It's not as hard as this video suggests anymore. You don't need Thunderbolt. You can use the Belkin charge & sync cable (made for VR) and everything with the Studio Display will work with just one cable (to the Studio Display anyway) - webcam, speakers, USB-C ports, 5K@60Hz. Lots of folks have had success using this. Then you can just install bootcamp drivers on your PC and you'll get brightness control too. You just need a relatively recent GPU that supports DSC, namely Navi or later GPUs from AMD or RTX GPUs from NVIDIA.
@@billyjick9627 you'll have to get from eBay or Alibaba unless you live in china. Unless this changes in the future, it's not on Amazon. But do a search for "huawei belkin display vr", it'll be a black cable that has 2x USB a and 1x display port that merges into one thunderbolt 3.0 out. I bought mine on eBay
I got two Studio displays for a dual monitor setup, one connected to my MacBook Pro 14 and the other to a work Dell Latitude 3420 that has a USB-C connection. The speakers work, camera and mic all work fine and I get a 5K resolution. All I did to set up the brightness is adjust it on my MacBook then move the cable back to the Dell. When I see that there is a fFirmware update I just swap the cable back to the MacBook so the monitor can get the firmware update. There are no other monitors that compare and the MacBook can push two 5K displays and I have had fun running both on the Mac too. I highly recommend these monitors to anyone. B&H has these monitors in stock if you want to scoop one up and my 2nd one arrived in only three days.
I am thinking of getting one and was surprised by this video although Apple store folks told me it should work. So my question is this.. in your case, you are just using a standard USB-C to USB-C cable? One end on the USB-C out from your Dell computer and the other end on the Apple Display? Just a standard cable? And it works fine?
@@blueplanettrips Yes, standard USB-C Cable that came with the monitor will work fine with my model Dell laptop. It should work on a Thunderbolt 4 PC and USB-C PC but I did not have success with a Thunderbolt 3 PC.
I don't think it was the bandwidth of your original adapters, I think it was that your cable wasn't bi-directional. Most of those cable adapters (like the Uni) are unidirectional and meant to flow the other way. A bidirectional cable should work.
While I love the design of the display, I too find it frustrating that it can’t really be used with anything other than a Mac. Got an Asus ROG display for about $1000CAD and loving it. Far better for my uses, and 27” at 4K on a Mac looks amazing.
But 5K is even better because it scales perfectly. Half the 5K resolution is 2560 x 1440 ppi. And let that resolution be the ideal resolution for a 27" display!
@@keesswier212 At least from my experience I have zero complaints using macOS on a 27” 4K display, plus my MacBook Air would be the only device I have that could take advantage of 5K anyways. Studio Display also just really doesn’t make sense to me because I want to hook it up to a Nintendo Switch and PS5 as well.
@@cadenchurchill4296 I only indicated that a 5K display scales better than a 4K display of 27" in MacOS. The fact that MacOS can also display a 27" display with a 4K resolution is a nice bonus. MacOS is a fantastically good operating system. The Studio Display is indeed not the right monitor for you if you want to connect a Nintendo Switch or PS5 to it. I work with graphics and CAD apps. So high resolution and good color accuracy are important.
I got it plug and play on my Asus Strix laptop which has thunderbolt. Everything works right from the start without any drivers: screen, speakers, microphone, webcam, usb-c ports. 60Hz is low for gaming (but 5k is so heavy on GPU it's fine) but the color accuracy and speakers are fantastic.
The cable suggested works, but you have to make sure to configure your graphics card. I have an older MSI Trident Arctic 8th Gen w/ NVIDIA GTX GeForce 1070 (~purchased in 2018) and it would just flicker black (and nothing else) at first. Killed me for a week or so, but I figured that it doesn't make sense that a signal is being sent but it was just flickering. So I attached two monitors to my PC, configured the StudioDisplay to output via NVIDIA Control Panel to 3820 x 2160 (and set it as my default monitor) - and boom, it worked. Looks like some older video cards just can't support/output the signal nicely for 5k resolution.
If anything this video shows how woefully inadequate the port situation is on most PCs. Thunderbolt 3 has been available since late 2015, it’s time for PCs to catch up.
