Mike Willesee interviews Boy George for the Australian current affairs show "Willesee". Interviewed in 1984 before Culture Club toured Australia that year. From the Lex Watson archive.
His intelligence, grace and maturity far surpasses his mere 22 years of age. If only the youth of today had even 1/3 of his attributes, our society would be in a much better place right now.
Amazing how smart & well spoken he was at the age of 22. He was really ahead of his time & very brave. I'm sure some record exec tried to convince him to change his image. Good for him to stand his ground.
Wow. At about 6:50, he really got George agitated. You can see his eyes burn right through him at the implication that Culture Club's success had nothing to do with the music. He handled that ignorance brilliantly and backed it up with facts. Boy never ceases to amaze. Sometimes I wonder how he had the balls to stay truly himself throughout obviously biased judgments like this interview! Inspiring doesn't even begin to cut it. Because of him, I can be a hippie in fringes one day and a leather-clad goth chick the next. Thank you, George, for the courage to be myself. :)
razzyjazzy Yeah. The interviewer was so rude. You can see Boy George raise his eyebrows when the guy asked him the question. I agree with your comment.
wow! he's so normal. He's clearly confident, without arrogance. He's intelligent, and seems to face the same issues and concerns as every musician ever interviewed. His speaking voice goies further to identify how he views himself, even than his appearance, but i like the picture it creates as a whole. he really is doing his own thing! how admirable that he wont be domineered or intimidated into conforming the the status quo. good for you, what ingenuity at this time in history, when cross-gender ideas were were unpopular and non-existent to the secular pop audience. Bravo! i was happy to be so surprised and impressed!
@@MiaPaboplanesSantos if you see how down the toi*et homophobic axl rose has gone....he looks ugly and feminine today. George, on the contrary, looks a lot better despite his past with drugs
Wow! George never ceases to amaze me just how polite a person can be, and how much grace can be shown to the rudest of reporters like that man was. I have great respect for George. He never faltered for a minute, but held his own in a calm respectable way. Seems like some reporters try to tear him down, but the end result is that he makes them look stupid. Good on ya George. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Wow that was back in 1984 and the question was "Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?" We're now in 2015 and look at him now - he's been there done that, experienced life and now he's back in the spotlight more healthier than ever and sounds a trillion times better.
He had to explain himself in every single interview and it’s ridiculous. Same questions over and over again. Joan Rivers was the only one who gave him true respect.
What a horrible reporter, BG showed more ethic, intelligence and respect than the reporter would ever had! Hence on it, BG and culture club is a worldwide name and group, this reporter is no-one 🤣 I'm the same age as BG and so proud of him for creating diversity and inclusion in a diplomatic and respectful manner, the 80's era was the best 👌
The interviewer made himself look far worse than he ever could have made George look. Boy George comes out on top both with this interview as well as with Letterman. And they know he outclassed them.
It's truly a no wonder why Culture Club became so relevant like Boy George is really doing his thing every interview I seen him do he knows how to handle himself he knows how to deflect he knows how to come out on top when they try to throw him some dumb question or try to put shame on him because of what he look like then at the fact that the band everybody gets the same money even even more plus like you heard him he's not going out to buy a fancy sports car soon as he gets his check smart that's why he still got money now
The interviewer starts his piece by saying he hopes BG won't be as sucessful as the Beatles... I wonder how that would go nowadays... The guy would be cancelled in no time at all. Good on George for keeping his cool. It's something he always did when confronted by journalists.
My idol!! Really,i need to thank my dad for showing me Culture Club when i was a child,he is a huge fan of them and mainly Boy George. I remember he listening to Karma Chameleon in the car and i put on repeat a lot of times
Oh my goodness you said it all. My mom was an original fan in the 80s and played them a lot when I was a baby. I'm so glad she did! Now every Club song just feels so close to home in a very comforting way. These guys (and their fans) rock!
Its quite funny now, Ive watched about 5 different interviews today, and in EVERY interview, the journalist feels the need to take these underhanded little jabs at George. Its like they are so disgusted in what he may represent for future generations, that they feel the need to almost mock his existence with petty remarks. But George has been nothing but professional in every single interview. You cam jist see tje smirks on their faces.
You could just feel all the disdain coming from the interviewer. “ do you think you are damaging young children in America??? “ And then every time the camera flashed on him he had this look of fear and stupidity. And then when Boy George make that crack about balls lolz 😆 “. I’ve got better things to do with my balls.” lol!! And the look on the guys face, omg 😆 you could tell he detested BG, but f**k him!! I am so glad Boy George stands his grounds and won’t compromise his principles. He still an incredible icon, and that news caster has thankfully gone away into obscurity!!
Wow, that Mike Willesee is a nasty man. His condescending tone is so unnecessary. Boy is so eloquent and ready for his nasty attitude, love you Boy. Your creativity and talent always made me smile and dance hardcore.
I love his style and tbh I love his hair and I want it haha I think I might go for the hair he had in "do you really want to hurt me", but I'm not sure now! I really like this interview, but I feel the interviewer lacked a sense of humour and should have asked more questions about his music. Boy George always answers well though, never losing his temper. He seems so nice and genuine. A true role model. I know he took heroin later on but he seems so genuinely charming. Great voice too. Can look up to this man- very wise. And true talent. His music has lasted the test of time too. 15 and loving it. A lot could pass as new I think.
He said do you think you will still make it if it wasn't for your looks like would you still sell and he had a great rebuttal great we had no video and the song still hit number 2 on the top 10 in the US and then have five to six more hits the person who's doing the interview does not like Boy George at all it was Georgia's just dodging and weaving my mom like his music not bad he got my respect
He was very good at his age to Handel this guy he even smiled at the end I’m sure some of the questions bothered him but it doesn’t show this interviews just has a smerk on his face like what a fool I’m talking too
I love boy george! What an incredible intelligent answers!! The interviewer was just shooting out questions without even interacting!! so why are you asking them for?? don't you have a follow up questions?? not to mention he didn't even got the humour and smarts in George's answers.. what a waste!!
I wonder if this interview would be sexual harassment, invasion of privacy and defamation in this day and age. I feel so sorry for George. How could he do something so harassing to such a lovely guy?
I think he talked a bit too much here- It felt like the interviewer had him on the run... Can you kick a ball?... what a stupid Question George ‘s comeback was funny AF! But seemed like thinly veiled anger. Can’t say I blame him- F’d up question, stupid and has nothing to do with anything..
sbecktacular I think "too much" is a broad term. When exactly did George cross the limit? Also hes very outspoken on just about all his interviews ..check out the other ones lol
Got to Love Boy George for his talent, intelligence and honesty. Fun Fact: Emanuel Swedenborg was actually born in Sweden. Download his latest book “Heaven & Hell” for free at swedenborg.com. You no it makes NO cents.
Joan Rivers loved a Boy George now that's a nice interview. This guy not so much. I can read his face. I can tell he doesn't like Boy George and Boy George knows that he doesn't appreciate his look. I don't know there's just something about this interview that bothers me.
Steven Morris I agree when I first saw this interview didn't like the guy doing the interview his facial expressions as if he wanted to get under Boy George's skin or belittle him..
Marilyn had a similar look and either copied Boy George or just had the door opened by him depending on who you talk to. Then we had Divine who was an actual drag queen!
