Will the Toronto Maple Leafs TRADE Mitch Marner & BREAK UP The Core Four?

After another Disappointing loss in the playoffs which led to Sheldon Keefe being let go and Craig Berube brought in as the New coach this is just the beginning for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Big Changes are expected and is this the year they finally go in a different direction and add new pieces while breaking up the core four. We all know Auston Matthews and William Nylander are not going anywhere and John Tavares most likely will not waive his no move clause so that leaves Mitch Marner.
Mitch Marner who is set for another huge contract and more money against the cap is the name most likely to be moved and his name has been involved in some big nhl trade rumors and could fetch the leafs a nice return. With a new bench boss who doesn't take crap, he demands a certain level of play that is not suited for Marners play, but with them meeting face to face is this a good thing or bad thing for this relationship

True, but what message would that send to prospective UFAs in the future when considering signing with the Leafs? @@GospelTestimony

@@jma.87 Different manager. Treliving never signed that contract. Marner's agent played hardball and gave no flexibility. It's only taking him on the same ground. They've done it before under Burke and it didn't affect them. When Kaberle's agent pulled the same nonsense he told him that he'd be in the press box.

@@GospelTestimony Fair enough, and good points. I know Toronto is an attractive enough destination that maybe it just simply doesn't matter as much how players are treated in disputes than with other teams. I doubt it comes anywhere close to this senario, either way. If the team wants Marner to move, even if Mitch doesn't want to go, he'll waive with some control.
@jma.87
@jma.87 2 месяца назад
Marner and Tavares are UFA July 2025. Obviously the Leafs want flexibility for 24-25. However, I dont think a lot of teams would be interested in giving up assets for just one year of either player at their cap hit. At least not without a sign-and-trade extension, or giving up someone on their own roster they'd likely be losing via UFA in exchange. Doesn't matter how good these guys are, the cap hit and limited control negates a good bit of thier value to other teams.
@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN

I agree only way this gets done is if an agreement is in place for an extension and Marner is eligible July 1st so expect all of these rumors to pick up then

The Core 4 is definitely kaput. Brian Burke has spoken for years about Toronto's poor roster construction being top-heavy in the top six and lacking in the pipes and on the blue line. Marner and Tavares are both going into walk years so this band is going to break up like the Beatles with Berube playing the role of Yoko. What would make sense is flipping Mitch for a quality netminder. I know that Toronto in the recent past has wanted to upgrade in net being that the odd three man rotation of Samsonov, Woll, and Jones combined for 46 wins, a Goals Against of 3.01, and a Save Percentage of .898. Marner could bring back a goalie on the level of Juuse Saros or Jacob Markstrom although Markstrom does have a no movement clause. Moving Marners $11 mill would also create room to sign Domi and Bertuzzi, something the Leafs MUST do. I've heard rumors from the Island to that if Tavares would waive his no trade that a return to the Fishsticks would be welcomed by their fan base with open arms. Breaking up this group certainly creates many interseting posibilities for properly constucting this talented, but flawed roster. Good channel HSD.

The possibilities that trading Marner can open up for the Leafs would be good for them. Not only cap space, but they can bring back players they want to resign, address areas of need, possibly create cap space for free agency, and just break up that core 4 mindset and try to establish more of a team concept.
@CallittheBluesSection415

Exactly. As a Devil fan you know better than anybody, goaltending and defense never go out of style. If you don't have, you can't win it and the Leafs don't have it regardless of who's behind the bench.

I can definitely see why they should make some major changes because they continuously underachieve. I think they may have difficulty in moving him due to the high price tag. Will be interesting to see how it plays out 😊 LGD

Definitely keeping my eye on this, Marner may need a change of scenery at this point and his cap hit will be high, but some packages floating around make sense for the Leafs & those other teams mentioned.

Marner , much like Keefe, is the scapegoat for this past seasons failures. It's going to be hard to trade those terrible Dubas contracts. Toronto is going to have to pull some magic if they want to dish Marner.
@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN
@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN 2 месяца назад
Marner is the next Scapegoat after the Coaching and theres teams inquiring about him. I thought it would be impossible to move him, hes a consistent 90 plus pt player, if teams can't afford their own players and need offense can move them for Marner, but have to have cap space going forward

@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN Yep...well he was crying on the bench during the playoffs so... And Toronto is in a pickle. They need to move him and won't retain salary. I'm not sure what team is going to invest in bringing a guy at that price who isn't THE guy

It's time to stop talking about the "core 4". This is bratty childish behavior and not about the team and winning; when it's about how much money Marner wants just because Nylander is paid more than he is or vice versa, before Nylander signed his extension.

Just saying if you force Marner to waive his NMC it will make the Leafs a less desirable location for free agents. Also this is his contract end year and he will have a 100+ point season. Who is replacing this offence. Does Matthew want to drop to a "mere" 45-50 goals due to a lack of scoring support and a heavy play style?
@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN
@THEHOCKEYSKATEDOWN 2 месяца назад
I know I agree, and Domi faired well in his absence but is no Marner in terms of offense. Its a tough call, and I think Marner will have a huge year offensively. Its more money poured into offense that dries out come playoff time and if some of the packages being mentioned are on the right path it could help other areas and maybe dip into free agency as some more cap space will be available
@4.0.7.7
@4.0.7.7 2 месяца назад
You can’t force Marner out. He has to make the decision. So this idea that the Leafs will be a less desirable location holds no weight. The only way the Leafs can trade him is if MARNER lifts his NMC himself. The Leafs don’t have much sway except to explain to him the fans are demanding change and if it’s status quo it’s going to potentially get ugly. You can also tell him there’s no extension coming so if he wants a max 8 year deal elsewhere as opposed to 7 years he can make more money on his next deal if he takes a trade. It’s up to Mitch but I really think it’s time he moves on for his own sake. Yes it’s his contract year next year technically but he can get that contract starting on July 1st this year without having to prove anymore. His agent can squeeze the acquiring team for max dollar cause any team willing to shell out assets is likely willing to pay even more for his services. As for Matthews he’ll definitely see a dip in production but so be it. Not like his regular season scoring translates in the playoffs anyways. It’s much worse to run it back and tinker around the core again. It’s a waste of everyone’s time. We’ve seen enough.
