Amazing how when the chemistry of the original four band members gets interrupted it’s never quite the same. The Ash had a tremendous run with the first 4 Albums and Live Dates. One of the best runs of any Band. This is them in their absolute prime. Steve Upton is outstanding on Drums!
So true. He was seriously underrated and unrecognised by much of the music press but definitely not by Wishbone fans. As you state, an integral cog in the wheel with at times, a great jazz feel.
I saw them twice-sadly not with Ted Turner, but with Laurie Wisefield in the There's The Rub tour. Still, you don't expect a live act to actually surpass its recordings (especially on the vocals) but in all respects, this band FAR EXCEEDED its album performances live, and with the sheer volume-earsplitting, and just honey to a young man's ear-it was an experience probably better than going into space. I was so into Wishbone Ash back in '72-'75 that you could almost say they were a religion. It's SO sad how their animosities have turned them into bitter old men . . . just the worst possible outcome of one of the best rock bands ever to have been on earth.
@@mozartsmate6358 But having both the books written by Martin Turner and Andy Powell, it comes out very clearly that Powell is the villain in this piece. And now he traipses around the world daring to call himself "Wishbone Ash" . . . that's a laugh. If anyone was ever Wishbone Ash it was Martin Turner, whose book is excellent, by the way. Powell's is just an exercise in narcissism.
@@kamakirinoko Absolutely correct. Martin's band is far superior to 'The Andy Powell tribute band'. I saw Martin's band a few months ago, great night, and a down to earth guy with a great sense of humour. First saw Wishbone Ash in 1969, (1st tour) and they blew me away, 54 years ago. Martin's band keeps that spirit going, whereas Andy Powell's band just seem to be going through the motions. Best wishes to you and yours my friend.
@@mozartsmate6358 DAMN! I wish I were in England again. They'll never come to Montreal. 1969?! I was in public school at Godalming, Surrey. I wasn't to hear of Wishbone Ash till around 1972, when I was living in Zaire, Africa (but still going to public school). I wouldn't see them till 1974 or thereabouts, on a date with Johnny Winter . . . truly a concert to elevate the soul of a young guitar warrior.
Thank you so much for posting this fantastic piece. These songs are epic to me. Great to see the boys in action. What a time it was, when these pieces were brand new. No other band like em'. Wish there were 20 minute versions of both "Blowin' Free", and "Jail Bait".
what makes this vid so special is seeing Seve Upton in action--during this period of the Bone he was as good as ANY drummer--put that in your pipe and smoke it!
These boys were a 70s tour de force par excellence......saw them many times in that era. Just recently saw MTurner version- at the age of 75 he's still a class bassist
The contribution from Martin Turner on bass and lead vocals is so often overlooked and under appreciated. Take him out of the sound and you have a completely different band - a good one no doubt, but so much of that unique wishbone sound gone. I’d argue that if Martin had left WA in place of Ted Turner, the band would have folded. Thanks also to everyone in the comments for recognising the immense talent of Steve Upton, an epic drummer. I heard that he moved to France. Is he still living there?
And they did it by accident , when Ted & Andy did their auditions they were so good they ended up taking them both as the band was slated for just one guitar player. Lucky for them & us !!!
Well....WA's first album 1970, Thin Lizzy's first album 1971 so that's correct, WA before TL....but, The Allman Brothers Band, 1969, their debut album, the first song literally starts out with twin lead guitars....welcome to the show WA...(my two favorite bands, by the way)
Prog rock before prog rock was cool. Had the pleasure of seeing them in 1977 on their Rock Palast tour in Germany. Came out with side one of the 1st Live Dates.album.
My favourite track will always be first album, first side, first track - _Blind eye._ The impact that had when I first lowered the needle onto the lead-in of the LP, back in 1970... Nobody'd heard anything like that before.
It is a heart break ,just like the Beatles! It happens every time. A real good band makes it to the top of the pops, then everyone's ego takes over and they start fighting over who is the biggest star! The band breaks up and the separate pieces are not equal to the sum! You would think that they could have put their differences aside - But,the hurt goes too deep. Wishbone Ash was a Cool band link others that fell apart.
I special like Pilgrim because really longer complicated twin Lead sound was very nice! I'm W Ashfun from70's one Ashfun of Japan/ I'm Japanese my English please tolerate ! this MoriKawa/ over-

I’ve just discovered a new band-love, them. Whew! “ Blowin’ Free ” was written about lil’ ole me: Her hair was golden brown, I found it hard to reach her. She’s an Enigma…to him. Their intonation on the vocals is so cool @ 2:20, “Yeaaahhh!! Ahhh!” 🎙️🎸🎶
Great footage. It's just a shame that the French narrator translates in French during the interviews. Surely its in the best interests, including French fans who don't speak English, to get the translations via subtitles.
So this French production couldn't put a camera in front of the band? All we see is their backsides. WTF? Regardless, Wishbone Ash was an awesome band! One of my faves, especially live.
Nice footage, but it would have been great to have subtitles during the interview sessions instead of that droning French voice! Great group, though…a lifelong favorite of mine!🎸
@@richardgreen3910 Hi Richard, Original drummer Sreve Upton joined Martin Turner, (bass/vocals) and Martin's brother, (lead guitar), in 1966 in their band 'The Empty Vessels, aged 20. Martin's brother (guitar), left, so band advertised for a replacement and hired both Andy Powell and Ted Turner on guitars. Changed their name to Wishbone Ash and began touring in late 1969. 1st album Wishbone Ash was released in 1970 .Steve Upton played drums right through to 1990 when he finally decided to leave the band and the music industry completely,. Steve is (happily), still alive and kicking now aged 77.. Steve Upton, a brilliant drummer from a brilliant band, Wishbone Ash..
