You really need another set of flip out fins mounted on the stop ring that unfold when they leave the barrel, like an RPG round. That would make the surface of stop ring much larger, so you won't keep firing all the way through the door. It would also help stabilize it in the air... also EPIC vid man. The power of that air cannon is awesome

This video deserves more views than it has. keep playing with the title/thumbnail (I've seen you change it a few times) to see if you can get the right combo. I like the current thumbnail but I've seen our videos do better with more realistic images (a screenshot of the slow mo before and after like at 15:20 or maybe the camera angle at 15:15 ), but you know your audience better. Maybe making the title a question like "Can you really pull a car door off like they do in movies?" (that could be improved upon lol) would make for a more intriguing concept and gets the idea of what you're testing across. Don't do anything that goes against what you know works for your channel though. If the most recent changes you've made are showing promising results disregard this comment lol

@haphazard1342
@haphazard1342 Год назад
It makes sense: car doors are designed to protect the occupants from side impacts, including vehicular impacts. It would be extremely dangerous for the occupants if the door separated from the unibody. In fact, the door when latched becomes a structural component of the chassis assembly. The latch and hinges prevent the door from being pushed too far into the cabin during a side impact, and also prevent the frame from separating (the door opening from spreading) during other impacts.
@NikitaOsito
@NikitaOsito Год назад
@@haphazard1342 The structural support of the door is most notable in convertibles, especially soft tops. With most of the strength of the frame being a flat box, door fitment can become a significant factor in reducing frame flex in corners. (Only really noticeable if it's awful, though.)
@gaberealking4103
@gaberealking4103 Год назад
I work in a vehicle assembly plant and you’d be surprised just how much thought and engineering is put behind the door’s points of contact with the rest of the vehicle. Luckily, I work on “door line” so I actually assembly the doors themselves. That bar that limits the door from opening too far (could also be called hyperextending) is called a “check link” and then you have your locking mechanism that interacts with the striker plater that’s bolted to the vehicle. A doors lock functions like a miniature Ferris wheel inside of the locks hollow housing. So instead of the lock being displaced by the striker plate and then going back into its original position (providing a restricting barrier that keeps the door from opening again) the lock actually has a second latch that just replaced the position of the initial one. Think of it as rotating into place. My assumption is that the original latch then goes into the housing and provides some sort of opposing force inside the houses where it latches into its own piece. Take all of this with a grain of salt (or many many grains) because I want taught any of this. I just learned it from assembly the doors. I don’t know what any of the lock housing looks like on the inside. I just now how it functions because we have to do a lock function check before the door is put onto the vehicle. There will probably be a large amount of typos, and idek if there’s a character limit to YT comments

@ncrshane1919
@ncrshane1919 Год назад
The doors on most vehicles are actually a critical part of the structure. If you remove the doors the overall strength of the passenger compartment gets seriously compromised. That's why you have a structural brace that runs from the hinge side to the latch, and you can see that is what stopped the harpoon at 7:51. Because the doors act like gussets and are what help keep the passenger compartment rigid in a crash/rollover, they are deceptively strong so long as they are closed and latched.
@haph2087
@haph2087 Год назад
I’d recommend using fins that flip out, basically backwards versions of the harpoon hooks, kinda like a sabot tank round’s stabilization fins. They will also double to help stop the harpoon when it hits the door.

Or that splicing rope with what looked like a purpose built needle, we used to splice large rope but we had to jury rig a threader and had to guide it through with a smaller rope which was threaded with a smaller needle made of wire.

Instead of a dyneema rope, I'd recommend trying a braided steel cable. It should have significantly higher abrasion resistance and tensile strength, with a smaller cross-sectional area, so should be much less affected by the air evacuating the cannon.
@G1McK
@G1McK Год назад
The problem he's facing is the harpoon stop plate is not allowing any air past the harpoon, so the harpoon catches up to the rope inside the barrel. With steel cable as it's very soft compared to the harpoon, it would twist and bend around the harpoon and end up blocking it inside the barrel. The way to fix it is have the harpoon sticking out of the barrel.

Wow - this was so much fun to watch, it must have been epic to do this in person. I loved seeing it punch clean through. I second other comments saying to try this with a steel cable. I really want to see what happens with a cable/rope attached. Perhaps a combination, cable to exit the barrel, then a rope behind that? Or, you may need to have some tension on the rope/cable before firing to keep it out of the way of the harpoon. Also, that target car looked to be in pretty good shape - but seeing you tow it into place makes me think the engine/transmission or both are dead.
@DrakeKillah
@DrakeKillah Год назад
Something that hit me at the end, when you pointed out that you need a long barrel, is the fact that you made it so your harpoon had to be contained within the barrel. If you add a shaft at the back of the harpoon, you can fit it to a smaller, shorter barrel. It would work like a rifle grenade. It might also affect the issue you were having with the rope getting tangled, although I suspect it won't eliminate it.
@joshbryan8028

rope probably needs to be inside the barrel coiled up behind the projectile. Also, you could probably get a decent flip-open motion with the hooks using some strong magnets mounted at the base of the fins. Also I think the stretchy snatch strap is actually counter-productive for safety in this case - given the hook is the most likely thing to fail, and not the rope, I think you're mostly risking turning the hook into a helluva projectile with a massive slingshot yeeting it yonder.
@G1McK
@G1McK Год назад
Tyler, the issue you're facing with the rope inside the barrel is the rope has nothing pulling it out of the barrel, so it tangles and disrupts the smooth flow of the harpoon inside the barrel. Most harpoons combat this by having the harpoon sticking out of the barrel and attaching the rope to the end that sticks out. They also use a long loop along the shaft of the barrel so that the harpoon fires normally, and as it fully exits the barrel the loop ends and pulls the rope with it. Another solution is using a hook on your stop plate to catch the rope, or perhaps a large washer type construction that the harpoon claws fit through but the stop plate catches it as it passes. Ropes attached each side to balance pulling load as a central pull would be impossible on a device with a large hole in the middle!

i would make a tension system for the harpoon that has a cord on it that would keep tension on the cord but gradually release the tension as it flies through the air keeping it semi straight through flight the harpoon would have an automatic release system that opens very large prongs once it goes through the door the base of the harpoon where the cord is attached should have a large flat plate so it doesn't shoot through the whole car

Thread the rope through a piece of metal tubing (cut to the length of the barrel and flared out and smoothed on both ends). Hopefully that will keep the rope from entangling with the harpoon, and upon leaving the barrel flip back with the rope to a trailing position. The lighter mass of the tubing the less the disruption of the harpoons flight... possibly aluminum, or titanium if you've got the money. Either that or maybe a steel cable leader long enough to keep the rope out of the barrel altogether.
