Laurie Wisefield Is one of the best guitarist's that nobody talks about here in the US. Simply fabulous techniques with incredibly tasty licks. I wish I could have seen this particular lineup back in the day.
He was brilliant with ash but Wishbone Ash without Martin Turner was and never will be WIshbone Ash, Andy Powell's version are just a tribute band in my opinion
I agree. I still like to go and see his band. His second player now Abrahms, is killer. He has a wonderful tone too. Very classy. Martin's band is better as it has Martin and his guitarists (Misha and Danny) are brilliant and can really sing too. So the vocals are top notch. He has a new drummer who knows the parts. Tim Brown was with Martin before and really had that Steve Upton "Crispness" to him. Andy's drummer, Crabtree is too stiff, no swing. It is palpable in the songs. I too play and Upton is my nearly #1 influence along with Billy Cobham. Love Upton. His snare kills. Bruford like.Cheers Mate! @@martinpowell5769
I didn’t see him with Wishbone Ash but twice with Home, once supporting Jeff Beck at the Roundhouse. I saw the original WA line up at Reading in 1971 and they were superb. For me the first two albums are the best.
I know this is not always considered as the best WA era but, damn, how I LOVE this live performance!!! Could watch it everyday. So much energy and passion.
Andy and Laurie, Trevor and Steve - a cool line up of VERY talented players. This is good. I like Trevor's energy. He has it going on. Laurie is total styler, killer player, classy and a great combo with Andy.
When you have a set-list and someone from the audience disrupts it with a request and you oblige that individual....... you are a classy professional of the first degree. I love Wishbone Ash!
Marquee Club opened in 1958. This performance is the 25th Anniversary of its opening.... 1983. Great year for music in general. Bands like Wishbone Ash had to reach their following. Lots of change in the rock music scene.
Muitos Brasileiros nos comentários. Massa d+ ! O Wishbone Ash dá uma aula ! Steve Upton é um batera poderoso. Laurie e Andy formam uma dupla incrível, e o Trevor Bolder é um baixista absurdo.
No greater band has ever existed. I've been in love with them since the early 70's. I've seen them in concert three times and I have nearly all of their albums. Laurie Wisefield is my favorite but I just learned about him this year. Weird, huh!
Went to The Marquee Club in 78 and saw a band from Brooklyn NY The Shirts. Lead singer was Annie Golden. The band was hot!! Bought their album The Shirts while I was there. It's on blue vinyl and I still have it after all these years!
I had this on VHS back in the day and didn't realise it was the mighty Trevor Bolder on bass! Ash and a spider? Too good to be true. As I thought at the time not enough lead from Andy. Good player as Laurie is.
Foda demais!!!! Já vi esse show do Wishbone Ash no Marquee, na íntegra, mais de 20 vezes!!!... Dire Straits, também da Inglaterra, fez show nessa casa, muito famosa lá.
I love this lineup. May not be Ash classics but I actually love Number the Brave and Twinn Barrels albums. Laurie's solo on No More Lonely Nights is such a beautiful piece of guitar playing.
Saw this band in various universities, colleges, etc and on many a support act too at festivals. Still have Live Dates (Volumes I & II), Argus and others on vinyl. To me Ted, Martin, Andy and Steve were the band but whenever I hear and see Laurie Wisefield play Phoenix as he does in this performance then I just have to take my hat off to him. Always preferred the harmonies of voice (with Ted and Martin Turner) but gotta say Laurie (sorry Ted) does play a mean guitar. Have seen Andy Powell's version of Wishbone Ash since the 'great divide/split' a couple of times but never quite felt it did justice to the original line up. I missed a chance to see Martin's version since I was given a spare ticket to a beer festival. I still play Argus all the way through, in track order, except now it's via RU-vid (with eyes closed and really listening why do you need a video?) - OK so I'm a child of the very late '50s :) TY for posting. Last time I was at Finsbury Park (Marquee), twas a support act called Chas and Dave supporting some bloke called Eric Clapton!
