“You’d have five years where a government could do more or less anything they like without much exposure or questioning."

I'm sure Hague wouldn't have complained about a Tory supermajority in 2001 or any election since. I can't remember him urging Tory voters when he was 16 at the party conference not to vote for Thatcher and give her an undemocratic supermajority! He's just papping his pants about the Tories eventually (hopefully) getting electoral justice from the people.

Yeh this new tory line is embarrasing. Any decent majority allows you to effectively do what you want this is no different. How is the prospect of a Labour majority any different to a crackpot Tory majority in 2019. It isn't, only this goverment was so terrible they couldn't even use that to their advantage which tells you all you need to know about their credentials. It will be day to remember if it is an extinction as it will have been entirely self inflicted. Good riddance. All of this "socialist" fear mongering is just a repeat of the same attacks against Corbyn but they have zero relevance to Starmer.

Hague has joined the Gaslighters Club. The Tories had an 80-seat majority, which meant they never lost a vote. It makes no difference whether the majority is 20 or two hundred from the point of view of the opposition. The only way the government will lose a vote is if some of their own MPs rebel. It looks as though the Labour Party will have to form the opposition as well as the government. If the polls are right, they'll need to use some of the opposition benches anyway; there won't be enough room on the government side.

The economy was growing at 3% per annum when they left office, borrowing had under undershot forecasts, they’d kept the worst effects of the financial crisis away from High Streets and peoples homes. National debt one ONE THIRD of what it is now and we went into the financial crisis with a lower debt to GDP than Germany, France, the US. If you want to blame someone for the financial crisis start with Rishi Sunak who was part of the hedge fund who forced the sale of ABN-Amro to RBS resulting in its collapse and a £70 billion taxpayer bailout, Rishi made his millions though and took himself off to California afterwards.

Let's assume for a moment that Hague is right (i.e. a huge labour majority is bad for democracy), let's be clear, 14 years of increasing Tory government chaos created this situation. It's simple cause and effect. I'm not convinced it'll definitely lead to huge problems, but if it does, the Tories but own the fact that they set the stage for this to happen, through disgraceful levels of corruption and incompetence. They won't take responsibility for anything though, hence why even longstanding Tory voters don't trust the party anymore. You reap what you sow.

Maybe a big majority where Labour "can do whatever they like" is not the worst thing... The problem w/ Blair in 1997 was that he didn't do anything with the freedom it gave him, to make transformational change. As Roy Jenkins said: "Majorities are for spending." The freedom to do what is unpopular is the only way to do this. (Since 2010, no govt has had the opportunity.). Instead, Blair just polished his majority for 2001. So I hope Starmer doesn't do that. Don't go nuts. But use the political capital you have to fix the long-term.
