We have replaced our servers with cloud services in Microsoft 365 for email, files, phones, security and device controls.
The Coronavirus pandemic of 2020 moved us from a central office we drive to, to a virtual office we connect into, powered by Microsoft Teams.
Our backend IT is virtual, and our offices are virtual.
But there is one thing that is left…the end-user computers -- they are becoming virtual too, powered by Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop hosted in Microsoft Azure.
If you share my vision (and belief) of a 100% (or close to it) virtual office with 100% cloud IT from the backend IT systems to the frontend end-user computers then this video is for you.
The future of end-user computing for businesses is Windows Virtual Desktop.
This video will get you beyond "not knowing what you don't know" to having a proper technical, street-smart, business oriented orientation into what Windows Virtual Desktop might look like for your company.
This video will help senior IT managers "connect the dots" between the world of legacy Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and the modern Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) cloud services.
You won't make these mistakes:
Paralysis - you don't have the confidence to make the move to WVD, and your IT skills and the company's IT remains dated….your career floundering.
Overpricing - then the project never gets funded.
Underpricing - then when the project goes into production, it isn't powerful enough, users hate it and management isn't happy with you, then the only way to fix it is to increase the power, and now the monthly Azure cost is over budget.
This video took over 4 months to put together and it is a PACKED 3 hours. You'll need to take notes and watch it 2-3 times.
Below is a detailed list of time-codes you can use to refer back to certain parts of the video. I HIGHLY recommend against skipping around to parts that interest you most because that is how most of you approach your IT education - in bits and pieces by Google searching for a solution, but without a proper training plan an that leads to not being confidence to move forward with a big change like this, and thus your IT skills remain stagnent, and your companies IT remains dated. This video will help you change this .

Should also mention with the high end GPU WVD that you should follow the steps in Microsoft’s doc called ‘Configure graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration for Windows Virtual Desktop’ to get the full performance out of the VM. Most fail to do that and end up wasting money by upgrading the VM when not needing to.

@2:30:58 - - $18,000 for 6 workstation for 4-years, then renewed with newer/better machines. - $720 per month per year for 4-years, that's ~$35,000 after 4-years, & hoping you get new instance type/size to switch to at the same price, yes that includes all the needed stuff, it's not cheaper, just better.

Thanks Wayne, I enjoy your videos a lot more than others as you always delve into 'why' you should do something and not just 'how' to do something. I'd really appreciate it if you could make a video on getting started with WVD and your considerations on setting it up (i.e. real world VNET implications, and since it requires AAD DS do you usually stick to AAD DS Group Policies or leverage Intune at all?)

Hi Wayne, fantastic content. Really appreciate the effort you put into explaining all these services. RE: WVD load balancing - say I have a single user left on each of those 4 WVD's at the end of the day. I guess drain mode won't work or scale down? Seems pretty unlikely all users would log off (for instance) WVD 2,3,4 and only be left with a few users on the remaining WVD.
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Drain mode will remove a host from the pool once all users are off the host. So, if there is a user on each host at the start of the drain mode, then presumably at some point, one user at a time will go offline and then as they do, that host will also be taken out of the pool for use the rest of the day. If one of those users decided to go back in, they would be send to one of the hosts that remain available.

Its not long since i found your channel but its GREAT! This video is just what i needed! I started at a new company and they are moving to wvd. however all the other servers they just moved it to the cloud like dc and File server i wonder why they would still do that if i see your video? now its time to move over and they get scared and think its better to have rds in the cloud instead of wvd they think its cheaper and less work? One more question in your setup what with the print server just separte VM in Azure? Again Great Info!
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Thanks Creanoid Sync! Regarding " they get scared and think its better to have rds in the cloud instead of wvd they think its cheaper and less work" - I have a VERY strong opinion about this point and here it is: they are scared because they lack the understanding, experience and confidence to do the project and thus are reverting to what they do know which is very dated IT around RDS...skills they learned 20 years ago when they were heavy into the "learning" phase of their career. Now they just want to keep the network quiet and enjoy their life. Learning new stuff in IT can be hard, painful and stressful. This is why your team should find a cloud partner who can provide the experience and confidence...and get you and your team trained. Do not go back in time and do an RDS solution. It's not good for your company and not good for you, or your teams career. Just go on Microsoft's partner search site and find a few partners that look good to interview. For the print server - you don't need one.

