Winter is upon us and I have run in to a few challenges in my campervan already. This is my first winter in this van build so there has been a few teething issues - note these clips were filmed over the past few weeks and have all since been sorted / in the process of being sorted. Although I have been slow at whipping these clips together, I still wanted to share them with you guys so you can see that van life isn’t all about beautiful views and awesome park ups.
I’m not trying to shine a bad light on this lifestyle, I absolutely love it regardless of the challenges. I just made a promise to myself that I would document the absolute truth of van life, the good and the bad and this is what this vlog is!
Anyway, so in today’s vlog, we say RIP to my battery, come to terms with the fact there is always something to fix in a van build and have a little chat about corona virus.
I hope you have all been staying safe and enjoy the vlog! Don’t forget to like, subscribe and turn your notifications on and if you’re feeling super generous share it on your socials!
Thanks a million for watching and see you soon!

Lag the gas pipe in the van, where the mould is, use the lagging that plumbers use to lag pipes for winter freezing. Gas coming into the van is very cold if your van us warmer than the gas in the pipe you will get condensation forming.

You can get good mould cleaning spray from somewhere like B & Q once the pipes are sorted. ;)

This advice is absolutely right the condensation arrives on the cold pipe and then the dampness from that is affecting your gear you also really need to ventilate so the air can flow around it and not stuff too much stuff so that there is nowhere around it

Or the kind of rock salt used for non-slip on sidewalks in icy conditions (i used this for a grow room). But heck, a dehumidifier would work too. They make some that can charge I believe and be portable that are really decent, I think they are white with a purple tray underneath, no bigger than a basketball.

Fantastic Fan on the roof. You need ventilation. In vest on a Chinese diesel heater. It is dry heat. The small propane heaters produce alot of Moisture.

Human breath, heaters generates moisture on the inside of RVs, condenses on windows and metal surfaces, catalytic heaters create less moisture than other propane heaters, electric blankets are an alternative, and electric cookers better than propane, I had all those issues, enjoy your freedom, great channel

The best solution may be to perform regular check ups on your stuff, wiping it over every week or so in the winter to prevent build up. If possible, spread your stuff out - mold loves to grow in tight and confined spaces..
@Russellbeta
@Russellbeta 3 года назад
Damp and mold is hazardous for your health. Don't wait until you get respiratory problems before installing adequate ventilation. Anti mold paint isn't enough to solve this. You need to get the moisture levels under control. It's not terrible if things get damp when you have enough air circulation to dry it out. Most houses built around here have basements that constantly absorb water but the continuous airflow through them keeps the mold at bay. In any case it's a good idea to open up all the doors regularly on dry days to let everything dry out properly.

@DS-cf1zc 3 года назад
I agree with others about using dense tape around your gas pipe. That would help reduce the risk of mould, but then I would also remove the plastic Ivy. It is a moisture trap. I fully understand the battery challenges, I am still testing the battery expectancy in my van, but one of the things I have up my sleeve is that I will fit a second battery. This will run along side the original, I think it is called running in series. So you have twice the capacity. Your diesel heater will hammer the battery - so rather than expect being hot, my wife uses an Oodie, and I have a thermal poncho that I use in addition to things like a Duvalay. Combined, with a heater running at say 19-20 degrees periodically, should allow you to remain warm, but also protect your battery life. keep going, you are learning life skills so few have today.

Please read ⚠️ Hi everyone! I have to say you are all just so awesome, the amount of help and tips you have all given on this vlog is just amazing! So I thought I'd give you an overall update on what the plans are which these issues. Mould - I have 3 windows and a drop vent in the garage for ventilation. I have bought dehumidifier pot things and placed one in the garage and the cab. I keep the front window open 24/7 and the side window open when I'm in there and I have removed my jacket coat collection from the back hoping this creates a better air flow down there. I have also replaced all wood that had mould on it - I ripped my van part to check everything and pieced it all back together (sorry I didn't document it, I was doing it after work in the dark with a head torch on so you wouldn't have been able to see anything). I have also lagged the pipes, thank you for this tip and removed the foliage from the back of my van and replaced it with 4 way stretch carpet. So as of 21/12/2020 I have been mould free 😁 Battery - I was awaiting on the lithium ion battery to come back in stock however in the mean time I have been borrowing a friends 120ah AGM and it has been sufficient enough. Therefore I think I will stick to this for now 😊. Everything else - all fine and dandy, once again thanks a million you awesome bunch! 🥰

