The period of a show can effect the kind of Tie Knot the Costume Dept may want to use. Some periods, especially in the 1930s & 60s the tie knots desired might be very neat & small. Tricky indeed for even the smallest Lav Mic.
Simon from ‪@URSAStraps‬ demonstrates a simple technique for hiding a mic in the tie knot without leaving a large impression.
Essentially the best route is often to rig the mic "naked" without any extra tape or mounting and place the mic to the side of the knot rather than in the centre. It can be useful to hide it on the opposite side to the 'key light' so the effect of the small lump won't be highlighted by the strongest source of light. You also cannot go wrong with a tiny & beautiful sounding ‪@DPAmicrophones‬ 6060 in a tie!
Another great option to avoid lump in the bottom of the tie knot is to rig the mic facing upwards in the knot rather than down. There is much more room for small lumps in the knot at the top compared to the bottom! You can find a full video demonstrating how to do this here : • How To Rig A Mic into ...
