Great video. The description of how the shifting works and the reason for failure for not shifting is very clear. After collecting the needed tools, it took me only 2 minutes to correct the problem. Two suggestions though--before applying the big pliers but after loosening the nut, trying shifting then--mine fixed itself--just had to then tighten the nuts. Other suggestion--since becoming 80 and having arthritis, I have found that a large C-clamp is often easier to squeeze things rather than pliers. It is also great for clamping on the vertical side of the mower deck to stop mower blade turning when replacing old blades.
4:42 is a life saver! I bumped that spring clip for the forward/reverse lever and had no idea how to put it back on. You are a true legend RedneckComputerGeek!
Thanks, fella. Super clear, expertly descriptive, and you've helped me get another troubleshooting tip into the ol' toolbox. Sorry about the wasp stings; hope you get a sting-free year. Thanks for the helpful video.
Excellent. You could put a lock washer on it to help keep it in place. Also for anyone that has to open the transmission the MTD parts manual said the oil in it is 20-50w not grease. Other comments at other website say the oil turns to clay over time.
Great explanation. The plunger going into the transaxle was gummed up. Before adjusting as you suggested, I cleaned the area on the transaxle. Seemed to be all the gunk not letting shaft go all the way in for F. Thanks for showing me how to adjust. FNR.
I assume you figured that out by now, but in case you didn't take a close look at the frame near the very rear, behind the rear wheel to see if it's cracked. If it is, it will open up a gap in the frame when you shift mostly, and that causes the belt alignment to go wonky and jump the pulley. I hope you already figured that out, but even if you did maybe it will help someone else fix theirs.
Hello, I have a 1999/2000ish MTD Garden Tractor that the FNR shifter is between the seat and the dash with the 1-7 Shift On The Go shifter being on the left fender next to the seat. My issue is that the shifter will go into the forward gears and reverse with a normal feel when the engine is not running , But when the engine is running - Its like the clutch/ brake pedal is not engaging enough. Usually to get by with my mowing here lately, I shut down the engine if I am in a tight area, Shift the FNR shifter and start the engine backup for however many times required to get back to mowing again. The brakes do feel normal and do not appear to be sticking. In the past, I have had issues with the VariDrive Pulley pivot being not able to pivot like it should in which I would remove the cover and soak the pivot with penetrating oil like PB Blaster to loosen it up and after working the pivot several times then I would coat the pivot with SeaFoam DeepCreep which would work for quite some time. Being that my tractor is larger with 4 lug rear wheels instead of the snap ring type rear wheels, My tractor has all the same identical parts that most of the other MTD tractors have but laid out slightly different from what the diagrams usually show. My secondary drive belt is very easily changed compared to the smaller tractors, But the large VariDrive pulley is blocked in under the rear fender assembly of the tractor unless you drop the transaxle assembly. The tractor was gifted to me from a neighbor who was getting ready to move in which they thought that the steering was going bad on the tractor. After getting the tractor, I got the tractor running and took it for a spin and quickly determined that the front steering spindles had not been greased for a very long time and then serviced the tractor. The mower blades were ruined from someone who did not know how to sharpen blades, So I ordered a new set of blades. After a bit of TLC, The MTD is still being used. Just about all of the parts that I have ordered have MTD/Cub Cadet rather than the other names associated with MTD and being that I have a 107, 682 and 1710 Cub Cadets, I noticed that this tractor had more in common with the Cub Cadets with the exception of the Black and Gray Wheels. Thanks for your reply great videos.
This happened to me yesterday. I was mowing, mower came to a stop, won’t go into F or R. Also, I have to hold the key on and wiggle the pto engage handle to start the machine.
Hi thanks for the detailed information, as for allergic to bees I am , to stop the swelling I carry in my wallet Phenergan , I just take one it stops all swelling , Phenergan is an antihistamine , can get it at chemist , 30 mins after taking it you will want a little sleep
I realize this video is three years old but I have a Craftsman model 247.273300 T3000 built in 2018. It has the exact same shift mechanism set up. Mine will not go into reverse and the spring is still there? I'm being told to change the shifting fork inside the transmission. I would rather not have to tear the tranny apart if it's not needed.