Lithium iron phosphate is perfect for the UK or Ireland where I am as we don't get many below freezing days per year, plus now you've got your heater just raise it off the floor with small lathes to let the air flow underneath and locate it close by your fridge compressor which will always be giving off a small amount of warmth 👍
@keefbrown

Check your inverter or charger is suitable for lithium - it has a different profile from agm, you may be able to look for lead carbon monoblocs which use the same charge profile as agm - Also your voltage is very low on a 12v battery, you’ve been discharging it too far. Lithium is normally able to discharge to 95% DoD - look for 12v monoblocs suitable for electric vehicles like floor cleaners rather than leisure batteries.

I have 2 x 68aH Lifos in our van. They’re very good and available in North Wales (Tayna Batteries). As said make sure your solar charger is set for lithium and your split charger is compatible. Lifos do not require specific lithium chargers and are Bluetooth compatible with a monitoring app. Just a thought.
@Dan-LS
@Dan-LS 3 года назад
I would consider a LiFePO4 battery with Bluetooth and a good BMS (Battery Management System). With the Bluetooth you will have full control how much the battery is charging or you using. Like this Picture: sunlux.se/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/app.jpg OK, not so good to charge the LiFePO4 in minus degrees, but it still ok at a low charge speed. Maybe solar panel not give so much at winter so it would be ok. Anyway, the BSM will turn off the charge if it would hurt the battery. And how often do you have minus degrees inside. Also the BMS will also turn off if you use too much capacity of the battery. With LiFePO4 you can use 95%+ (best of course not use max all the time) , with a "normal battery" only 50%. If you have a AGM/GEL, you need a battery protector so you not use more than 50%, or the battery will die fast. www.victronenergy.com/battery_protect For the LiFePO4 you need an DC-DC charger, but it good to use with all batteries, with just a battery separator it will never be charged to 100%. DC-DC Chargers: CTEK D250SE (SE = LiFePO4 version) €270 Charge rate 20A, Build in MPPT Solar Charge controller (Max 23v) www.ctek.com/uk/products/leisure-sport/d250se Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A Non-Isolated €230 Charge rate 30A, (But I read it get very very HOT!), Have Bluetooth for settings www.victronenergy.com/dc-dc-converters/orion-tr-smart-non-isolated LiFePO4 2x Longer life span Faster Recharge (Possible to fast-charge 1-2hrs vs 12-16hrs to 100%) Lightweight, about 1/4 less 2x Useful Capacity, 95% vs 50% 1x LiFePO4 battery = 8x AGM batteries (x2 capacity x4 times longer life) 10,5kg vs 42,3kg (83Ah LiFePO4 10,5kg = 160Ah AGM 42,3kg) OK, it expensive at start, 83Ah is around €830. But it’s your home 😊

I am converting T6. Diesel heaters use 12amps plus for five minutes when starting and stopping. They use 3amps when just ticking over. My 150watt solar panel generates a 1amp maximum for only a couple of hours this time of the year on a good day. My new 110ah Leoch leisure battery does not hold anywhere near 110ah. I love the honesty and practical view point of your RU-vid.

People have already given good advice about mould issues, pipe insulation for gas pipe, store stuff in sealed plastic containers make sure dry first, and try get better ventilation around the inside back of van, also any metal parts will be cold and become damp from your breathing to cause condensation, I wish I was brave enough to take that leap into van life, keep it up and happy new year 2021

The gas pipe will be the coldest thing in the van so it will get condensation on it and drip it needs a little bit of water pipe insulation around it and a little ventilation too and you’ll be ok

I lived in vans and housetrucks for 10yrs, in sunny NZ. There to much advise I could give you for the comment section. Others are right in that its lack of ventilation, so remove obstacles like cupboard doors and raise your mattress during the day. Make some small vents down low that you can open during the day and close at night, and a kids paddle pool and solar shower and you have created a indoor bathroom.. ha ha . Take care

