In this lesson we take a look at the strengths of Wing Chun Kung Fu and Pentjak Silat and show you how to combine them for even greater effectiveness. Silat is an Indonesian martial art that uses limb destructions to disable and neutralize an enemy, while Wing Chun tends to use flowing, sticking hands to bypass the limbs. Taking out an opponent's limb is a great way to end a fight quickly while staying out of harm's way. It also takes your enemy out of the fight without employing potentially lethal techniques. Fortunately for serious martial artists, you don't have to choose between sticking or destroying.
Here we show how to use the sticking-flowing method while destroying the limbs at the same time. By incorporating limb destruction techniques, even seasoned Wing Chun players will noticeably improve both their offense and defense. By experimenting with sticking hand methods, Silat players will find their destructions coming with greater ease and less effort. Martial artists of any style or system can readily implement either or both of these concepts to make their art more devastating and efficient.
The combination of Chinese Kung Fu and Indonesian Pentjak Silat is often called Kuntao Silat. Indonesian and Chinese martial arts have been mixing for centuries and as a result there are hundreds of different Kuntao Silat styles, each with a distinctly different flavor and set of influences.

First of all the ideas of Wing Chun and the destructive power of Silat Are my favorite combinations. What I saw in this video reminds me of the center line theory added with the muscle cutting I call" gunting " Basic limb destruction. I enjoy your videos I watch often Thank You.

Hi Tim! I have to agree with you. Silat and Wing Chun are my favorite systems or styles, and when I train, I like to combine them for the reasons you mentioned, like the gunting, which I first heard from Kali Eskrima Guros, and the "attack the center line" concept from Wing Chun. All I need now is a time machine to get my youth back, and I am good to go, Joking, lol. Have a great week and train safe. Take care!

what i like about silat is, during our training what is focused on in not punching or hitting the opponent, but more to breaking joints, breaking bone, attacking weak point, locking, etc2 :)

This is what I call "I'm closer to you, than you are to me". Your target is my core and my target is the limbs, so I am closer to target. Chasing hands is natural reaction, so turn it into thorny hands. Add Bagua and Bak Mei for part 2. Joe B. Pho Sat (The Iron Noodle)

As a Wing Chun student and self-defence instructor, I personally have an open mind. As Bruce Lee said, take what is useful and discard the rest. I am not sure personally if I would bother with trying to punch someone's fist but the forearm destruction stuff is great. It is good to have another view on everything. For everyone who is mocking, let's see your videos. Peace.

Just thought I'd share a few things here. Firstly, there already exists Silat-Wing Chun hybrids in Malaysia - and possibly in Indonesia too. They're quite refined, because they've been around since the 19th century (of the previous milennia, of course). Second, while it's true that Silat is rich with destruction moves, I think very few of them actually focus on debilitating the attacking limbs. Yes, it could be done, but very rarely, because authentic combat Silat seeks to end the fight as soon as possible, and unless you're using brass knuckles, it's unlikely that you could end the fight with it. There's also the fact that hands, forearms and feet could be toughened through training, making them even lower-yield targets. I'm sure you know that some people have naturally "sharp" knuckles and hard hands; hitting their hands could cause you to hurt yourself. Furthermore, quite a few Silat styles use very rapid strikes, and striking those strikes would take a high degree of skill and experience, making it an option only for high ranked fighters. All these reasons are why many Silat styles often choose to just immobilize attacking limbs and focus on the bigger weak spots that could better end the fight. Having said that, what you do in your dojo is up to you. I'm just throwing it out there so more people would know what the Silat options really are. But then again, there are many types of Silat, so I'm sure that there will be people who disagree with me. To each their own. Thank you for sharing.
@ClearMartialArts

+truebluekit Yes, because of the popularity of Wing Chun it's fairly easy to find hybrids of the system. Attacking the limbs is actually quite common in many Silat styles. It comes out of the emphasis on weapons work, where smashing or slicing up an opponents arms before they get within range to reach vital areas is often a preferred strategy.