AMD machines don't have Thunderbolt, but an Intel PC of similar caliber probably WOULD have Thunderbolt and be able to run the display just fine from iGPU. Sure, we are pushing a ton of pixels, but it's only 60 Hz and that's really the most annoying aspect of the Mac right now... Macs can only support 4K60 and 5K60 and even the 32" XDR display is still only 60 Hz. In terms of display support, it's the Mac that suffers today. We already know the 16" M1 Pro can do 120 Hz on built-in display. Mac users should find it infuriating that $2499 (US) M1 Pro can't output 4k120, especially because some PCs can often do it at half the cost.
@@thedevincrutcher Why don’t AMD machines have Thunderbolt? Even the iPad Pro has Thunderbolt. At this point the iPhone might get Thunderbolt before AMD machines do, and again it’s a 2015 port so what’s the holdup AMD?
Connected it with my Surface laptop studio, works flawlessly. 5k resolution, volume is adjustable. The battery is also charging. I will need my Ipad pro to control the brightness though..
Did you do anything special? Mine does not want to cooperate. I have the Surface Dock 2 and can get it to show via that USBC display port but directly from my Laptop Studio does not get any good results. I have tried multiple cords with now luck
I bought the Cable Matters cable linked in description. Connected to my PC display port 1.4 and the Studio Display is not turning on :( Did this cable work for everyone else? However it works plugged into the thunderbolt port on the LG Ultrafine 4K monitor
EDIT !! Dispay Buddy will allow you to adjust brightness on Windows, with a nice UI and support for keyboard shortcuts. Pro XDR is also supported (any monitor with DDC/CI support will be in fact). HOWEVER. You have to use a USB C to Display Port cable, as show in the video. If you have USB C on your PC with the GPU linked to it, Display Buddy will recognize it but won't adjust anything. IN ANY CASE : you can install the bootcamp drivers with brigadier, and adjust the brightness using the slider in the bootcamp display settings.
do you know how can I connect Surface Book 2 to Studio Display? No thunderbolt or display port, only USB-C. Is there a cable or dock that I can use to connect the two?
@@koyaaanisquatsi If Surface Book 2 has Display Port transport over USB C support it will work. My laptop has a USB C port that supports it, and i can use the original Apple cable to connect it, with support for 5K resolution, audio, mic, and webcam. Only center stage feature, which is macOS dependant is not working. The original cable is branded as "Thunderbolt" however it supports Apple products that have only USB C (iPad Pro for example). So if a Thunderbolt controller is not detected, it will fall back to Display Port over USB C.
Thank you for steering me away! I've been wondering how it could work. I guess I'll settle for a 4k monitor with multiple display inputs and height adjustable at no extra charge. Hopefully it looks good enough for MacOS.
I use both PC (for work) and Mac (for personal use). Can I easily switch between PC and Mac with the Studio Display? Or I must plug and unplug the USB-C cable each time I want to switch computers?
I have been fighting the same problem after upgrading my Apple Mac Pro to Mac Studio and Studio Display. I have been trying multiple cables and adaptors from Amazon (and returning them). I have the recommended Cable Matters 8K DisplayPort to Thunderbolt cable. It works well from Mac Studio to an older DisplayPort monitor. However, when I can from my PC to the Studio Display it does not not produce a picture. The display is identified by the PC but remains black with the occasional flicker. The Amazon UK website also shows this cable as not bidirectional.
I bought an Asus laptop last year and it has Thunderbolt 4 ports. I connected it to the Studio Display with Windows 11 and it worked flawlessly with no special drivers loaded. It recognized the monitor, speakers, webcam, and microphone. At first it simply mirrors the main screen, but you can use the display settings to use it as an extended desktop. From what I understand, Linux has support for the studio display built into the latest kernels and there's a driver in testing to adjust the brightness. I have another PC that runs Linux Mint 21 and has USB-C, but it doesn't output the video over USB, no thunderbolt. When I connect that to the studio display, the speakers, webcam, and microphone are recognized and I can select them for use. I'm going to be upgrading that PC to a MB that has Thunderbolt 3, so it should work fully after that.
Hey Guys, I have purchased this cable (2 versions - the only difference being that one is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and one with Thunderbolt 4). Neither of these cables is working for me? Am I missing something? The product description seems to suggest that these cables are for using the display port end in the monitor, rather than the other way around. Can someone please help?
When I use this cable with my Cyberpower PC connecting it to my Pro XDR Display, it starts up in 1080 and when I change the resolution to higher, the screen goes black. Any ideas?