Hi Nic, Ok so here is your prob I'm sure. I am a retired gas and building control engineer. I have restored countless (damp) houses and vehicles too, since older vehicles are a big hobby of mine. Gas pipe is not causing the mould. When you opened the rear door, your coat was trapped between the door and door seal. Also the foliage looks like it achieves the same often times. This will allow water ingress. Bleach is the best thing for killing mould. Not vey eco I know, but then neither are respiratory diseases. After your clean up the mould returned on bare patches of MDF. This stuff is basically compressed cardboard. It will soak up moisture like a sponge unless it is sealed. Clean the MDF with a damp bleach soaked cloth and allow to dry out completely. Use your hair dryer to assist if necessary. Then paint with your chosen laquer, varnish or whatever to prevent it's return. Also assuming the heater your mention is a warm air blower and fueled by gas or diesel, then the air intake should ideally be ducted from outside and not simply sucking air from inside the van and heating that up. The latter not being ideal since it would simply be recirculating humid air. Also when your heater is on open a vent or a window slightly. Hope this helps.
@nicroams

Thank you so much for the tips! I deffo need to reduce my coat collection, bad thing is I've only gone and bought 2 more 😆. And I will bleach the mould and protect the mdf. Although one of them is already protected.

Milton mold and mildew remover helps with mold. I live in a caravan with my gf and our doggy. I built our current bed from the frame of a very solid wooden fouton. Had to reinforce the frame once though. I used the b&q flooring sheet the one with the shiney side and green on the inside. Everywhere I covered on the walls is damp free but anything not covered is getting condensation. Over that I covered it with MDF which significantly improves heat insulation

Hi Nic, where you pointed at 7-minutes and 30 seconds is a hole in the rear of the van, there about 6inches by 3inches and are both sides, they are stale air vents(behind your green leaves ) and if your coat is up against them your van in the rear cant vent out, also the rear rubbers and the side door rubbers dont seal very well, check under the side door step plastic and it will be damp/wet as the water runs down the rubbbers. I and my mate had the same in our vans. x

When you breath 1 human can produce upto 1 litre of water vapour,,,, now for your diesel heater.. on the bottom you have two pipes, air inlet and exhaust.. both small pipes... now look at the heater.. one end has cold air in and the other end has heat outlet via a flexi pipe... so basically you breath moisture into the air, the heater pulls that air in at one end heats it and pumps it into the van... i have said this for ages no one take the cold air from outside, giving an air change of the van.. a vent on the side of the van would be best as the exhaust is underneath the van.. hope this makes sense..

Hi, any untreated wood is a building block for mold! especially mdf, air needs to move around the van and your stuff all so when we sleep we sweat quiet a bit that passes through your mattress and condensates and grows mold on wood, leather, fabrics just about anything porous, your garage area needs to vent into the main van with help of a small fan one in and one out so when you open the door in the van more fresh air will circulate or run a vent system from roof to garage and when you drive it will push air into garage under your bed, hope this helps! really felt for you having a crap time hope things pick up soon stay safe!

Hey you like jack Daniels too. It's my fave, so something we have in common. Something we don't have in common is you've cladded your van with wood. I learned that lesson with a van I had years ago. Wood attracts damp and mold and by the time you discover it the wood has to be replaced which means stripping everything out of the van to get to the wood. So in my last and current van builds I have cladded them in abs plastic sheets, they're easily cleaned, damp proof and a fraction of the weight of wood. Cheaper and quicker to install as well. Another tip is to opt for AGM batteries and have at least 2 of them. Lithium batteries are great but 4 times the price of AGM but something you don't get told about lithium batteries is that they shut down when they get too cold to protect the cells, not good when you're depending on them. AGM batteries can be safely discharged to 80% every so often and they are maintenance free, the best batteries in my opinion. Sorry to hear about all the issues you are having but like you said, it's all part of van life or life in general really except that problems with a house can often be bigger and certainly more expensive I have found. keep on keeping on, don't let it get you down and look forward to more great vanlife adventures. Keep the vlogs coming, they are insightful, entertaining and just remember what everyone seems to be saying during these challenging times - "we are all in this together, stay safe" 😉

Well done for fighting on. We have a lithium battery and they are good. Couple of points to be aware of though. You can only take them down to 20% not fully flat. Thats still 30% better than what you had though. They charge to full much faster. Be careful if temp falls below zero as they don’t like being charged then. All the best.

Hi Mould is often called by poor ventilation......in this side of the world we are in a dampish climate....i suggest that you have a vent fitted as if in your own house...in the meantime open windows open a little when you are stationary even at night this will balance the temp. Damp is caused when hot meets the cold ie walls and windows.......Not an exoert but it works for me.got this advice from a window fitter... Regards John Enjoy your vlogs.Be Safe.