Only half way through but this is so well done. I have users that keep many documents open at night. Is that still doable in this scenario even if we close down the availability of the system after 7:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.? When they log in the next morning will all their documents and applications still be open just like it is with their current Windows 10 Pro computers now?

Wayne: Question about the soft delete feature in Azure File Share. I thought that it only works on the share level meaning that if someone deletes the share, the share can be restored (along with all of the snapshots) back and not the actual files themselves within the share. If they get deleted, then they are deleted. If a file is deleted, then you would need to go to a backup to restore it as Azure File Service does only VSS for a snapshot (that isn't accessible from explorer). As a side note I have always found your videos extremely informative and that it is very interesting on how different people do different things. I have looked at Nerdio and they are more intent on using IAAS for everything in spinning on DCs and file shares for the infrastructure where your practice uses a lot of the SAAS services for things instead.
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Hey Tracy! Good point on the Azure File share, and thanks for sharing on that. And I appreciate the note of support as well. It is true, I prefer as much SAAS as possible. The more legacy Windows Server VM's I take out, the more interesting IT work seems to get these days :)

That's an outstanding introduction to the topic. One question though: Why do you use AADDS? I feel it's a very limited service when it comes to manageability (limited admin rights) as well as scalability (setting up a third DC in a different region for lower latency? nope). Maybe I'm missing something?
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 2 года назад
Thanks! Bottom line on AADDS is we can't get this done with only AAD, especially if the client already has traditional AD. The smoothest setup for them will be using their existing domain (ideally fully migrated to an Azure virtual network), and integrated with AADDS.

In the end of the video you compare prices of the compute per user to buying desktops. But on top of the azure compute each user is also going to need a thin client to actually use the vdi. So in your comparison to make it apples vs apples you should also include the thin client cost as a one time investment since buying desktops is seen as such as well. Even though thin clients will last longer to be fait in intial investment the would factor into the price. What's you take on that? Also for the vdi solution you needd Microsoft 365 E3 but for the desktop one you could use Office 365 E3 which results in a monthly cost difference as well. P.S. I really like your videos and you explain thing very well and I know pricing comparison is difficult and the other benefits for going to the cloud can be huge but still if you talk apples vs apples...
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Hey Johan! Interesting points. Normally want happens in these situation is when you convert to WVD, you turn the existing desktop computers into thin clients and just run them until they die (or the OS goes end off life), then purchase thin clients or go BOYD if you are expanding additional users. Same with thin client hardware, it runs 8 years with minimal upkeep and doesn't require any setup for new users. Still, a good point, I could have added more detail around that...but man..I was exhausted with this video and wanted to be done with it! Office 365 E3 doesn't come with a WVD license, but M365 E3 does, as well as Windows E-3, but our clients only use M365 subscriptions in any event.

Wayne - do you know if something like a Panasonic CF-33 rugged laptop could pass it's internal GPS to the Windows Virtual Desktop? This would be an amazing use case for us if we could have our mobile users, who require that internal GPS, to use WVD for all applications or desktop over LTE.
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Hey Lakergreat1, I'm not aware of something like that, and that would seem pretty advanced for WVD at this point. I'm also wondering if that would even be something Microsoft would pursue. The virtual desktops are in an Azure datacenter. I'd think a company would want to track the devices the user is connecting from for GPS. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for another great video Wayne! I learned so much watching this whole thing. 3 hours..can't imagine how much time it took you to make this..amazing effort! I was wondering one thing though. Why would you make to comparison with fat clients in your pricing and cost comparisons? I love your idea about the "true" BYOD policy (especially with all the youngsters around who have specific wishes in brand and OS) but I don't believe many companies will adapt to this just yet. This said the companies will also needs to invest in thin clients, the costs of the thin clients although cheaper than fat clients are still pretty high and will change up the comparison big time because the user needs a virtual desktop and an actual client, where as with the fat client the user only needs that one client. Personally I would do a comparison to RDS. This because (A) most of the companies in the 25 to 400 user range are relying on RDS at this moment (at least in our clientele) and (B) because these companies already have Thin Clients and you can compare the cost of running the whole system against the on-prem server part without even mentioning the clients. My gut says that the companies that still use fat clients with on-prem servers most probably will move to a Modern Workplace solution. Which is where my expertise is :-) At this moment we only use WVD for publishing apps to facilitate Legacy apps on Modern Workplace environments. But after seeing this video I can't wait to implement a full WVD environment! Again, thank you so much for the effort, can't wait for the next video!
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Thanks Guus!! Really appreciate the nice words and encouragement! I completely agree that the big legacy systems out there are going to be stuck in RDS-land for a long time. RDS is what they are comfortable with and most IT Pro's in management positions in 2020 don't have the enthusiasm to do the deep learning and go through all the headaches of making huge full-on changes to something that is truly 100% virtual: backend cloud services, virtual office, and virtual end-user computers, and true BYOD. I do see your point though about comparing RDS to WVD for ROI, though I just can't get excited enough about doing that type of video :) One note about thin clients - they last much longer than fat clients and you can basically run them until they die, unlikely fat clients where you have to be more proactive. Thin clients are super simple to setup and require almost no maintenance. Their lifetime cost is 90% less than fat clients. Thanks again Guus!

