Another sword that's out of my training wheelhouse but sort-of from my pre-martial arts youth: An India-made cavalry saber to replace the first sword I ever bought for myself: An India-made cavalry saber. Based on a popular French design, this one is more properly called an M1862, as there wasn't an official "1860" model. Overall, I think Windlass did a pretty good job for very little money, enough to maybe inspire me to finally learn how to use one of these semi-properly now that HEMA is a thing.
Purchased from Atlanta Cutlery through Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Anybody know why there's a space for the "A" but no "A"?

I have been collecting swords, knives and bayonets from Windlass for decades. I have always been happy with their products.

It's been a sturdy sword, as all my Windlass swords have been. I'm planning a follow up on this one because I made some improvements to the edges and taper, and did similar work on their 1850 Infantry Officer's Saber. I really like them now.

@@michaelrizzo5523 I bought an 1840 Heavy Dragoon Saber and they only had one in stock that was sharpened in house. I would never by a blade sharpened by them again. I would just do it myself. It would not surprise me if a customer returned it because of the badly (un) sharpened blade.

That's my wife's training sabre. Had one for a good few years now. Not a bad sword by any means. Windlass aren't bad for the money. Military Sabre was the first sword I learned to use way back before HEMA was a thing. I wish it was more popular.

@@michaelrizzo5523 She prefers the grip on it to my 1917 cutlass and my older Windlass French cutlass. I'd be lying if I said I had noticed it to be particularly thin. Hers is rather old now so maybe they made the newer ones thinner.

The reason why the grip on the saber "feels skinny" is that it is meant to be wielded wearing a thick leather glove. It was used by cavalry after all.
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 19 дней назад
But I have other cavalry sabers (English, French) that don't have grips nearly this thin, but one other US one that does, and that one's an infantry officer's sword. American thing? American gloves? Uniform code?

In 2020 I also exploded into all sorts of sword collecting and got that one too! One of my favorite little moments in the movie The Last Samurai was showing that kind of saber against a katana for a moment lol. Perhaps the skinning grip is meant to accommodate using these with riding gloves. I had A LOT of difficulty with getting it to cut 2 liters at first to, there's definitely a unique feel to nailing the edge alignment in a swing with a curved cavalry saber to many other types. Extra sharpening definitely helped too. Check out the late 1800s european cavalry swords/the 1908 british-commonwealth ones, they were like a hybrid of sword and lance. The 1913 one Patton designed based on these is cool too but the handle is so chunky that it feels almost cumbersome even in my giant hands, and definitely feels like its more optimized for using on horse than foot.

I've been watching a lot of "Katana vs..." HEMA videos. Seems like the biggest disadvantages are reach and speed. Unfortunately, I'm starting to realize my Dr. No hand may be more of a barrier to HEMA than I'd hoped...
@jamesm1
@jamesm1 2 года назад
@@michaelrizzo5523 I've definitely noticed the reach thing too. When people use the longer Nodachi/Odachi that gap is closed pretty well though. Perhaps you could look into HEMA styles that use a shield/buckler, one of those in your less dexterous hand would probably help mitigate things.

The standard specification for the 1860 was a 35-inch blade with an overall length of 41 inches. Windlass states that the blade produced by WIndlass is 35 inches long. The site also says it should flex 20 degrees.

Over the last year I have been into sub $300 katanas and wakizashi as provided by Hanbon Forge and now was thinking about branching out with this 1860 from Winglass/Museum Replicas as my first piece. So what do you think after spending some time with it? Worth the nickels spent?
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 2 года назад
Well, considering how cheap it is, it's pretty well made. I did reprofile the edges to cut a bit better, but I just don't seem to "click" with curved sabers. This one is about as much curve as I can work with comfortably, but I haven't spent much time with it as I do love my katanas and my straight cut-and-thrust swords a lot more. Funny that my favorite saber-like sword is my Talwar.