Wow! Thanks so much for sharing from across the pond! Stumbled across you and your video as we are all stuck with limited activities and lockdowns:( I did have an RV last year, but still long for a Van as a more manageable means to get away. A suggestion maybe for mold is desicant? sp? They sell it at hardware stores, and even our storage places in a plastic bucket with a perferated top, crystals absorb moisture.... I also had an electric rechargeable one off Amazon, that just hung with a hook, and it changed color as it needed recharging to dry it out. Packets of silica beads / gel may also help to dry area out. Cheers and and thanks again! Stay safe, LOVE your proper English, haven;t heard in many years ... Canadian raised :)

If possible have a dehumidifier dry the van at least once a month for 24 hours. You'll have to find a place to stay during that time. Cotton fabric attracts moisture.

Lagging the pipe might help, if cold travels along the pipe into the van and meets warmer air it could condensate.

shut ir door with strips of paper and close work your way around the seals if it slips through pull the rubber seal of and put slivers of paper behind to bulk it out a lot of condensation forms in the frame of the van & the windows & back doors get alot of water .get 15 meters of alamium heater pipe and run it around the edges of the van then keep the cab and rear heated the pipe radiate wery well to keep it away.my battery went twice like yours twice its the fact its not getting charged fully like haveing a smart charger on it .iv changed mine twice under garantee.

Hi, to kill the mould spores when you got the vent/cold spot sorted, maybe try a mix of Neem Oil (1 tea spoon), Baking Soda (3 tea spoons) 500 ml water and of drops of plant based detergent. mixed it in a spray bottle (also good for rose mould apparently 🤷‍♂️

you remind me of me same van things braking all the time mold around the bed ends it comes under the cab floor insulation the front window gets wet .6 months in Buxton in a field full of sheep with 2 guinipigs in the van & washing everyday £60 a week in diesel for the heater a week on the lowest setting 16 constantly on. & the wether looks familiar.

Main problem with moisture and condensation is caused by the person living in the van. Apparently the average person exhales between 300ml and litre of water a day, that has to go somewhere and at night the condensation migrates to coldest parts of the van, so you wake up in the morning having unwittingly distributed up to half a litre of water around the van . In damp climates living in a van in winter the problem is compounded by damp atmosphere entering the van when a door is opened, exacerbating the problem. As other people have mentioned burning gas to heat food creates more condensation. I use my van in the winter and over time this has caused corrosion, laminates lifting etc. Sure there must be a solution like compact dehumidifier that doesn't run the leisure battery flat overnight??

Use white vinegar for mould. air ventilation is needed. but kill mould with white vinegar.
@agile-heliuk1801

mold is a result of condensation build up in your van. you need a roof vent. also worth investing in a Dehumidifier or moisters adsorbers. sadly very common in vehicles especialy in winter when you are inside with windows closed.

Astonish is the daddy when it comes to mould, it’s unbelievable and you just dust area and leave it. Retreat in an hour if it’s not disappeared. Smells a bit like chlorine until it dries but it’s amazing and slows the regrow thing down. Ultimately you need air to flow through that area to keep it dry. Maybe drill a few vent holes where your bed support wood support is

likely others have mentioned, but air circulation is the key to preventing mold. Tightly packed areas, mattress undersides, ect. are prone to mold growth. The heater alone won't help areas where air flow is restricted. best
@paulluggar5964
@paulluggar5964 3 года назад
Lithium batteries are great just make sure you get a split charger suitable for the lithium as they charge differently to a lead acid type batteries. The mould is an example of lack of insulation, damp air in your van from cooking/kettle and breathing is condensating on the cold spot that is also dark=mould! Extract fan+more insulation and a complete vapour barrier are what you need! Hope the diesel heater is working again soon, sub zero tonight! 👍

I'm so sorry that you had such a stressful week.... The mold.. That's a condensation issue.... Possible caused by cooking.... I would suggest.. moving all those coats to allow more air to circulate that part of the van... I would be inclined to drill some 20mm holes in a nice neat line in the board at 11:42.... If you can get as much air circulating as possible, it should inhibit further growth... Lemon juice in a spray also kills mold, and is organic.. ... Nic, you have great spirit, and I'm full of admiration for your tenacity..... .. The coming months and the spring equinox will help enormously...
@nicroams

I will give the lemon trick a go! I also have dehumidifiers now so 🤞🏼 one of these works so magic. I definitely need to cut down on the amount of coats I have to let the hot air flow in to the back because right now it has no air flow back there. Thanks so much for the tips as always!! 😁