What is the name of that hybrid?
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 8 лет назад
+Jr Kinabalu There is more than one. A version in Malaysia is Lian Padukan.
@truebluekit
@truebluekit 8 лет назад
Jr Kinabalu Lian Padukan is just one of the hybrids. Another is Silat Gerak Lian. Both of these (and quite a few others, I believe) were developed from an earlier silat, Buah Pukul Mersing, which in turn came from the direct teaching of a Yunan-style martial art, referred to as Lian Yunan by the locals. If I am not mistaken, Sarawak also has a Wing Chun - Silat hybrid.
@iisamsudin
@iisamsudin 6 лет назад
yup, silat lian padukan is one of the hybrids. Buah pukul Mersing is actually the original form of wing-chun. It was brought by a chinese Islamic scholar from yunan. Then it spreads to so many forms of hybrids.

wingchun and silat are good martial arts to study nowadays,..hand destruction of silat is very effective as defense at the same time offence, same as in wingchun,..but dont just say the silat is better than wingchun or wingchun is better than silat because there is a uniqueness in this two,..combine the two, then, the will be an awesome,terrible,amazing and most effective technique,..if you are a good martial artist you can appreciate all kinds of martial arts style not just stick to one technique,..collect then select and combine,..

Silat has many forms and some are dont even look alike, i do pencak silat and we never grab someones hand ro start bash on that. We and quickly, we move in and take down. Hitting that hand is unnecerry because you are not fighting the target. Its like a gunfight, you are not trying to stop the bullets you are trying to stop the gunner.

Zeger Bosch Yeah, Silat is one of the most diverse martial arts categories out there.The destructions principle is common to many silat and kuntao styles but certainly not all.In our system a common strategy is to destroy the closes most available target. Vital areas are the end goal but the opponent will usually have a lot of stuff in-between us and their vitals and those should be destroyed on the way to and through the opponent.This strategy comes from the bladed culture of these arts. Where even an opponent who has been mortally wounded can still do a lot of damage by simple flailing around with a blade. And we want to slice, smash and destroy anything that comes within reach before it gets withing range of our own vital areas.
@bushyzeeg
@bushyzeeg 9 лет назад
hey man! first of all. sorry for the grammar on my last comment. i dont know what was wrong with my keyboard. :P second! yes we use a same kind of principle but in this video the man is striking the hand multiple times in the same area. we dont do that. we hit the hand, and then we move on to the arm, and then the upper arm, shoulder, neck and then boom in the face. this also comes from bladed froms and sometimes we even practice with (ofcourse dull, training.) blades.

Hi Zeger! I liked your response. I was student of Pencak Silat Mande Muda for 12 years, and a student of Pentjak Silat Bukti Negara, later Pentjak Silat Serak, so I know what you mean. For a short while I found a Guru of Kuntao, and that system emphasized the destructions described by Sifu Clear. Of course, you were right, Zeger, when you said there are many forms of Silat, because there are. Good point. I studied Wing Chun before discovering Silat, so, I like to practice all the arts mentioned. Keep training, and take care!

People who are comparing muay thai and silat are making a bad comparison. Silatis combat martial arts are ment to work in life or death situations usually in silat and other combat forms you will pull a knife or weapon. Where muay thai is sports martial arts based ment fighting under specific rules and usually less gruesome and violent. A better comparison would be silat and muay boran that way you are comparing both combat martial arts. For people saying why isn't Silat in UFC if you were able to pull a weapon it would be. Look at the silat movements and imagine a knife in hand like a karambit and the hand and forearm destruction makes more sense. Just my two cents.

@jogmesson
@jogmesson 8 лет назад
no, im pretty sure that silat main point is hand to hand fight. i knew it becuz im from the place where silat is grown, the old people in my hometown is somewhat really scary, becuz they can end a fight within a second, i once seen a spar between two silatist master who master different style, its between silek tuo (old silat) and silek harimau (tiger style silat), when the spar begin and a few second later its ended, becuz the tiger style master just got his arm broke and its pretty hard to see that broken hand, man, that scary, lol. and i think the another reason why silat doent appeared in ufc bcuz the fighter body its not good.
@cameronetherington6243
@cameronetherington6243 8 лет назад
+Akram Ulf Blaze I have looked into silat more in depth it is a strong system but the saying it's too deadly too violent is an excuse. All of the fighting styles out there are deadly and are violent because they had to be.

guys from a personal point of view, i am a strong advocate of wing chun, no matter what anyone says- it is a womans style, lacks power, blah blah... i can honestly say it worked for me... i have experience in other styles too, but wing chun is a class apart..its movements and physics and principles are immaculate and i must say it was devised by a true genius. it is simple. extremely practical and straightforward when it comes to a fight... i have fought guys from other styles and i find it to be very effective. anyway thats just my opinion.