There should be an amendment at the 4 minute mark. In order to add a TB3 or TB4 card to a pc, you will need to ensure that your motherboard has a Thunderbolt header on the board, and then you can use it in conjunction with the PCIE x4 slot to add thunderbolt. The presence of a TB header on your MOBO can be found by going through the online manual for the motherboard. For AMD, it is primarily on High-End motherboards, but not guaranteed to be there. For intel Boards, it might be a little less rare.
HELP!!! I have the opposite problem. I have a MacBook Pro M1 and I'm attempting to use a 32" HP monitor with it and although the display for still images works great, when I run a video of my own making, as well as some RU-vid videos, the display locks up and eventually puts me back to the user login screen. I've addressed the issue with Apple a zillion times it seems and they can't figure it out. I've tried the HDMI cord included with the monitor as well the USB C cable and again, both work, but not for all videos. The size of the video seems to be the issue. Any suggestions??? I'm a photographer who rarely does video and I'm not familiar with all the size variables so I could really use the help...and thanks in advance.
I only wanna use the Display sometimes for a notebook (which has a thunderbolt port) and want to play some games (nothing professional) - I hope then this will be a "good" setup?!? There are tools on a windows pc to control the brightness (and I still have my MAC studio)
great review - thanks for taking the time. apple missed the mark with this - also downsides is using the vesa connector - can't be done without buying the specific vesa version. you can't just use a regular apple studio monitor...
thx for the very informative video! Correct me if I'm wrong: you can't plug a Thunderbolt pci card randomly in any pc, it must match your actual motherboard and it's TB header connector. Cheers
In my understanding, Apple Studio Display is more like the “infamous” LG UltraFine 4K (24-inch) and 5K (second version) monitors that were lined up next to Apple computers. Just like LG’s UltraFine lineup, Mac Studio Display will behave nicely if you manage to send video and data signals from the same cable. Both Huawei and Belkin’s charge and sync cable for Huawei’s VR Glass do a great job when it comes to catering for those in this scenario. It is simple, plug & play. Unlike a Thunderbolt 3 & 4 add-on card, you are free from all the hiccups that come with software issues. Brightness, audio and additional USB ports also work very well. The only downside is you are limited to USB 2.0 on those USB ports. The second alternative is Club 3D’s “CAC 1332” HDMI cable. From my readings through the Internet, this cable might have a second iteration that does not have a USB additional data cable anymore. So, be cautious. But the first iteration works like charm without any hiccups. If you happen to have a Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X or S, or Playstation 5, you are good to go with this cable. For those PC users also, this cable will work very well. There is one downside though. You can no longer access to USB ports (so you are limited to audio). There are additional fourth and fifth alternative solutions that can actually help (if you are a desktop PC user). If you have a compatible motherboard, you can attach a Thunderbolt card. Unfortunately, not all computers are Thunderbolt 3 (or 4) compatible, so you might be out of luck. In the fourth and the last alternative, you use Delock 89582 PCI Express Card. This card is a re-branded version of Sunix UPD2018 in the EU market. Unfortunately, I do not have enough information about this product. In summary, Apple Studio Display will only come into your use if you go through these alternative solutions. If you are already a Mac user, and you really want to make this kind of monitors work, here is your endeavor waiting for you. But if you are a PC user, I do not recommend USB-C only monitors at all. They do not support KVM switch, and more importantly because they need macOS for software updates, you are going to have trouble. Addendum You can actually control brightness and additional settings thanks to ClickMonitor DDC. Unfortunately, the software development has apparently stopped, but it works great with MS Windows 11. If you are a Linux user, gDDCControl is quite useful.
@@destructodisk9074 Hi again! I am afraid that you may not be able to connect your Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck to your 27 inch Apple Thunderbolt Display. This special monitor is very much one of its own kinds. You in fact need a Thunderbolt interface to be able to send video signal to that monitor. Unlike Apple's 6K and 5K monitors of its own (in addition to LG's 24 inch 4K and 27 inch 5k (of second iteration), this monitor does not accept display port signal at all in any case and only communicate through thunderbolt. You can do this by getting yourself either a laptop with thunderbolt (or USB4) support, or a desktop with thunderbolt card. Then you can use a Thunderbolt 3 (or 4) adapter to Thunderbolt 2 and be able to plug in. I hope this helps.
