If CDPR make another Witcher game it would be awesome if you could create your own character, then pick which school you played, and if each had unique bonuses and penalties. So for instance the school of the bear could do more damage with big attacks, but do less damage when using signs. With perhaps the school of the wolf being the most balanced, without any bonuses, but also no penalties.

I don’t know that you can say bears are “slow”. A bear can get running around 30 mph, which is just shy of a wolf’s top speed and faster than an especially athletic cat.

When you say mmo I'm assuming you mean free to play. Free to play mmo now means microtransactions to keep up with maintenance from being freemium. F2P MMORPG has a big chance to be a death sentence for games/companies one way or another if they don't sell themselves out to investors and I don't really want CDPR to go down that route (I'm pretty sure they don't either). Even cyberpunk 2077 isn't mmo iirc. I pay for games for the creativity, to have fun and immerse myself in deep stories and worlds. I shouldn't and won't hand money over to people for items that will make the grind that they intentionally designed into the game easier, or for cosmetics that don't mean anything compared to them caring about making a quality storyline and overall game. That's usually where mmos end up because it needs time and money to push out quality content and if they're not on a subscription, people's attention spans are to small to sit idle for the 3 to 6 months it takes to deliver an expansion that takes people 2 hours to finish. They need cash flow from somewhere regularly maintainable to pay for that 3 to 6 month work towards a final product. It's a shit show honestly and it's why games suck now. Companies that invest in gaming take creative control away in order to make money on microtransactions before the game inevitably kills itself because it isn't sustainable. I'd rather CDPR stay kind of like an "author" of games rather than a company trying to make a business out of gaming if that makes sense.

Heavy weapons are useful for all those Skellige beasts like trolls and grizzly berserks, not to mention a giant...the chain mail is to compensate for the decreased mobility due to using said heavy weapons. Makes sense.

@janekgaganek3871 6 лет назад
But weight does not correlate that much with speed.. the balance of the sword does and the swords of witchers were supposed to be masterpieces, so i assume they would not limit the users movements . (BTW if they were supposed to use greatswords - then it doesnt change anything, as still they are not that heavy, 2-3 kilograms while longswords which are much smaller weigh on average 1.4-1.8 kilos. Also if you dont belive me check out italian style of greatsword fighting)
@matthewmuir8884
@matthewmuir8884 5 лет назад
Mysterious Stranger correct. And not just swords; it is surprising how thin the head of a two-handed Dane Axe is and just how nimble a Dane axe is. If the theory that Bear School Witchers sometimes used silver axes, then they still wouldn't be that heavy.
@thegreenreaper6660
@thegreenreaper6660 Год назад
Seems to me that every Witcher-school is built around a certain specialism? Wolves are more overall: a bit of éverything, with every wolf able to lean towards a personal preferance in speciality?. Cats are thé specialist in very fást and lethal physical attacks(Gaetan; the Beast of Honorton? Some good indicating details there). Griffins are more mastered into magical abilities, mostly a vást increase in the effect of Signs. Vipers are more poison and venom base 'killing machines' that first weaken and slow their opponent with bladeoils for instance. The Ursine Witcher is the 'heavily armored, heavy hitter', specialized in going one on one with the bíggest of the monsters: Trolls, Giants, Chorts and Fiends? One or two perfectly and patiently aimed blows to the skull of even the largest of Giants or Fiends, would kill off these juggernauts rather quickly, where for instance a Cat would be dancing circles around it, cutting every major muscle and artery to bleed out the monstrosity? Every witcher-class can take out monsters, small, fast ór hideously huge.. Bears are just best suited for the big ones, Cats and Vipers more for larger packs of quicker ones, Wolves are the overall-best, Griffins dó hang closely towards Bears, regarding their masssive Sign-intensity, allowing Griffins to have equal durability to Bears, due to the Quen-sign being a constant protection? Which Bears would also specialize in? Griffins would rely more on Signs, where Bears are alchemical 'marvels'? Imho the design of the Witcher Lore, especially detailed in TW3, is exquisitely well done!