I actually love the fact that there is a large number of people who doubt Wing Chun cos it lures people into a false sense of security. I train at a Muay Thai gym and I love seeing people's reactions when they are sparring with me and I use Wing Chun techniques completely throws them :-) I actually got asked by one guy to stop punching him in the face lol The guys at that gym definitely respect WC cos they can see it works when taught properly and I am so lucky to have a great teacher who is qualified to teach both
@joelvis65
@joelvis65 9 лет назад
whitehaireddevil1 I agree that in some cases, after being taught by a bad instructor, some people fail to spar properly and effectively.. what you have to understand is wing chun is a close quarter combat art.. Its strength lies there and it it doesnt do so well against long range combat styles like muay thai. I mean we do have techniques but they require a great deal of timing and accuracy. Muay thai on the other hand thrives on long range attacks.. ive sparred with some muay thai guys and ive found it to be remarkable how they can throw a punch from a condiderable distance by leaning into it.. However wing chun is very deceptive as it uses a lot of angling and counters..
@Robert-rl7rd
@Robert-rl7rd 9 лет назад
I agree mostly with what you're saying but I don't agree that it doesn't do so well against long range combat styles as experience has shown me that it can. A style is only as good as its practitioner. If people can't make it effective it is their own fault
@joelvis65
@joelvis65 9 лет назад
whitehaireddevil1 Good point, but every style no matter which one has strengths and weaknesses.. Some styles were developed to compensate the weaknesses of others. No style is a 100% complete. If you analyze the 3 forms of wing chun : siu lim tao, chum kiu and biu jee", the cover almost all the important points of combat.. siu lim tao deals with basic punching, angling, blocks and parries, chum kiu makes use of the elbows, punches and knees and finally biu jee has pressure point strikes. As far as long range goes, wing chun was developed by a woman. Now if you analyze the style, it works best for people with a smaller frame, and its main focus is short range. and if you see its kicks, most of them are parries, which are used to hold an opponent back or to stop a kick. Wing chun just has one high kick and most of the kicks are mid range and below the belt. And yes i agree it depends on the practitioner, a person who is considerably larger can do better at long range than a person with a small build.

It actually depends on the school of the Silat you're using. There are some that will target the lower body parts and do takedowns instead of destructions like the Silat Harimau school. But the main principal of Silat is pretty much the same in every school, kill or maim your opponent as fast as you can. Doing destructions to the hands or arms is a slow process. I prefer to attack the joints instead.
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 8 лет назад
Yes, we practice joint destructions and takedowns as well. This video is more about getting a "two for one" shot on the limbs while slipping past them. It is about how to add Silat principles to Wing Chun fighting methods, and a demonstration that it doesn't have to be an either-or proposition.
@Tocha_official
@Tocha_official 8 лет назад
I see. I understand what you're trying to do. But if I may suggest something. As I've mentioned, Silat's principle first and foremost is to kill or maim the opponent as fast as possible. So if you want to add Silat principles to another kind of MA by doing ineffective and slow destructions, it kind of loses its purpose. If you get what I mean. You might consider the specific targets that are more vulnerable, like thumb, pinky finger or wrist for example.
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 8 лет назад
We do all of those things, too. It just depends on the situation. The one thing you definitely do NOT want in Silat is to go chasing targets that have not presented themselves. A smart Silat player will use such "targets" as bait, and if you chase them you will likely be killed. The destructions we show here are neither ineffective nor slow for a properly trained Silat practitioner. This method is highly effective for skilled Silat fighters, and there are many styles that use this method. Like any other technique, it should be one weapon in your arsenal, and you should have many more tools at your disposal so that you can be appropriately responsive to the situation at hand.
@Tocha_official
@Tocha_official 8 лет назад
You know, after watching the video again, actually what you are doing is the same with what I had in mind. You were saying to target the fist, wrist or arm. Dunno why I only remembered the arm part and thus I was thinking "man, that was so wrong!". My bad. Arms are tough and hard to break. And would make a bad target. I would prefer the first two of what you were mentioning, the fist (or specifically the fingers) or the wrist. And yeah, I do agree that a good Silat practitioner wouldn't go around chasing anything. The mindset of any Silat pendekar should be 1-2 hits to make the opponent cripple or dead.
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 8 лет назад
Yep, we do all that and more! Fingers, wrists, and elbows are definitely easier to break than forearms, but anyone past Phase 2 of our Silat program can break a forearm on first contact (with a hit, not a leverage break). Even if you can't do that yet, never underestimate the power of a wicked charlie horse! It may only buy you a second or two, but for a skilled Silat player that is all it should take to end the fight.