@@rickblackers88 Martin Turner IS Wishbone. Poor chap got a raw deal. He is the inspiration and has a brilliant mind. Hats off to Andy though for keeping things afoot.
@@tomlayman3141 Martin Turner is not WA. Andy Powell has slogged on for years keeping the band alive and staying current. Martin wants to control everything and keep playing the first 3 albums over and over and over again. Andy keeps the great songs alive and adds to them with more modern tracks.
Nice to see Mr Powell gettin the words wrong on Phoenix back then like he still does today. Go and see Martin's band Andy to see how to play Wishbone Ash correctly.
@@mozartsmate6358 And there is the difference. Martin's band only has old WA tracks to play over and over again in the small venues throughout the UK. Andy and his WA crew have grown, made new songs and still provide great entertainment to WA fans in many countries. Yes he still plays some of the staple WA songs mixed in with the new songs. Some of which are very good and some a bit blah but at least they try to stay modern instead of trying to re-live the early 70's day after day.
Well, Martin and Andy are both original members of WA. So both play WA songs but both look onto them from different sides. And this is what you hear. And both are really good and nice to listen to.
I feel the same way (renate holos' comment).then rethm section duo Steve and martin were excellent duo ❤at last original member Andy only! still wishboneash is wishboneash this is MoriKawa/Japan over/ end!
Seen this line up in 82 in Lisdoonvarna ...I m assuming that is Trevor Bolder on bass ?..must be honest not the same without Ted and Mart but pretty damn good....some rythym section !...Laurie could really play .. my older brother bought Front page news when it came out ..we liked it but for me nothing will ever top Argus
I love his tone hear. I love his Strat but I love how he is getting out of a (slightly modded) single pickup guitar. The guitar tones on the Living Proof album are some of the best I have ever heard, apparently quite a lot of Orange amps.
Superb playing. What a great pity that the original line up couldn't last, and that there has been so much endless discussion about who was a better player. All a bit pointless really, given that there were many great players around, and at the end of the day they created some memorable music which the fans appreciated.Enough said.Anyone else think that laurie wisefield looked a bit like a young Jeff Goldblum?
ikr! it’s a bummer that the lineup changed so much throughout the years. upton/turner/turner(or wisefield)/powell are my fave! btw i cannot agree with u that laurie looks like jeff hahaha. i personally think he and ted look alike
Great guitarist though Laurie Wiseman is, I still prefer the original line-up with Ted Turner. He was a much more melodic player which contrasted with the more aggressive style of Andy Powell. I was a big fan in the early 1970's and saw them live many times but I lost interest after Ted Turner left.
@@mozartsmate6358 Apologies for the error. He is of course called Laurie Wisefield. I had to look it up because, as I said in my original comment (which I stand by), I lost interest in the band after Ted Turner left.
Fair enough Joe, I was being a bit mean to you, my apologies. On the other hand, you are dead right about Ted Turner, one of the greats. I first saw Wishbone Ash in 1970 and I was absolutely mesmerised by them, they were fantastic. I know you said you had lost interest, but if you ever get the chance to see Martin Turners band I can highly recommend them. I saw them last week in a small theatre and it was a great night. They are very true to the original Wishbone sound. They also have a couple of DVDs out.
No worries. I have listened to some of the music of the later iterations of the band but still prefer the original lineup. Ted Turner had a much more lyrical and bluesy feel which contrasted well with Andy Powell's more aggressive rock approach. Sadly, I probably won't get the chance to catch Martin Turner's version of the band as I now live in Spain and haven't been back to the UK since the start of Covid.
Cheers Joe, completely agree, the original was the best. Hope you at least get to see Martin again sometime. He's 74 now, voice has gone quite a bit but the music is very good. Best wishes.
Not saying these guys aren't talented because they are - but just doesn't sound like Wishbone Ash/as Cactus doesn't sound like Cactus without Jim McCarty on guitar !!!###
