Mate, your channel is amazing. Came across it a few days ago and cannot stop watching. Your knowledge is incredible but I particularly appreciate your willingness to say “I dont know” when faced with a confounding design element - it gives you a very respectable air of legitimacy to be so honest. Your videos on suspension setups are also incredible and very understandable for those without a technical background. Keep it up!!

Nothing about the potential blown through upper section of the sidepods? Looks like they're maybe not using the air for cooling and passing it straight through and out of louvres from the upper portion of the sidepods in order to keep the airflow attached down the sharp ramping of the sidepods

This is exactly what popped into my mind when I saw it. Absolutely genius if that’s the case.
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 2 года назад
If that were true, it would likely be in violation of 3.7.6, which covers apertures. A bypass exit in the region you propose would not be 'for the sole purpose of allowing cooling exits', so the only way they could do it would be to pipe it through something that needs cooling. I wouldn't be prepared to look into the legality of that any more until we have some shots from the rear confirming it is true and not just speculation. Hope that explains it!

@@KYLEENGINEERS there are some other angles on f1technical and some twitter profiles that I won't link to without your permission. It's nothing concrete and I respect that you wouldn't mislead people watching your videos, but I appreciate your extremely qualified opinion on this topic nonetheless there are some still frames towards the end of the following youtube video that might convince you a little more? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RSkvJPZRnh0.html If you look at the brightened photo of the williams front view you can essentially see daylight through the sidepod with what looks like an opening shape that matches up fairly well with the "outlet" AKA dark undefined area on that low definition video that can "potentially" be seen in the video I linked. at 0:58 you can seee the same dark "Outlet" on the right sidepod, so it seems its visually similar on both sides It's all conjecture but I like speculation of this nature

Would be awesome to hear more about your f1 life. For example, how many people on the team usually read the whole rulebook? Does the team print them out for everyone at the beginning of the season? How did the CFD limits impact your job? Did you have to log time on an honor system or was CFD work submitted to the FIA? What about winter break. If you got an idea for a concept on your break could you whip out the laptop and do a quick 1d study to see if the concept was viable or to test a theory? How might teams "cheat the system". What's a typical timeline for design cycles? Did you work on 2021's car before you left? Did they keep stuff away from you after you put in your notice. How many people were " technical experts" versus motorsports fans. For example someone might be the best in the world at FEA and just view it as a job they could care less about where someone else might be not quite as good but live and breath f1. I could continue... haha

You're simply the *best* aerodynamicist on TY when it comes to explaining what you believe an F1 teams aero is doing. Unlike other so called aerodynamicists on YT that say silly things like "that a team has got it wrong and they should have done it like" this just from looking at photos 😲. You actually take the time to 1. Read and understand the current F1 aero regulations (legality boxes etc) and 2. You have said in previous videos you might not fully understand how a team is getting away with something, but you are just one guy and they have a whole team of aerodynamicists working on a solution, so I have absolutely nothing but 100% respect for your views. Other so called TY aerodynamicists that work for certain well known TY Auto or F1 channels that get lots of views and they just say that teams are doing their designs wrong (without seeing any airflow analysis) and not even going as far as you do in your F1 car aerodynamics analysis should really be ashamed of themselves. All those guys should actually watch your videos as they *would* learn a thing of two. Okay your advantage is that you not only worked for the current F1 champions in the last era of F1 car designs, but you also fully understand the in and out of the current F1 aerodynamic regulations and you actually try to understand why each team are doing what they are doing 👍. BTW Brackley is a nice place to live with plenty of walks and surrounding areas, it's a shame that both your wife and yourself didn't like the area 😢. Oh well each to their own and you're 100% happier now and that's all that really matter. The weather is rubbish compared to Australia though lol 🤣🤣🤣 Great channel and videos, keep it up 👍👍👍

Have a look at scarbs he thinks there is a slit in the top of the side pod fed from the top slot of the side inlet to create a downwash on the steep side pod hence no rear shots of the illusive slit but you can make out a really large bump at the front of the side pod that then drops suddenly from that front 3 quarter ish veiw

Another great video. I have a question. The side pods look quite radical packed up front and than very tight going back. Would Merc not gain some knowledge from this since they are supplying the engines and would Merc not have to change the cooling packing or would Williams change that? The Williams looks so clean and sleek, I hope that is winning combo.

For a design which was supposed to get rid of vortice there seems to be a lot of vortex generators on these new cars.
@ayrendraganas8686
@ayrendraganas8686 2 года назад
with a lot of the downforce being generated by the floor the cars are a lot less sensitive to the backwash in general. In addition to that the stricter geometry does limit the overall scale of those vorticies

i wonder if the sidepod opening is huge because they're using inner tunnels to channel air to the rear beam wing?
@andrewbailey7999
@andrewbailey7999 2 года назад
Saw an interesting tweet from Craig Scarborough suggesting that the top half of the giant sidepod inlets might've been bypassing the radiators altogether, and channeling the airflow through louvres to provide downwash over the top of the very aggressively downward-sweeping sidepods. Do you think that suggestion holds any water? Obviously we don't have any rear views to confirm this properly

Looks like they have very little room for cooling air outlet at the back of the coke-bottle, it's very slim between the rear wheels. And with no pics from the back, I guess they are hiding outlets on the back/top of the seemingly very short and forward placed sidepods. Maybe a kind of through-flow sidepod design? Could explain the large inlets.

You should still be working in f1 with this much knowledge. You will definitely be worth as much as Adrian Newey
@tuck1726
@tuck1726 2 года назад
Not to be rude by Kyle is essentially giving the baseline knowledge of f1 aerodynamicist. Obviously the teams have implemented these things. Once something is invented it’s much easier to look at it and see what it does than to invent it. Adrian Newey is one of the greatest race car engineers of all time. I don’t mean anything against Kyle. I’m sure he could likely innovate too. However, we haven’t seen it on his channel and certainly not to the level of Adrian Newey. The viewers don’t demand he makes videos on his innovations. They want videos on f1 cars they’ll see on track so that’s what Kyle puts out. Furthermore, Kyle knows some about vehicle dynamics, kinematics and tires but he is not on the level to be on an f1 team in those fields. I study those things daily and have been since I was 13(now 28). So I see some gaps but his knowledge is still really good. Kyle is an expert in fluid dynamics and that’s what he mainly sticks to. He doesn’t claim to be an expert in anything else. Adrian Newey knows it all not just fluid dynamics. He nows the material science involved, thermal dynamics, how to optimize engine/downforce/packaging trade offs, how to package complex suspension geometries, how to use suspension geometries to create correct aero platform and he learns stuff new to the entire industry. Kyle could possibly be one of the better f1 aerodynamicist, but comparing him to Andrian Newey is going way too far. I doubt Kyle even wants that comparison. Likely Kyle left f1 so he could make his own aero designs. That’s his passion. Just like the passionate really good software engineers go to startups or start their own so they can build their own software. I imagine if he saw himself being the chief technical director one day he would have stayed. The competition at that level is crazy even for a back marker team.

I'm sure Kyle is subject to a confidentiality NDA from Merc for at least the next 20 years. Whatever he's designed successfully he's hardly going to reveal here. He's a young man thats self made, he's a PHD, he's worked at Merc for three years. He has nothing to prove to anyone I'd wager..