I tried the cable master dp to typec 3meters version, but the screen always flicker and the image is blurred. Unplug it and plug in again it works, but everytime I have to replug the dp cable…
Thanks, I am in the exact same situation. Is there no TB3 2 in to 1 toggle switch available? BTW you mentioned taking the output from the PC's GPU 'into' the PCI TB3 card, is this done externally or internally?
I have a HP Elite 840 G5 work laptop that didn’t work with the recommended Cable Matters display to thunderbolt cord from this video, but I found the Caldigit Element hub works. My pc laptop has a thunderbolt port, but when I plug into the apple studio display, nothing somes up. I have a MacBook Pro for personal use, and the apple studio display replaced an LG 4K so I was hoping I could use it with my pc too. Going straight into the pc with the thunderbolt cable, my laptop screen dims and doesn’t recognize the display in settings. I even tried the suggested cable matters cord using the display port on the laptop dock, but even that didn’t work, though at least the windows 10 software recognized a display. Thankfully, the Caldigit Element Hub worked. I had boutht it a few months ago when they had an introductory price and it has paid off significantly…though months later. Any thoughts on why only this hub works? The camera, mic, speakers do not work with Element hub though. If you have thoughts on how to connect those, let me know. Nice video overall, so hoped it helped others.
Thank You SOOO much. I am a Mac user and own a Mac Studio with 2 apple 27 inch displays. I have also purchase a custom pc for animation work. I have two additional ultra fine 5K LG monitors and nothing I bought work with for the pc. I had giving up and purchased a PC monitor that Best Buy Indicated it will be perfect. I picked it up the monitor work but the colors and resolution were not good for what I do. I just order that cable... again.. thank you. Amazon indicated I will have the next day. I will definitely be returning that monitor I picked up from Best Buy. I believe is more of a gamers Monitor and not for what I needed... also curved.
I can't even get my Thunderbolt Display to adjust brightness or sound say on in Windows on Mac as it is. But if you're creative, U can copy those Windows for Mac bits into your PC if it works. As a trick for me, I just hot plug the Mac Display into a Mac to adjust to where I need for the day & swap it back. It seams to hold its setting. U still need to unplug to turn off anyway . Same for old LED Cinema w/ Mini DisplayPort.
On my Windows 11 machine with Nvidia 3090ti, the brightness can't be adjusted and the display won't turn on automatically after boot up - I have to unplug and plug back in the USB-C cable. Perhaps I'm missing something?
My situation is that I have a personal computer (iMac) and company issued laptop that I cannot make changes to. My desk only has enough room for the my personal computer, laptop and one display. I really wanted to find a way to make this work so I have the color accuracy while editing photos on my iMac. I had to find a way around this. The only thing I could find was the Dell - WD22TB4 Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station that I have the studio display cable connected to that I can get both picture and audio, however it's a lower resolution. When I don't need audio, I use a dell adapter-usb-c to displayport and this gives me my resolution.
any idea how to use PC and Macbook Pro at the same time. Is there something like a splitter where i can choose which system i wanna use without plug the cable out and the other one in? thx for ur help
I am trying to connect my PC with Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card. I got many cables and none of them worked. THey just blinked black and some dark blue color. So I just ordered the CableMatters cable in the link to try. I hope that this works. Is there anything else I am missing? I have the Studio Display in this RU-vid post. Thanks Marty
Have you had any input lag issues? I am able to connect from my PC laptop to the studio display and its getting intermittent input lag. Its like it drops to 30hz refresh rate every minute or so. Very strange.
It doesnt matter for me if i dont have sound from the screen, i have a 5.1 system from logitech and i bet that this sounds better.... Also dont need a webcam. So the cable solution is fine for me, but how do you change brightness?
Thank you very much for the video, the cable tip saved my life. Now I have another problem, find a Switcher so I don't have to change the cable behind the monitor. If you know anything let me know.