Thumbs up. :) Having studied Shaolin along with some Kali, I can see the Kali influence here in the Silat ("defanging the snake" as we used to call it). I've actually used this technique to end a fight by breaking both my attackers hands. Fast and efficient, and as you said, doesn't require getting PAST the weapons, just requires you break them. This is something no opponent ever seems to expect. From my Shaolin, I learned to attack the back of the hand or the inside of the forearm with the *edge* of my hand as well. It causes less initial damage, but provides a more natural angle that allows me to flow straight to controlling the arm and dragging them my preferred range (up close for short punches, elbows and gouges, chokes, etc, (Muay Thai, jiujitsu and kung fu range). I'm a big fan of staying in contact with an opponent until they're down.

Kali and SIlat come from the same branch of the martial art family, which is why they look similar. I studied both, and I often got confused at which one I was doing they were so similar. In the southern Philippines, they actually call it Silat not Kali. Most Filipinos wouldn't know what you were talking about if you said Kali. In the north it's either Arnis or Escrima.

Why do you think Sifu Dan was so drawn to Silat? Because it was so close to Kali. Gunting, (defanging the snake), runs prevalent to both styles. To learn is to be open to learning. To try to lock any style into any category, (much less this is better than that), it to miss the point. I studied Juan Fan for years. Not because I thought it was better, but because the overall philosophy allowed me to explore and grow, (which makes me better).

I am an Indonesian , the origin country of Pencak Silat . The philosophy of Pencak Silat is never to destroy . Pencak silat comes from two words ,Pencak = to dodge and silat = to Fend . The philosophy is never use the strength to hurt others , even when they attack you . the sacred purpose of pencak silat is not to get hurt by others ,and not hurt others with your strength. There are thousands style of Pencak silat . every region has their own style , for example the tiger style of Pencak Silat from Jambi or Padang is completely different with the style of Maduranese or the snake style of balinese. This difference is due to the local wisdom they have . i am proud that pencak silat is now well known among western countries . But, before learning pencak silat , please do remember one thing : Pencak silat is to defend your self, never use it to hurt others.

Can you imagine what will happen if you're hit with those kind of precision? complete destruction. I also doubt that at first. Wait until you see the masters yourself. a lot of miss opportunity. I like when he said that. Shows you how technical silat is and they're not all about shows, jumping here and there wasting energy. you got a chance to finish a fight within sec and you do it. that's why he's teaching destroying the opponent arms even before you get in his face. i remember testing this theory of using defend as a form of attacking by asking my friend to try and kick me. i purposely 'stop it' with my palm to his in-step. he couldn't continue after that. another time, i was helping my friend train for his tkd tournament and i 'accidently' defend with my elbow. his pretty big and strong kicks but again, the harder his kick, the harder my defend and he scolded me because, his leg was swollen. lol.

This is old, but, the IDEA behind Wing Chun is not to all out strike your opponent but to cover the space. Maintain control of the center line between both bodies. That's what makes it great. But regardless, its not the Martial Art, its the mentally and skill of the Martial Artist that wins fights.

The reason I practice Wing Chung , is I like the destructive aspects of the blows. If you break a combatant arm or knee, hit their xyphoid process or windpipe, you are going to have a better escape chance, without all the action in Silat. Just my humble opinion 🙏🏻

Yes, sometimes synthesizing concepts works out for the good, if they are smart concepts and they are easily compatible with each other in application. We've not seen Jeet Kune Do players emphasize limb destructions among their techniques, but it is certainly within the abilities and loose parameters of the system to do so, and we hope to get more martial artists of all styles thinking a little more like this.

Yes of course, I had forgotten the strong emphasis on FMA in later lineages, particularly through Inosanto. Even Vunak loved using the sticks as training tools. As you can see from the video here, the Silat method tends to be quite a bit different than the Filipino styles in practice.

clear internal martial arts. How do you apply silat or wing chun techniques when facing a Muay Thai or kick boxing opponent? Tks.
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 7 лет назад
That is a broad subject and there is no easy answer. As always, it depends on what your opponent is doing. Silat comes from Indonesia and Malaysia, which are both very near Thailand (Malaysia shares a border with it). Most Silat styles are very good at defending against these types of attackers simply because they had to be. If you diligently work through Phase 1 of our Silat program, you should have a strong enough foundation to deal with most kick boxers including Thai fighters. www.clearsilat.com/silat-dvd

