Rossini's Willliam Tell overture played by The Grimethorpe Colliery Band from the movie "Brassed Off". See also • Brassed Off - Danny Bo... from this movie.
Brings a tear to the eye when I hear this scene. My dad and grandad spent all their life working at Grimethorpe Colliery. They were proud of the band and rightly so.
My Dad and Grandad too 😉😉 miners Grandad plays several brass instruments and is the Conductor too. My Dad plays this every Sunday when I'm little. Sunday is classical music day from 7am! till after Sunday dinner, then it's telly. It makes me smile x
the only thing i know is i never had a dad from the age of 17 because my dad was a miner and died of lung disease and this film brings a tear to my eye ever time i watch it RIP dad and all the miners that went before and after him
Love this film, seen it dozens of times. Just noticed 1.50 mins quick crowd shot. The look on Sandra's face (phils wife) is perfect, conveys pride, awe and a genuine realisation of what the band meant to Phil. Melanie Hill is a brilliant actress .
Let's stop and honor and appreciate this masterpiece and beautiful piece of music the musicians deserve a lot of credit of playing the William tell overture c look classic music at its very best one of the best and favorite ever god bless you guys thanks you guys rock still going strong way to go ! Joe
Brought up on big bands, brass bands, jazz bands and classical. My brother won a competition in his band, the floral dance was one of the pieces and I will never forget the day they won he played the cornet. Reminds me of this. This film is just unbelievable.
Very spirited. I have always enjoyed Rossini's William Tell overture. This is a tribute to the incredible musicianship that is found in the British Brass Orchestras.
It's hard to impress a jaded musician with this old warhorse, but damn! The performance is perfect, the arrangement is brilliant, it sounds like it was always a brass band piece, especially the cornet solo.
Indeed! Best George Merry ever, Brother Gilbert, Theseus' dad, with one of the most beloved adventure toons (remember those Saturday mornings, you know you do)...
Absolutely brilliant. One of the--if not THE--best version of this song I have ever heard. And I would pay big bucks to just watch a conductor like that. Outstanding movie and a wonderful performance.
I love how this sounds without a string section, so bold, crisp and clear. The cornet solo is exquisite too. Since I first saw the movie when it was released on video, it gave me a renewed interest in all brass bands. The movie itself is a great tribute to all the union workers getting screwed by ruthless companies.
its shows how maggie treated the miners , yes we accepted tat coal as a power enerator ad to o but it sould have been phased out as other employment was built up for the men to go to and not hhave the comunities split
The musicians deserve a lot of credit just a real masterpiece of live music everyone knows from the lone ranger outstanding and excellent performance job well done you should be amazed and proud love and appreciate you guys thanks you guys rock way to go ! Joe
Captured the attitude of every euphonium player with that quote! I am one myself and i can’t tell you how annoying it gets when everyone calls us a baby tuba or heaven forbid a baritone. Not sure which one is more insulting! 🤣
I am absolutely taken with this music, and especially the film, as it portrays the hard times of our miners in those days, and of course the good brass band music.
Taken by itself, simply as a random performance it is magnificent. I agree with your post completely. It is absolutely my favorite performance of this piece and this is one of my favorite pieces. But then when you factor in the story line of this movie and what this performance in this particular scene represents for the characters and the people and story the movie is based on and all the emotions that go with it, it becomes transcendent almost on the level of a religious experience. It transports you right there and makes you feel like you are actually part of the story feeling what the characters are feeling. It sounds cliché and people say things like that about movies all the time but in this case it is true. This movie gets a rare 5 stars from me and much of that is due to the music and in particular this performance. I only regret I wasn't there when they recorded it.
From the lone ranger a real masterpiece of music the musicians deserve a lot of let's stop and honor and appreciate this moment they can do my job and I can't do there job god bless you guys thanks you guys rock one of the best and favorite pieces of music ever ! Joe
R I P Pete Postlethwaite 😭He Did well in this and Well up when I watch him in this Great movie, Especially the Cast who Performed Brilliantly in this 😍
Que maravilla de película. Dura y a la vez tierna. Ese orgullo de clase, de ser minero y músico. Un duro alegato a los terribles años de Thatcher y a la vez un canto a la amistad, el compañerismo y el amor a la música.
Movie Trivia: Commonly understood to be based on Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the fictional pit village of Grimley is actually an amalgamation of two neighboring South Yorkshire pit villages: Grimethorpe and Frickley. Both have internationally known brass bands. Frickley pit closed in 1993, a year after Grimethorpe. Unlike the other actors in the movie, Ewan McGregor knows how to play an instrument. He played the French horn when he was younger, which is an instrument with similar pitch to the Eb tenor horn his character plays in the movie ~ IMDb
Sadly the demise of the miners and the mining communities (Grimethorpe, Desford), the demise of the car industry (Fairey,Foden) has nearly seen the demise of this wonderful UK Music!
I was born in Wakefield and grew up in Altofts. My dad worked at West Riding Colliery. All the scenes in the film are so familiar. I live in Dorset now but my heart is still back home.
After Brassed Off was filmed most of the stars and crew still get together for a reunion.Grimethorpe still remains one of the poorest towns/village in Europe my town of Wombwell is not far behind unfortunately.
I watched the Grimethorpe Colliery Band in Grimsby the other weekend. Excellent stuff, the Willliam Tell Overture was played as the encore... I can honestly say that the lead cornet player's (who played the middle bit) head was a bit redder than the bloke above! Go see em, you'll love them! ;) Dabz
@baddogmiles And this guy (Shaun Randall) use to be my Brass Tutor when i was at primary school! What an inspiration! If only i was old enough at the time to realise it!!!
I had to do a little research to understand what was happening here, but it was well worth the time spent. I must find this movie to fully appreciate what was happening here.
@LINDA230651 Most older band music has both cornet and trumpet parts. The cylindrical bore of the cornet lends are warming sound to the instrument making it more suitable for melodic work whereas the trumpet is usually utilized in punchy passages and occasionally for more dramatic passages.
Sorry the cornet is conical, slow taper allows for smoother transition to the ambient air from the mouthpiece & valve train. Similar to a tuba and euphonium. The trumpet has the cylinder shape. Does not taper until it must, much closer to the bell causing the punchy tone you noted. Same as trombone. The conical cornet shape results is a lower acoustic standing waves similar to VSWR in radio antenna design. Just my opinion and just like bellybuttons everybody got. ‘Em.
