Winter Lure Fishing | Pollack on Soft Plastics | Techniques and Tackle

This is my 3rd session of the year (March 2020).
The wind had finally died down, so I took a last-minute day off work and headed to my usual winter lure fishing mark to find a pollack or two.
Despite a flat tyre and some camera issues I had an enjoyable 3-hour session with a couple of fish landed.
I chat about the tackle I use and the lure fishing techniques I use to catch one of the hardest fighting fish in the North Sea.
Hope you enjoy & Tight Lines

Hi Slippy. I have been watching a few of your videos, and would just like to say Thank you for the tips and info you give regarding the tackle set up and techniques you use. I usually beach cast from the beach, but have just started lure fishing, so am finding your videos very informative. Thanks again, and please be safe on those rocks.

Wish I was 30 years younger, I might tackle these climbs! Another great vid. Been float and lure fishing for last 3 months, caught 30+ on lures, only 2 on float. Usually up here it’s the other way round, blame it on the harsh frosts this year, and chopper than normal seas. Hopefully a bit of warmth will improve things🤞🏽

I think you're right about the cold weather, it's been the coldest April for 100 years and I think it's pushed everything back a month. This warm bankholiday should help to bring it back in line I think.

Eyup fella. It's always an education so thanks for explaining some more details. Do you fish with braid? Using it can make a huge difference and helps get an understanding of the seabed your fishing. It's a fair bit cheaper than a new rod too. Keep up the stellar work and, who knows, you might be able to get a hair cut soon ☺ Tight lines fella!
@davedawson9851

@@SlippyLimpets I do use braid and for that very reason - you can get a mental map of the bottom after a while. I use an 8ft Bushwhacker which is a bit too stiff especially for plastics I think. It'll be new Aussie braid for my Birthday this year. Let's hope I get to use it. Sithi after, Dave
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 4 года назад
I used to use a bushy, until I snapped it, and I know what you mean about the tip, it does lack bit of sensitivity. If you're after a sensitive rod then the Japanese brands tend to have an abundance of it, Major Craft is a brand worth checking out if you don't want to spend too much and they're easy to get hold of. The aussie braid is awesome stuff, I just got a 400 meter spool delivered for about 55 quid! Check out Busted fishing, they sell it in any length you like. Stay safe Dave

@@SlippyLimpets Thanks for getting back to me - I'll have a look at Major Craft and I'm definitely in for the Aussie braid. My brother in law lives in Oz - I got a cheap leftie Ambassador from him a few years ago 'cos I'm a southpaw fisherman - not left handed, just a bit odd with multipliers. Mebbe I'll get a few bucks off - skinflint I am! Cheers fella, Dave

Another great video as usual. Last year me and my brother got all the way down the cliff to 'the step-over' and our bottle crashed at the final hurdle...lol....we were gutted. We just couldn't take that jump over to the rock...so close...lol. Done so well getting down to the bloody thing in the first place...its a hell of a climb....terrifying when you stand at the top and look down....all the way down and back up again for nowt... One of the best RU-vid fishing channels in my opinion! Great video. Do you find you need to be in fairly deep water to catch decent size Pollack?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 4 года назад
Depends on the time of year, in winter they tend to be in the deeper water but they move up to shallower, kelpy ground in late summer. Thanks for your comment, much appreciated 👍 🎣

Loved the video, I have watched a load of yours lately and they are very enjoyable, thanks for sharing. I wanted to add something useful too, you're 'high-sticking' your rod when playing the fish at times, it's likely you'll do your tip at those angles. A lot of guys find out the hard way.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 4 года назад
Thanks for the tip 👍 It's a bad habbit I picked up from fly fishing and I only do it deep water. I know its risky (tackle wise) but find it useful to get extra leverage on a fish when it's heading for structure, especially beneath my feet. It's partly why I use a softer tiped rod, helps ease the fear of it breaking. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Tight lines 👍 🎣

Does lure fishing in in the winter work well?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 3 года назад
It's definitely tougher fishing in the winter. Traditionally most people pack their lure tackle away for the winter but I've found that, although I don't catch as many fish i the winter, the fish i catch are bigger.

It's a pretty tough area to fish but there are a couple of easier marks- one at the end of the harbour and one beneath the light house on the head it's self. Head to the little car park to the north of the lighthouse and follow the cliff edge path north, it doubles back to under the lighthouse and there's a pretty well defined path down. Hope this helps and you have a good trip.

@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 4 года назад
Hey Shaun, when you're fishing these marks the main things are to keep your lure as close to the sea bed as possible and find where the underwater structure and weed is. Fishing with braid will help you create a mental image of the area you're fishing, and because bites can be really subtle even from the biggest fish, will help bite detection. Fishing around this area can be hit or miss, but if you do get one, it's likely to be a good one. Hope this helps