Wayne, I'm only half way thru, but wanted to stop and say awesome and easy to understand info. I have two quick questions for you. 1. How are you running QuickBooks with Azure Files and are you able to run it in multi user mode? I currently have it running on a file server in Azure with the QB Database MGR. 2. We have a few WVD environments built using Nerdio, the automated build and management tool. If we want to build an ARM version from scratch can we do so in the same Azure tenant while the original is in use? Thanks in advance for your comments!
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Thanks Intellitechsonsite! I just use Azure Files like a regular file share that we are all used to, but I don't have a server to deal with. I haven't tried QB in multi-user mode in WVD yet. Please let me know if you do try it. I'm familiar with Nerdio, but I'm not certain if you can or can't per the case you are mentioning. I'd imagine it wouldn't be a problem based on what I do know about Nerdio.

Thanks for the quick response! Do you have a cost calculator that you're able to share? One of the things we struggle with is picking the right VM series for the hosts. We currently have a 9 user client with two D4asv4 hosts and they are constantly encountering Chrome issues amongst other things. They do have a DC and a FS, all disks are Premium accept for the OS disk on the FS. Teams and OneDrive are uninstalled. Would you recommend an F series?
@intellitechsonsite
@intellitechsonsite 3 года назад
One more for you. Are you adding in the $100 cost for Azure ADDS on the 8 user w/teams scenario you show in this video? If so what VM series and storage are you using that meters out at $140 for a business hours usage? Thanks!
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
@@intellitechsonsite Hmm..it's just too hard to say without knowing all the apps and the various other things I talk about that we look for per the video. There is also the issue with your own level of experience in the setup you did - in other words, how seasoned are you in doing this...how many of these have you down over how many years...are you formally certified and trained...what is your relationship with Microsoft and what gold competencies has your firm achieved. My experience is that 99% of IT pro's out there wing it with over-confidence and putting bits and pieces of Google-searched information together so they have just enough technical knowledge to get something working and then their leaning drops off substantially. Then they complain how this or that Microsoft technology sucks, ect. I'm not saying this is you of course, but I am saying this is more often then not, the issue of something not working well.
@intellitechsonsite
@intellitechsonsite 3 года назад
@@Xerillion thanks for you candor. No offense taken. We are relatively new to Azure and WVD is only a year old as far as general release. My engineers do have decades of on premise experience. As mentioned previously we used Nerdio to build out the environments for us. As you know the first iteration of WVD was way more cumbersome to build from scratch. With the adoption of ARM we want to get those clients over ASAP. We aren't exactly sure how to get the necessary experience with various VM series and how they perform in different scenarios. From this vantage point its either ask the right people or build a lab and spend lots of time and $$. Trust me I have asked many, including Microsoft engineers, for advice on VM series options and have yet to get any consistency or clarity.

@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
@@fbifido2 Possibly, but it depends on how many sessions hosts you'll be using, how many concurrent users during peak demand, the apps you are using , and the bandwidth and latency of internet connections. In our practice currently, we are going to give Microsoft another 6 months to work on Teams video with WVD, and then try it again before we begin promoting it as a solution to clients and prospects. I know Microsoft will get it working good eventually but right now we only recommend audio/phone system through Teams on WVD, but not video conferencing. That being said - I totally advocate for you to get your proof of concept system setup and running at the current time so you can comfortable with it. Then later on, as Microsoft updates WVD and the Teams app for WVD, it will be an easy-ish process to swap out the VM instances and update Teams on the session hosts. To me, there is no doubt that issuing virtual computers to employees, with employees using personal devices or company issued thin clients is the future.

