Have you ever had a chance to listen to any of the McIntosh speakers? I've heard that their flagship speakers can produce things like gunshot sounds at realistic levels.
Yes at several HiFi stores. There are many speakers that can produce gunshots at realistic levels. JTR can easily do that and cost a fraction of the cost.
Youthman’s JTR 212s can do 134db - not that you’d really want them to - but it means that typical levels will have lifelike dynamics and very low distortion. Also, they can produce a step response (key for realistic percussive sounds) that is physically impossible for typical speakers with dome tweeters (far less output capability.)
I just looked up the top of the line Macintosh speaker. The max output is 90db. By comparison, 134db on JTR 212s means they have 25,000x more output capability. (SPL is logarithmic.) I’m sure the McIntosh speakers are exceptional, but it’s not the same class of output capability.
@@Geerladenlad no, they are point source, so the SPL will fall off faster than for a line source. That makes a bigger difference if some people sit close to the speaker, but not much difference with typical distances. In practice, due to the coax design and consistent off-axis response, you use the position and angle of JTR speakers to balance the SPL at each seat. Done well, in many cases you can exploit that to get more consistent SPL than for line source speakers.
Very true that once you reach a certain level with speakers, there's no place to go. The rest is acoustics and EQ. If you go somewhere and hear something better, you're just hearing better room and EQ.