In tjimandi a vilage in indonesie breaking the atm is the norm even in training. In the past evrrybody who wanted to do tjimsndi got his arm brojen. But they are vrry good at repairing the arm. A tjimandi fighter will break your arm. For him that is natural.

i see a lot of comments about the basic probability of punching a fist coming at you. some of the coupling motions can train you to increase the probability of contact fist to fist. for example when you make a parrying motion instead of going for the potential opening to the head or body we immediately create, rather strike where you direct the opponents strike to be. i imagine it can be as fluid as grappling a strike if timed correctly and close to as probable.......... good vid

I don't train traditional Wing Tsun, because it's frankly not very effective on its own. I train a hybrid between Wing Tsun and Kickboxing, so I get the point you make about mixing the arts together. I do however doubt that you can break limbs and hands that easily, especially in the heat of a unexpected fight and if you were to "only" injure him lightly. He wouldn't notice with adrenaline running in his blood.
@theshaw2000
@theshaw2000 10 лет назад
I don't believe he is trying to imply that you rely on breaking a limb. It could happen, it likely may not. However, you could still hurt the arms and hands enough that it wears him down and demoralizes him if the fight were to drag on. Obviously, he is showing that you make your way in and still go for head shots. He's saying, destroy what is given to you. Also, obviously one would have to train this to where it becomes muscle memory and you don't have to think about it, just like with any good fighting method.
@pw6titanium

striking arms, wrists, hands is very effective even for girls like me...you can even shock the nervous system without having to break things( percussive palm )... opponents with their hands down for just half a second or less is enough time to cave their face in . I like smashing guys teeth in....you should see the look of disbelief on their faces!!

The destruction technique you demonstrate is probably from the cimande discipline. There are various discipline of pencak silat in Indonesia, and the only one I know who would train their bone to be as hard as a steel is the cimande discipline. Other would probably use submissions and takedowns instead rather than breaking their opponents bone head on

wing chun and silat has similar CORE. Wing chun called it "chi" and pencak silat called it "tenaga dalam". It's gained from breathing exercise methods. Both of them has different methods of breathing exercise. The amount of chi or tenaga dalam gained is the essence of both combat arts. Both Wing chun and silat teaches compassion and being modest above all things, but if our lives been threatened then the only way is fight to kill those who threaten our lives as quick as possible

So would Silat and wing chun almost be opposite arts? I'm a new practitioner of wing chun and we use limbs primarily to get into the center (vital organs/neck/head) rather than attacking the limbs themselves. Where as Silat seems to almost do the complete opposite? Is that correct?
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 7 лет назад
Silat uses the limbs to get to the center but destroys them as it does so.
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 7 лет назад
I definitely wouldn't say that they are opposites. If you look at a Wing Chun wooden dummy form practiced in the air, it tends to look a lot like Silat. However, Silat comes from a highly bladed culture. Those fighters had to assume that their opponent had a knife, even if they couldn't see it. They couldn't afford to waste any time fooling with limbs waiting for a sweeter shot to present itself. Instead, Silat destroys the limbs on the way into the center, which also destroys their ability to use a knife.

Hi , my name is Andre and I study Silat Perisai diri for 20 years in Indonesia and Australia . My thoughts to this demonstration is quite simple . If you put a knife into your opponents hands do you still want to hit it ..? Regarding WC or Silat technics I believe if you train either one of them everyday your skill level will be high ( because your reflex will increase ) but thinking to have all the answers if getting attacked could be fatal . Sadly a lot of people train attacking but neglect avoiding . It takes me an hour to teach someone how to attack lethal but avoid an surprising attack could take a long time . Principle is if you avoid inside of your opponent destroy at the same time . If you manage to avoid outside of an opponent immobilise him at the same time . Hehe we don't want to kill him yet . Martial arts in all it's essence never supports the strong but is fitted for the week . Or we all have to be UFC fighters . WC and most martial arts are based on light ,flowing and fast technics ( speed brings velocity and that generates POWER ) that's why women so good at it and in realty the most dangerous . I hope most off you guys will agree . Cheers andre
@ClearMartialArts
@ClearMartialArts 9 лет назад
Andre Meyer That's exactly right. Much of the martial arts in the US is built around a fistfighitng / sport mindset and ignores the realities of self defense. It's very important to make sure that knives, sticks and guns are a regular part of you training and are fluidly integrated with all your hand to hand work.
