Winter planting of summer cutting | 4 month timelapse rooting Japanese Maples

The process of taking cuttings can take a while. I have taken lots of cuttings in early spring but in summer I usually do not take cuttings. So I decided to take rough bark Japanese maple (Acer palmatum 'arakawa') cuttings at the peak of summer. Now, in early winter, I am taking a look at the outcome and draw some conclusions on the optimal size for Japanese maple cuttings, and timing them.

Your percentages and results are what I have experienced. Found that I had to wait a few years before they became viable pre-bonsai. Going to make a forest/grouping out of them this year. Maybe even a Penjing design. OH the potentials of cuttings. Keep them coming my friend.

:) Yeah, for trident, I prefer seeds to be honest. BUUT.. If you have a nice variety, cuttings is also a good thing to master. As you say, cuttings can take a but of time to really start going!

I counted a little the number of cuttings and nodes. As I see in your experiment you had about 9 cuttings with 1 or 2 nodes and about 7 or so with 3 or 4. And that more than 50% of the cuttings were rooted with 1 or 2 nodes and so far one of the ones with 3 or more. It's quite an interesting result for me. Thanks for sharing it!
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
It was a bit of a surprise to me too to be honest. I always thought 2-3 nodes was best. It seems that just 1 ode did really well too.

Nice video on cuttings - I take most of my cuttings in winter as hard wood cuttings, have great success with them in spring, my success with summer cuttings is very poor due to my climate- gets way to hot the cuttings just can’t handle it! P.S. never to many propagation videos, it one of the top questions I get.

If you take a look at the video Xavier and I did on rooting trident maple cuttings (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RlQCkFsukBA.html) he challenged me for hardwood cuttings. Yes thank you for a well instructed and video presentation. I always wonder whether the rooting hormone doesn’t get pushed off when you insert the cutting into the substrate. Would it be better to use a skewer or chopstick to make a hole first and then insert the cutting and firm up the soil after.

Thanks for this Jelle. Very informative. I'm using powdered rooting hormone but do you know for how many years that stays viable before it's useless? I will try and find myself some jelly rooting compound for the Spring. 👍👍
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
I don't I am afraid. Does it have a sell by date? I have powdered hormone too, which I have been using for a long time, untill I rand into the jelly. The jelly turns very runny after 1-2 years which is when I replace it.

Those are gorgeous cuttings, Jelle. Great they‘ve made it. Mine look good as well. I guess the best time to sort them out for me will be in spring? As I‘ve put all of them together in one pot. 🤔 Maybe just keep them growing in a clump style. 😊 By the way: How about singing?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
Yeah, regular repotting period for maples is best. I do some things out of season to show how things are done, not per se while it is the best time of year (So that viewers have the info when the season is right). I need to be more explicit about that I suppose.

Hi Jelle, great video once again. Do you have experience with Arakawa cuttings? My bonsai teacher said Arakwas are quite weak trees (e.g. don’t respond well to full defoliation, frost, etc.) but especially so when on their own roots rather than being grafted. Something to consider!

@GrowingBonsai Год назад
Yes I do! I have been taking them for a bit now, and my mature arakawas are on their own roots too. I suppose I would say.. Take a look at the video that comes out later this week, on winter protection of bonsai. Somewhere I have some info on arakawa :)