As for windless shipping unsharpened blades.... It's a strange thing but in India apparently has a law that any blade over a certain length*, unless it's antique, cannot be shipped out of country if sharp. *I think it's around 20 in and under they can ship with edges. Most of the Bowie knives I bought from them came Sharp and I believe they're Cobra Steel line which are all shorter blades come Sharp. As far as the Windless Battle cry line they do come sharp but I believe they're shipped doll and sharpened stateside. I have a lot of comments for this one don't I LOL

Still looks good. It's partly faded with multiple cleanings to a dark sort of "graphite" gray, but it's also nicely etched in. Definitely liking it better since I re-profiled the edge a bit and healed up enough to get a better grip on it. Scabbard still stinks of kerosene or whatever it came packed in.

on the small grip,,, well, first of all you should be wearing gloves most of the time, so your hand will be more filled by the glove,, (cavalry might wear thick leather gloves), and then also, you aren't supposed to grip it so tightly, a swing is kind of a specific motion, so you would hold it more with your thumb on the back, like a spatula or something.
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 3 года назад
Ah, I was afraid a glove would be the answer, as it is for other thin-grip European style swords. I suppose I'll have to custom-make something as my braces don't accommodate any kind of gloves, probably a gauntlet with the brace built in. As for the thumb on the back, I was aware of that but am not able to do it with the missing thumb tendon, so that may slow my progress, or it may turn out this kind of saber just isn't to be my thing.

I only cut very rarely, usually just to test a new build. It wasn't something we did often in my original training, which was almost all kata and fencing. Also I almost exclusively cut cardboard now, which I absolutely don't recommend because it can damage blades, and I strike hard targets to pressure test blades (I've been showing this in recent videos). I just don't have tatami in my budget right now. I miss the days when I had "green" targets readily available.

I bought a WindlassConfederate Cavalry Sabers at a Museum Replicas clearance sale years ago. (Seems I have a lot of blades from their clearance sales lol) I paid $80 for it I think. Didn't see any flaws with it, except for 'India' etched in the blade above the 'C.S.A.' etching. But Kult of Athena shows the same etching; so while it's a historically inaccurate it's apparently intentional. Odd (Here's a link to a pic of the etching www.kultofathena.com/images/500646_3_l.jpg) Only three issues I have with it: 1) the leather feels fake. 2) leather is a weird color 3) wire on the grip being to exposed, it should be recessed deeper. Otherwise the saber is pretty good. I've not handled origionals so I can't say for sure, but to me the blade is fairly light & lively. Mine is also peened and has held tight for many years. I heard it is heavy and clunky, do feel is a bad sword for a beginner?
@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145
@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 3 года назад
@@junichiroyamashita it's a little tricky to answer that question because unfortunately windless products over the years have been inconsistent. I have a couple of the rapiers that are wonderful but I've also seen a rapier by them that was so whippy it might as well be a car antenna. The saber I have is not clunky or heavy and I would recommend for a beginner. However I cannot guarantee that if you purchased one today it would be the same as mine. I think over the years their sabers have been more consistent than some of their other swords. if you were ever in the United States near Conyers Georgia I'd recommend you stop by the showroom so you can handle the swords before buying. But if one can't manage that then I would say it's likely any of the Windlass Confederate era sabers should be ok, but be open to the possibility it might not be good. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of companies making savers for beginners. Most if not all the Cold Steel saber blades are made by Windlass so that narrows the field further. Universal swords make similar swords but from what I hear they're a slight step down from Windlass. In summary my best advice is if you want to beginner saber I think winless is probably a safe bet; but be prepared to potentially send it back if you don't like it.

@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 3 года назад
@@junichiroyamashita yeah I understand the issue unless you get the sharpening service from wherever you buy it a Windlass (except for some of their knives and Battlecry swords) definitely comes blunt. Personally the way I sharpen mine, since I don't have a belt sander anymore, is to establish the initial edge with a file and then work it with a whetstone. but if you're not experienced with sharpening or don't want to put the effort into it then cold steel sabers do come sharpened. and as the blades for those are made by winless they're fairly similar as I remember.

My guess, and it is just a guess cuz I'm definitely not an expert, on why there's just a U.S. and not U.S.A. is that I think sabers were generally just etched with U.S. during the civil war. Why Windlass did not center the U.S.? I imagine they just screwed up I'm willing to bet originally they plan to put an A, then someone brought it to their attention that the A was inaccurate; so they removed the A. Why did they not center the US? My guess is that the etching is done with some kind of machine and it was easy to remove the A but would not have been easy to rearrange the placement of letters? Here's a pic of a saber on *ebay that shows a U.S. etching pic 11 of 12 shows the etching.