On old PC I can see that but at least it does DP. I didn't realize that. My old 27" Thunderbolt did not but most decent motherboards since 2014/5 have an option & many modern mini gaming have TB3/4 integrated in I/O. & turns the display into a TB hub. I used the Apple part usb-c/TB3/4 to TB1/2. (It does not pass-through DisplayPort, or not for me)

Great video!😎I have a 27 inch late 2013 iMac and want to use it as an external monitor for my Dell G16 laptop. Do you think it will work? What cable should I buy?🥺
ok so I am considering upgrading my monitors and I am considering the studio's due to resolution and ppi -- my personal use and free lance work is off my 2021 MacBook Pro MAX 16' -- however my 9-5 main job, company provided laptop is windows... but it does run thunderbolt-- so I am hoping it would run maybe not seamlessly but at least smoothly... any insight from others who have hybrid setups like me...
so, I have a studio display which of course I use with a MacBook. My son has an Omen 16 gaming PC, so he can plug it in and it works with the studio display, I just have to order the son you linked, right? Excuse my question but I'm French-speaking and I don't have any input 🤦🏻
Bought the cable you suggested and as opposed to any other I tried, the display is actually turning on. But only during booting of Windows. After that, the display just "flickers" between grey and black, i. e. off and on. Any suggestions? I suppose it has something to do with the resolution. But I can't change it like this. Graphics card video output is Displayport 1.4 so it should be able to drive the 5k resolution. Thanks in advance!
Hmm, try plugging it into the display after boot first. Next I'd try a different port off your graphics card. Last thing id try is another version of that cable. - Josh
Hmmmm, that is probably the case though I'm not sure if the HDMI ones could theoretically carry sound as well as picture, they certainly can when looking at TV setups.
What works with a Laptop ? Got it to work with my tower but nothing seems to work on my pc laptop . I only get audio Ive got a Nvidia 3080ti graphics card and thunderbolt 4 compatible with 3. Has anybody got this to work on a pc laptop?
I use Parallels Desktop virtualization software on my Mac. Windows 11 runs perfectly on my Mac without the limitations you get with a Windows PC when you want to connect a Studio Display to it.
Hi, thank you for the information. Will a Cable Matters USB C to HDMI Cable work for a Mac Book Pro that does not have a USB C port? Thank you for your help.
Did you *actually* try with a Thunderbolt card? It won't work, amost surely. These TB cards are certified to work *only* with specific motherboards which have a specific (proprietary) header.
Hmmm, try all the display port outs on the GPU card first. Also make sure you turn on the PC before plugging it in. It could be that the GPU is tool old, I’m not sure how new the Display Port standard is that the studio display supports. - Josh
How did the cable work while not being bidirectional? It looks like the displayport end of the cable is supposed to be plugged into the display and not the PC. Could you clarify? Thanks!
The bandwidth is enough on the cable for it to be bi-directional I guess. Most of the cables that are USB-C to DisplayPort work exactly as you described but this one seems to do the trick. Check out the link in the description to the blog post I mentioned that goes into more detail about the chord. It might explain how it works a bit better. - Josh
The problem with using the Mac Studio Display with a Windows PC computer is that Apple company has its own way of doing things that are particular to Apple Mac. As a result this display will work fine with Apple Mac Computers, however to get this display to work with a Windows PC, the Windows PC will need to be equipped with the Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 video and sound output that Apple uses. Also to adjust brightness the Windows PC will need appropriate Windows Drivers to adjust the brightness.
The Only way to use this things without apple product are using Intel based CPU that support Thunderbolt Plugs, since Thunderbolt technology are developed by Intel And Apple.. So no wonders if you use the AMD Based CPU, you won't have any Thunderbolt plug since AMD didn't contribute to this technology.. Even when apple didn't using intel chip to power their mac lineup, They still can use the thunderbolt plug since they are one of the contributor.
Hi this video really nice and informative. meanwhile, i need your suggestion for my scenario, like i have apple thunderbolt display model A1407, and it need to connect with my lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon gen 9 laptop. and i tried with thunderbolt 2 to 3 connector , but its not working. so whats your suggestion in this case to make it work
Apple should start selling display controller for outside mac use case. I know it isn't a perfect solution, but so does using Apple product is (most of the time).
As Avi Romanoff wrote below, the Belkin cable for Huavei VR glasses is excellent. Everything works with it, both the sound and the webcam. But the brightness of the monitor is just nuclear. you are right about windows, but this is a Mac made display meaning Mac OS is made for high pixel density , Gamers just want an ultravide 1440p display ... this display is great for video editing, productivity and watching movies, the sound is amazing like often with , but the price is really too high , I'm happy I found out a brand new one for less than 1300 euros instead of 1750...