Hey, I have a bit of a problem with this used lawn mower i bought. I can't shift between the gears while the engine is on. With the engine off it shifts perfectly fine, so i have no idea what is wrong with it. It is a Poulan Pro pp11536lmb. Any help would be appreciated.
Hiya RCG. Great info for trans adjustment. Any chance you know where the spring on that transaxle Rod selector goes. Its on the rod but nit sure which frame hole it goes too. I had to remove the body from and back to rewire the harness but saw the spring dangling and have no clue where it lands. Thanks for your time. Mark
My ride on mtd has the opposite problem, difficult to get into reverse, esp if one of the drive wheels is just slightly off the ground. I know that spring is gone and has been since b4 I got the mower, but I have been unable to locate a spring here in Australia.
I have a craftsman that you have to push the brake in order to shift gears but I'm having a problem shifting the gears. How can I get them to move smoothly?
Hey man, I have a 98 fnr shifter in the centre. Clutch just went to the floor and it took off in top without me changing. Gear shift is now light and not under tension and clutch is on the floor. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Cheers
I really need to know what the spring is that I need to keep it from flopping all around please. It will shift through F N and R so no worries there, it just flips around really bad.
Shot in the dark here, but would this also cause my FNR shifter to move, but not disengage out of forward? I have a Craftsman T110 (bought in Feb 2020). About a month ago, I ran over a stick(nothing crazy sized) but the mower stalled out. I've not been able to move or start it since. Shifter will move, but not the gear its self. Mower sounds like it wants to start but has no fuel. There is plenty. Never had an issue with it before now. Any suggestions??
my problem is i need to know how to adjust the speed control lever at the back.there a ferrul that connects to the idler bracket.I have a 2006 42 inch cut 13am762g752... be great to see video on aligning the idler bracket with the control rod.I really need help.I cant find any videos on this. thank you
I have a Huskee riding mower will not go in gears the transmission knob is in the middle like it's like a middle of your left and right legs like right there
I wish you would of showed the spring on the yard machine instead of the Troy-bilt so somebody would know what to look for when replacing the spring idmf it's completely missing. I have a yard machine identical to the one in the video and it has nothing close looking to the Troy-bilt spring setup.
Hi buddy, thank you for this excelent video. I have a MTD 38" same to yours, but I I need find the service and parts manuals for it. I ask you because I brougth it in used condition and the data plate is missing. Thank you
What if the shifter is under the steering wheel in the center of the machine (older model)? I can shift into all gears but it’s really really sticky. Doesn’t want to go easily.
Thank you for your content I've been a subscriber for about 4 years now.I'm having a similar issue with a mtd yard machine shift and go F.N.R. I checked all the belts they look fine and the transmission does fine in gears 5-7 but 1-4 it doesn't move at all. Will this adjustment work to get lower gears working? All the hardware you mentioned springs etc look to be intact.
In your case I would recheck the vary drive pulley and the belts. Once the belt loses any of its side wall you will have slipping in 1-3. Also check the adjustment on your clutch and be sure it is actually starting to make it grab in 1st.
@RedneckComputerGeek My issue is not this but after a deck rebuild I have no speed control but never unhooked anything in relation to speed control. Goes forward and backwards but stays at low speed unless u use ur heel to pull back on the clutch. Someone please help...I need to mow last week!!!
Wd 40 the variable pulley top and bottom groves where the belt goes and it will shift like a dream till it gets dirty or dry or you can use grease with a painters brush
lets see how much of a geek you are . i want to build a fast riding mower like the Honda mean machine except i want to use a BMW FLAT TWIN MOTOR .i figure if the can put them on motorcycles why not a riding mower . whatcha think about my idea ?
