Hi I'm Brian with Next Level Homestead. If this is your first time here... welcome! I'm glad you're here! If you're a longtime friend, welcome back!!
For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!
(The link above is an affiliate link. If you purchase through our links we'll receive a small commission that helps support our channel, but the price remains the same, or better for you!)

I have 2 pregnant cows as well as a (steer) calf and just sold my bull calf on Wednesday. I've been raising cows for years and about every two years we do send one of the calves to the processor aka "freezer camp". Even after several years of raising cows I still am a little sad each time we take one to the processor. However, as stated in the video, I Know where my meat came from, I know how it was raised, I know it wasn't pumped full of chemicals or growth hormones, etc and that it was loved and taken great care of. It lives a great life here on the farm and only has One bad day. I think Daisy is going to bring you all great joy and the side benefit is all the dairy you will have on hand.

Having grown up on a farm, this isn’t even a question! My dad taught me to wring a chicken neck when I was 7! If I was horrified, I don’t remember it. And because of him, I was one of the first FFA(future farmers of America) females to win best meat cattle judging in my state!

I spent my childhood on a farm too! I think knowing how your food animals lived and being as kind to them as possible before they become food and respecting their contribution because we do have to eat is a much better way than the horrible way factory farms treat their animals.

Y'all should so get a nubian goat to be a companion. As far as goats go, they have the richest milk that is often used for making cheese. They are also a smaller breed of goat. Not as small as a Nigerian dwarf, but close.

In my state you can't become a seller, but sometimes the breeder will take a healthy calf back for future use. Not something you can plan on, however. hmmmm, just realized I think you can sell a small number without having to be a "breeder/seller". One a year shouldn't be too many, but I don't know and too tired to google it.

This has been an amazing video. I honestly thought that you only had to breed her once to get milk and as long as she got milked daily, she would keep up production. I had no idea that she had to be bred yearly to keep up the milk. I'm glad Daisy is eating all kinds of hay now. You always seem to put so much thought into your decisions, and that is really smart of you. Merry Christmas! Go at your own pace! Edited to add: any merch you get for the Garden Channel could also be put on this channel. Maybe have a contest for artwork?

Merry Christmas. I just have to saw I am so impressed that you know so much about Bella and her care. I was under the impression that you didn’t know anything. Which had me worried. FYI oat hay is oats cut at ground level. Keeping the oats ( grain) on the stock. Which if they had harvested the oats then the stocks the stocks would be called straw. You two really do have it together congratulations. Something to think about is if she has a heifer your breader may offer to buy her when she is weaned. 👍

I grew up on a farm with about 20 dairy cows. We used a milk machine but after removing the machine and moving it to the next cow, we hand milked each cow to encourage greater milk production. I learned how to milk a cow by hand by age 7. I enjoyed it and it was easy to learn. Then I was able to help my dad with the milking 😊 I also milked cows completely by hand when I was about 10 . It was fun and not too time consuming. My dad appreciated me shortening the time needed to finishing chores. I really enjoyed it.😊

I used to use pears to deworm my daughters horses. They loved them because they didn't get them as often as apples and it worked sooo well. Of course, commercial dewormers are recommended as well and now that her herd has grown to 4 full size horses and 4 minis, we're more apt to use the commercial dewormer just to keep everyone clean.

Just found your channel. You are absolutely right about the total control BIG SEED are having on our food. GM foods with no seeds and or no taste. Poisons and packaging just over the top. I have been gardening and producing food for my family since I was 14. I am now 64. So 50 yrs later I am still learning new things every day. Particularly since I have relocated throughout my time from subtropical to cold temperate and now hot temperate. This of course has thrown up a thousand different challenges. While it is the challenge that keeps many gardeners so engaged, finding information has historically taken a long time and often many costly mistakes are made before success. What difference RU-vid and people like yourself are making to our world. Free content, free advice, from all the different environments and cultures of the world. Living Tradition Homestead on RU-vid just went over buying a new milking machine. She did milk by hand but carpal tunnel demanded a machine. If you get a goat you can have a companion for Daisy and also goat milk lol. We got a steer when I was about nine and I fed it his bottle until he was old enough for hay. When they had him slaughtered I refused to eat any beef lol. I’m over that by now but it was funny at the time. Have a blessed Christmas.

Loved the video. It was nice seeing Emilie in it with you. I was thinking Daisy was more expensive than that. My children showed sheep at the fair,😊 they are a very good herd animal, they do better when they have company. Never did get used to the flavor of sheep, but better home raised. We had to make the decision of putting our lamb in the freezer also it was hard but we did it. I'm not sure how long I've been watching your homesteading adventure but I know you were in your other home. Makes me want to extend my homesteading to more than just chickens and gardening. Well Merry Christmas and Happy New Year can't wait to see you next year 😊

I grew up on a farm and milked cows with my mom every day. I'm glad you will be milkling by hand. It is easy once you get the hang of it and a rhythm going.

Hand milking is pretty easy once you get the finger 'piano' rhythm. If you don't have cats around, you may find that they start showing up.

LGD's are typically a deterrant to predation in all but the really wild and large areas. Which is not to say they never fight off wolves, coyotes, lions, bears etc. They can and do, especially in large herds/flocks where there are two or more dogs. Hobby farms and small acreages usually suffice with LGD's as the thing that keeps predators from getting close. I've had many. many lgds over decades and never had anything bigger than a raccoon even get close/

We had Nigerian Dwarf goats. They would be a wonderful companion, are the size of your dog and have a high butter fat content. The milk is very sweet and makes amazing cheese. They would be my go to milk animal for many reasons.

I'm guessing you will get her a goat. They are useful for brush hogging and very entertaining. A goose would also be a good choice. They are great guard "dogs" for herd animals. ETA: I grew up on a homestead. Absolutely it matters how your meat is raised, and it will show in the flavor and quality. I always chuckle when city folk are squeamish about the end process. It's scary how many kids these days think grocery stores "make" meat. I am proud of you, Brian, for thinking about this ahead of time. If it feels weird to eat something you raised, start by trading with another homesteader.