For the high-end graphic users you're comparing what looks like an NV6 VM featuring 6 vCPUs (6 cores) and 1/2 M60 GPU to 6 HP workstations featuring 4-24 cores and a full GPU each. How do you satisfy 6 users when one user can only use a single core on average and only one user gets access to the GPU? I'm using the exact same VMs for our virtual training environment - one VM per student - and it's not difficult to max out both vCPUs and GPU with a high-end 3D application...
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Hi Carsten. My example is a general one and I can't account the specifics of your lab environment, or the apps and their resource requirements and limitations ect. The goal here is to get IT managers thinking in the terms of cloud environments vs on-premise and working out the business justifications. From there you can plug in whatever applies to your specific situation. When we price these out for clients, we make our best experienced guess and the do a proof of concept and then tweak as required to suit the app and the performance requirements.
@fbifido2
@fbifido2 2 года назад
@1:58:18 - does this calculation factoring the instance type/size ??? an F4s_v2 = 4vCPU, with a 4:1 that's max 16 users per host, AAD users of 64 will work out to (64/16=4) host. a F8s_v2 = 8vCPU, 4:1 = 32 users, (64/32=2) host. a F16s_v2 =16vCPU, 4:1 = 64 users, 1 host. say 4 host with F8s_v2, 32 users per host, that's 128 users max, but you can't put 32 users on a F8s_v2, , maximum is ~12 users. the problem now is the cost + IOPs ??? Users per vCPU Ratio vRAM per User per Host IOPs per User per Host - none of Azure instance are balance, they are all High or Low, so it depends on the workload.

@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
No, it also comes with most subscriptions of Microsoft 365.

Is it save to trade stocks and run my platform? Cuz my internet is so slow and sometimes lagging
@Xerillion

Probably. Would just need to be tested with whatever platform you are using.

May i know how are we able to move AS400 application into Windows virtual Desktops?
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 2 года назад
Sure, though please setup a call with our team if you are in the US or Canada to discuss if it is feasible and what it would take. Giving a proper reply would take more than tapping up a short RU-vid reply. 👍

it shows 140fps but looks like less than 3fps.. what is the issue in the benchmark., also the CAD software looked like it was super sluggish.
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 2 года назад
Well, it's a matter of understanding what you are looking at. Prior to this, the benchmark wouldn't even start, and it is their entry system. So, if you compare it to your high end local PC, that wouldn't be a fair comparison. For those of us that have been watching this develop over the last 3-4 years, it's amazing. And even since this video, it has gotten much smoother.

@@Xerillion thanks but this wasn't my point. I am still confused why it is sluggish even though it should be as fluent as my German. ;)

Is Onedrive Sync in WVD considered under EGRES?
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
Not sure what you mean by "*under* EGRES".
@sarjeaa
@sarjeaa 3 года назад
Thanks for your response. When we copy data from WVD to OneDrive , is it considered as egress or outbound data transfer. If I am not wrong outbound data transfer is charged. So I was trying to understand if Copying or uploading to OneDrive will be charged in Azure
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
It wouldn't be charged.

What solution do you use for scaling in and out?
@Xerillion
@Xerillion 3 года назад
I mention it in the video: FSLogix.
@miken4022
@miken4022 3 года назад
@@Xerillion I was referring to scaling the host pool. I am only aware of FSLogix being used for profile management.

It is not that simple. To archive the same capacity, the cost of cloud based infrastructure can (and will) go up quickly -- most cloud advocates don't talk about it. In way less than 5 years, the total operation costs of on-premise and cloud will have little difference, and cloud is often more expensive. Simply put, big companies push cloud hard primarily because it is better for their balance sheet and income statement. Also, cloud won't mitigate risks --- unless you hand in all or most controls to the big names (i.e.: if you uses Azure AD DS, and no your own cloud AD DS at all). Risks are mainly an outcome of users, not products. Under the hood, cloud and on-premise have no difference at all: same products, same OS, same or similar software.

Hi Minghui. My company is 20 years old and the past 7 years we only implement and support Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365. When it comes to Azure, we have never had an issue with costs getting out of control because we train, certify, and spend lots of time on these systems in the real world. They work and cost exactly as I describe them in the video. In your case all you need is to get beyond not knowing what you don't know, and that starts with training, particularly a certification, then years of experience proposing, implementing and supporting these cloud systems.With that, the confidence will come.
