 3.4 GM V6 for it. If it had a 4.0L then stroke it out to 4.7L but not east to do on a 4.2, different bore. But if it is a 4.2L, do NOT toss that crankshaft. Its worth $$$. It is the main item for stroking a 4.0L to 4.5/4.6/4.7. The 4.2 has a smaller bore but longer stroke than the 4.0L. So the longer stroke with the 4.0's bigger bore makes a 4.5L with stock pistons. Do a 0.030" over piston for a 4.6 and a 0.060" over piston for a 4.7. Then make kits to make a FIVE Liter too.

As someone who owns and has looked at a ton of cj7s let me say this. If it's an 86 it would have the most valuable rear axle dana 44 which is worth allot. The frame overall fast looking at it looked better than expected. Check where the leaf springs mount to the frame. Metal bodies are what everyone wants and hope to get. You can use allot or all YJ parts and keep the cj7 grill. I'm building mine with an lm7 and 4l60e but with a jeep transfercase and one Ton axles 14 bolt. Pay attention to case drop and what axle you select. That body is really rough I would just scrap it. Around the windshield and such looked really bad. Also that front plastic frame cover in front of the grill which says Jeep is MONEY. Look it up and see if yours is good.

As long as you frame is solid everything else is available. Steel or fiberglass tub and your set.

I think Wife-Unit didn’t think your fae “bought it” joke was so funny, and she made you buy it as punishment!! I think this is a perfect project for you to learn and practice some stuff, like welding with quality in mind, not just function. Maybe get a paint sprayer instead of just using rattle cans. Just something to think about.

There is very little on that CJ-7 that is worth saving, and a lot of it you are going to replace anyway. I would start off with a bare chassis and get a good used K2500 like you said and swap the drive train. You'll need custom driveshafts, but there are companies that specialize in that.
