Win Percy narrates his 14 laps in the Sussex Trophy at Goodwood, 2002, in the Mike Hawthorn chassis 1955 Jaguar D-Type. This is a great video, all credit to the original producers.

That was some serious wheel work there and a great race. Cars over 60 years old and doing 150 MPH, and sliding through every corner. Just brilliant to watch, the sounds were glorious and Win was perfect with his commentary.

Exciting! It reminds me of my one lap at Le Mans in a VW Beetle in 1965. It's amazing that those skinny tires had enough grip to stay on the track at speed.

That was absolutely brilliant and exciting!, many years ago I spent nearly every penny I had on a Formula ford racing car and raced it for the 1982 season in Mondello, it was wonderful and watching this brings it all back!, how I would dearly love to do it again. Well done Win and Tony. Many thanks. Gérard lacey in Ireland. X.

What a great film! So nerve-wracking feeling the Ferrari breathing down the neck of the Jaguar. What a car! He is an excellent driver and it was eye opening to have the explanation. Nursing the tyres. Smoothing out the corners. All the tricks. Not making mistakes. Lovely.

Wow! The entire race on board a beautifully pedigreed factory racer running in peak tune with a genuine modern day motor sport master at the controls and on the absolute limit the entire time. This little excursion was eye watering & there is no getting closer to the action than this. Sincere thanks and gratitude to all who toiled away to create this sublime "experience". Fabulous little D-Type with her sweet singing inline six & careful & capable Win Percy gently guiding her fit together like peaches and cream... Absolutely delicious!

All over the world everyone strives to improve their product. Good luck to you guys trying to improve on this product!... Win Percy opposite locking an immacculately sweet snarling inline six D-Type, ducking & weaving through back markers, trying to get those teency crossplies to retain their composure while the crisp Jag six pack wants to race on regardless and while all this is going on, a pin sharp and relentless Ferrari is steadily closing in for the ultimate kill. This is truly top quality stuff. How can you ever even hope to improve on this? Many thanks. Absolutely thrilling!

He’s steering the car on the limit WITH THE THROTTLE, it seems. Even when he said the tyres were good he was doing that. Not really the hallmark of a great handling car. Very entertaining to drive, but horrible on tyres. Which is why Tony Dron was able to walk around him at the end in a less powerful car. That Dino has 2500cc. The D Type had to be 3.8 Litre. Racing drivers do not saw at the steering unless something is WRONG!

In period, that Birdcage Maserati would've blown the Lister and D Type into the weeds, but post-period "improvements to the breed" have made them MUCH faster than they were in their youth...
@clarkkent2913
@clarkkent2913 4 года назад
Maybe the best racing I've ever seen. To see the Jag struggling on the tires (can't imagine that the Ferrari did much better), however Percy went to the limits in each corner - and even on the straights - and in the end this (short) wheel-to-wheel fight... And all that with these wonderful cars. How boring is a modern DTM race compared to this.

So what you have is a race car, (one not long ago sold for 19.8 million dollars), going flat out and actually racing with the Ferrari Dino, (not sure it's worth but must be in the millions. The Ferrari of today is many times in the hands of people who have money but many cannot drive the car to its potential and many have very view miles. (a drivers car which is not driven, in other words) I have heard the talk for many years about how Ferrari is a complicated car , much of it hand made and that is the reason for its expense. These same people also excuse the maintenance costs and the need for expertise to work on the car. All excuses, IMO, and moving away from what Ferrari racing was about. Porsche and Ferrari had really great race records because of reliability. The older cars wining Lemans many times, a tough 24 hour race. Not engine swaps during the race if you have problems like in modern times. I worked for a guy while in high school who used to repair old english sports cars, Jaguar, Austin Healey, Aston Martin, Triumph, etc. I would stop by being a car nut and ask him about his cars on the lot and talk cars. (I would see DB5's, XKE's, TR 3's, a C Type Jag, a body and frame in the shop which I don't remember what it was but it was bare and looked like a Jag or Maserati race car. I remember him asking me since I stop all the time and talk cars why don't I help out. He threw me right into working on a TR 6. We took apart the seats and re-stuffed, reupholstered them with new leather stitched by hand, redid the interior and since it was fairly clean frame but just dirty/worn interior just did a engine dismantle, clean and redo, new top and repaint. Never had a upholster's needle in my hadn before or paint gun but he would show me and let me at it. My first door was not so good so he had me sand it down and redo ending up doing the complete car. The owner loved it. That same owner brought in a 62 250 GTE which he wanted to hot rod by installing 6 webers instead of the factory three. He wanted a GTO without the cost, although GTO's were not that outrageously expensive in the 1970's. We took apart the engine and rebuilt it. The guy I worked for had never done a Columbo engine but just took it as another machine and did so having me do much or the work . We ran it on a wooden frame hooked to a water can and radiator for cooling and adjusted the valves and carbs on it. This made me see these cars as they were, well built, sophisticated but also simple in design. These guys racing them seem to have that same love for the cars and what they are meant for. The Jag backending into the wall was worth several million dollars and he walked away like it was just another day not seemingly distraught. Back when racing they were crashed and rebuilt to race again. Considering this was some of the most dangerous racing with a 1 in 3 or 2 in 3 chance or actually dying if you raced more than 3 years, many of these cars were crashed and repaired. Now many are held as investments instead of the performance cars they are meant to be. God Bless these guys for keeping the cars alive and doing what they were meant to do regardless of their "worth".

@roadie3124
@roadie3124 3 года назад
@@TheRapand About 15 years ago I was passed by a D-Type while I was doing laps on my bike around a quiet road we used as a training track. It parked a few hundred metres up the road. The driver was doing some tinkering under the bonnet and, naturally, I stopped to have a look and a chat with the driver. It was a replica. Almost as light as the original race cars. Not quite as powerful because of road rules. Good for club races and road cruising at 1/150th of the price of an original. One of my wife's clients, a 60ish architect, had a late 1930s Jaguar SS 100. I'd help him with computer stuff and he'd take me for a drive. I noticed that young women we passed were pausing to stare at the car and were pointing it out to their friends. His comment was "Chick magnet 😁" One of my neighbours had a late 1930s Aston Martin. He used it as a daily driver and it was very competent in modern traffic. This one tinyurl.com/y2cylevn As Maurice Jones said above, these cars were, like their 1950s successors, sophisticated but simple in design. I would say sophisticated for their time. For example, the SS100's handling was sometimes a bit scary. It was OK at speed, but the chassis and the suspension could get wound up going around a tight, uphill corner and then unwind on the straight, leading to a bit of buck jumping. You don't need to have them air freighted at huge cost to a surgically clean, secret location somewhere in Europe for every annual service or minor hiccup. Any competent mechanic can work on them.
