I love how the surveyor seemingly has a very loose grasp on ES lore. Like Austin is RPing as a real world surveyor teleported into Skyrim who just decided to do his surveys.

what pisses me off about winterhold is that its been a hundred years since half the city fell into the sea and nothing has been fixed.

The 'warming hands by the fire' animation becoming a shoulder rub is 10/10.

Austin is so dedicated to his job, he is working on a holiday.

There is a mine down the road under the jurisdiction of Winterhold, some of the citys guards will walk and patrol the mine. All of the miners there are Winterhold citizens

i like how the title actually tells the outcome of the video, it really feels like you're in it for the ride unlike with some clickbait title like "YOU WONT BELIEVE THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OF WINTERHOLD."

I love the idea of the surveyor accidentally becoming a mage in the pursuit of a more clinical survey.

"He's green--" And today we've learned our majestic enumerator is, in fact, colorblind. Or needs to adjust some settings on his display. All the high elves are hella yellow, but the college is looking mighty green and hazy inside today... I wonder if that dark elf lady has been throwing around her experimental 'turns everything green for ten horrible minutes' spell. The surprised little "--guard!" when he walked into the jarl's hall really just summarizes Winterhold to a T, I think.

Any Austin genius moment: marking the professor at the college softly with "Employed", but also adding a reverb echo to the noise appropriate for the EXACT distance the professor is from the Enumerator. Peak brilliance.

i genuinely think youre my favorite channel on youtube right now, something about dryly going over logistics of video game towns and critiquing woodworking and shit is just the kind of content i want to watch

this episode in particular made me realize just how many characters i've never questioned the logistics on how they get by. like where DOES nelacar get the money to pay for the room in his inn? why DOES kraldar have a manservant named thonjolf that gives him massages and keeps him company in the cold, cold winter nights?

I like how these legit show how employment isn't necessarily an indicator of how well a town is doing.

I have paid more attention to the Skyrim Employment Situation Summaries of this series than I have at the vast majority of my high school classes.

I was thinking that doing a series like this breaking down demographics of the different areas would be interesting too, like I don't really want this to end bc it's my comfort videos

I've always thought there's a ripe market to establish a blacksmith's forge in Winterhold. There's plenty of ore in the hold in general, and there's a mine just down the road which is essentially part of the town. Seems like it would be a boon to the local economy to set up a blacksmith there. Also, since magic and alchemy rub shoulders a lot (and mages need lots of restore magicka potions), an alchemist's shop ought to find a ready-made clientele with the college right there. Get those things going and then you have more taxes going to the local government (which can then do things like, for example, hire more guards, who can patrol the town and its outskirts and make it safe enough that farms can be set up in the environs of the town), and perhaps you attract the khajiit merchants to make the town part of their trade routes since there will be more to buy and sell there. There's room for Winterhold to rebuild itself, there just doesn't seem to be the will to make it happen.

The whole time i was thinking "theyre relying too heavily on one income source" and then you pointed it out at the end and it made me feel smart 😂 like im learning something from these vids. I like that your final report is well thought out and informative and comes to a conclusion instead of just summerizing what we already saw. It makes it the best part of the vid to me and makes me look forward to it. Keep up the great work 😊

Wonderful survey once agsin. In the Middens under the College of Wunterhold is the Augur of Dunlain. This is a former teacher at the College that due to a freak accident turned himself into a ball of energy. He's probably not unemployed because he has a disability that prevents him from working. Also in his state he appears not to requite food or water to survive and seems to not take up any resoureses for his existence.

"You better cut that out or your taxes are gonna get audited sooner rather than later, buddy" is my new favorite threat

@any_austin have you considered looking at participation rates and the percentage of the population in the workforce? Might be interesting to know considering that towns like Dawnstar might have a 100% employment rate but might not have a lot of people in training/education to replace those workers in the future. Might be applicable considering the high number of students living in Winterhold

If Nirya ever finds out she was considered a broke college kid for the puropse of this survery while Drevis Neloren the sticky fingered black market dealer is considered as empolyed she'll have a mental breakdown. I hope Winterhold will survive another disaster...

Probably already suggested: It would be interesting to see this done with Red Dead Redemption 2. The logistics of surveying the larger cities might make it too much of a chore however.

I could literally listen to this man analyze anything about this (and other!) games for HOURS. He's got a nice voice and a cracking sense of humor. I think Nelacar kind of counts as self-employed. The two retired guys, I think only one of them is actually retired and the other is his servant, so employed. Also you missed Phinis Gestor, one of the teachers in the college. Also Enthir, who's... I mean he seems to be part of the faculty, who just happens to do some shady stuff on the side.

I would LOVE to see this series carry over into Oblivion once you wrap up your findings with Skyrim. Maybe don't jump straight into the Imperial City (unless you're REALLY ambitious), but instead start off with a smaller town like Leyawiin or Cheydinhal (or even Bruma, which would actually make the most geographical sense coming from Skyrim) to get a sense of the regional populace and attitudes. The way NPCs behave and interact in that game makes them feel like prime targets for a direct survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

If you were to do this to the entire province of Skyrim, would you count bandits as employed or would they bring the rate down?

It would've been cool if there had been some sort of side quest to restore Winterhold. Something like the Tarrey Town quests in Breath Of The Wild. I hope someone's made a mod like that.
