Winter Winnipeg Walking Video 8!
Started at Broadway and Main Street, then wandered along Main Street, through downtown Winnipeg, and back along King Street, enjoying some of the west Exchange District on the way back to Broadway.
Got stopped by a traveller from Calgary that had some great questions, none of which we had the answers to! A historian I am not!! Haha.
Some places we passed by: the Manitoba Club, Union Station, VJ’s Drive In, Johnny G’s, Modern Electric Lunch, Times Chang’d, Portage and Main, Parlour Coffee, Community Gym, Pantages Theatre, Centennial Concert Hall, Planetarium, Manitoba Museum, Donair Guys, Sk8, United Way, Chinatown, the Dynasty Building, Red River College Campus, Miss Browns, City Hall, Old Market Square, the Cube, Peasant Cookery, Bodegoes, Amsterdam Tea Room, Lark, the Haberdashery, Saint, the Albert Hotel, ShawarmaKhan, the Pyramid Cabaret, the Hotel Fort Garry.
And as in nearly all my videos, art abounds in Winnipeg’s downtown/Exchange District. How lucky are we!?!?

Wow! I'm from Toronto and lived in Winnipeg from 82 to 89. Main Street sure has changed. I'm blown away by the condos and revitalization that's happened down there. I worked in the Commodity Exchange tower and I used to take a bus from Inkster and Keewatin, back when that area was new. Thanks for the memories and for showing me how the city has changed. Winnipeg will always have a place in my heart.

This reminded me of the many years I spent in Winnipeg growing up. I’ve been in many of those building you walked past on Main Street and also Notre Dame. Some of those old building I could almost smell the mustiness. They mostly lacked good ventilation inside and usually had boilers providing radiator heat. One time many years ago almost all of the core area was heated by a underground core City boiler system providing heat to many buildings in and around the Exchange District.

A lot nicer on main from when I lived there in the mid-seventies. Mostly run down beer parlours and greasy spoons north of the museum and planetarium. The good ole hug n slugs as we used to say. LOL

The Bankruptcy and Final Closing of EATON’s Downtown in 1999 was the nail in the coffin for Downtown . And the failure of Portage Place Mall. When I was a Little Girl my Mom Worked at EATON’s Downtown for 28years. In the 1970s& 1980s Winnipeg Downtown was vibrant and Exciting . Many Store , Restaurants and Movie Theatres were all Downtown . Also Nightlife. In the 1990s that started to slide . Today in 2024 it’s not so good anymore .

I grew up in the Peg during the 70's -80's when there was still some life in downtown. Things started going downhill after the opening of Portage Place where the life was sucked off the street. White flight killed downtown like many US cities where you had the donut effect. People had all their needs met in the suburbs and no longer needed to go downtown. One of the saddest crimes was the tearing down of Eaton's department store. Our controllers always re writing his story.
@1EagleDave

your so right portage was nothing but a drug infested place even on a good day and i was also there when they ripped eatons out of there my great grandmother immigrated from england to halifax then onto wpg where she washed floors in there and because of needing money for the family my grandmother felt bad that she was the only one in the family making money at the time that she quit grade 11 to get on her hands and knees to help her that was living back then. i do know and remember winterpeg very well. it's not as good as some might think .trust me on this.

I peg the last straw as the closing of Hudson's Bay...but the end of Eatons for sure kicked off the downhill slide.

@@markanthony3275I still cannot believe they closed that Bay store. I loved going down there. I worked for a time at 333 Maryland which was the WCB at the time and I used to go to that store all the time.
@markanthony3275
@markanthony3275 3 месяца назад
@@BunnyTheChi WCB almost right on the corner of Portage and Maryland? I used to pass by there all the time when I was going to trade school and residing at the luxurious Alf Holl Court apartment block about 200 yards north of WCB on Maryland...back in the early 80's LOL. I did go to the downtown Bay when I had a doctor's appointment at the Winnipeg Clinic right by the Bay Parkade probably about ten years ago. It was sad, there was only two floors of store left. I just wanted to see the fur trade murals above the elevators on the first floor one last time. I talked to a cashier who pointed out all the crappy impossible to sell merchandise that was collecting dust in display cases. She said they deliberately sabotaged the store by stocking it with merchandise they knew nobody would buy...and use that as a pretext to close it. Too bad! And now they are turning Winnipeg into one big urban reserve by handing them all these historic properties downtown. Now it's a haven for bums.When Winnipeg begin to refuse to spray for weeds and dandelions, that was a metaphor for the weeds taking over the city...weeds ...if you know what I mean!

Winnipeg resident here. It’s not always brutally cold in January. While it can be -40 C we can also have days of near zero or slightly above as well. Judging from how the snow looks in this video and the melt water on the streets this was a mild winter day for Winnipeg.

Wpg downtown lacks condos downtown like many other big cities. Just relying on daytime business crowds is not enough to support good businesses. If there were more condos and people at night, perhaps Wpg downtown can be saved.
@KarlHeinzofWpg
@KarlHeinzofWpg 2 года назад
Oh Winnipeg downtown doesn't need to be saved. I've lived in the Exchange for 15 years now, before that I lived near UofW for a few years. Downtown has always had a solid community with lots of food, art, music, bars and 'life', it just wasn't open and accessible to the vast majority of Winnipegers who know nothing about it. But you're right that we need more condos. Luckily that's been improving steadily for about 10 years now. Almost all of the East Exchange is condos with more coming every year, and more are planned for the West Exchange along with other investment from UofM and RRC. So downtown is doing great and will becoming even better with each passing year.

If they had a mayor that wasn't scared to say that natives are causing a crime wave, there might have been some hope. I know people on the Police force...almost every incident they respond to downtown and in the North End is a native problem.