The Bear is my favorite in terms of armor and combat preference, even if not much is known. Armor is one of the most important factors to keeping your soldiers alive, let alone a knight you've been training for 5+ years. Now imagine your soldier is a super-mutant toxin infused monster that can literally blend people to bits? What's the main weakness to that? -pitchfork crazed peasant hordes come to mind...- Any stray arrow! Archery was enough to disable a limb or pierce an internal organ, any injury is a bad omen. Injuries will always lead to death, even with a healing factor and pain inhibiting potions, opponents won't stop to let you off so easily. When outnumbered, not being able to aggressively fend off the enemy is a death sentence, finding a way to prevent arrows from digging your grave was an utmost necessity in historical medieval warfare. Technically, gambeson is a lot better than it's made out to be but an English longbowman is still gonna put a hole in you, that's why everyone used shields. Witcher's don't use shields. Thus, the most logical step is either mobility to evade arrows, or armor that isn't as flexible but hardly hinders your movement yet can stop an arrow from putting any nasty holes in you. Hypothetically, if a Witcher is on their A-game they should be capable of dodging any missile headed toward them but much like the moto for all Witcher's, it's better to be prepared. For all intents and purposes, the armor is an insurance policy for any moments when they do take damage and we've seen it happen a lot interestingly enough. I wonder if the Bear school armor is rare not only because of the school's mysterious nature, but also the price needed to make the armor both mobile and tough yet retain usefulness against all manner of monsters. The Bear school armor isn't plate armor by any means, however, it seems to be thicker than normal gambeson, reinforced with chain mail and some plate for the arms. Historically and realistically speaking, this wouldn't make you impervious to arrows but it should be enough to prevent an arrow from stopping your adventuring. With the combined speed and reflexes of a Witcher, their techniques, magic, and alchemy make them a force beyond a squad of Knights in my eyes. A Witcher doesn't need plate armor to keep arrows from harming them, they can simply dodge/deflect/Aard anyway. If an arrow does happen to catch them, the armor of the Bear should be adequate in preventing major damage. In my headcanon, I'd like to believe the Bear school Witcher's used silver/steel great swords unlike the rest of their brethren. A greatsword is a magnificent battlefield weapon, increased range and cutting power combined with the strengths of a Witcher could cleave someone in half! Interestingly though, greatswords didn't weigh that much more than their slightly smaller longsword cousins because that would be impractical design, thus, they were as elegant and refined in terms of techniques and even for speed but had far more power to boot. Sure, they're not "as fast" and can be unwieldy in a far tighter environment like city alleys, but that's what hand to hand combat and knives are for. This all combines into what is my favorite Witcher school. They're the ones in the family capable of holding themselves on their own in a battlefield, being the strongest Witchers in terms of physical brawn and power. Magic, potions, petards, and overall flexibility aren't the main focus (not that they ignore it either) but their pure tenacity in swordsmanship and mobile yet protective armor is likely the best among all the schools. If anything, I think the Bear school is at least the most practical compared to the others since a battlefield weapon (like the aforementioned greatsword if they use one) is far better to use against monsters, and armor to keep you alive is far better than armor that doesn't.

@thehound1712 6 лет назад
Very interesting. Though you've underestimated the biggest con (and in my opinion, an absolute dealbreaker) of the Bear school greatly: _speed._ Speed is a crucial factor in any combat situation. Half a second delay can be the difference between life and death. Not just attacking but defending (or fleeing) as well. So I can imagine a Cat witcher killing a Bear witcher with a quick strike to the head. Or any agile monster attacking the Bear witcher for that matter. Besides, ever noticed how agile monsters or even wraiths in TW3 dodge strong attacks effortlessly? The Bear has a major disadvantage: the lack of speed. Which is not just important, nay, but fundamentally crucial. The Bear school doesn't seem practical at all, too slow because of heavy armor/strong attacks and I imagine too noisy in situations that require stealth (because of all that heavy equipment). I have to admit I might be biased since the Manticore school is my absolute favorite. The Manticore buff to alchemy and bombs seems life-saving and extremely powerful. Alchemy and bombs can be usefully applied in any situation, be it attacking or defending. Potions and bombs saved my life in TW3 more than I can count. So if there's any school that's 'the most practical', then it must be the Manticore school in my opinion. Important sidenote: plus the Manticore armor looks hot af making it extremely practical for seducing sorceresses as well. Wink wink. Seriously though, strong attacks - the Bear's specialty - aren't nearly as useful and effective as quick fast attacks in the Witcher world. Certainly not in the game. Can't imagine irl to be any different unless you're facing an extremely slow opponent or foe. So yeah, all things considered I have to strongly disagree with your statement about the Bear school being the most practical of all the schools. I mean c'mon. Let's be real!
@eirin481
@eirin481 6 лет назад
Terry Merry Armor doesn't affect speed. It simply forces you to tire slightly easier. On a superhuman with enhanced endurance, there practically is no downside, though I must say as a HEMA practitioner I love the idea put forward by the OP that these Witchers would use greatswords; I always found that to be the most viable of options in fighting monsters and multiple opponents, not to mention very good against humans one on one. Again though, "speed" is only downplayed in heavy armor in this game for balance purposes.

New Recruit Seriously though, good historical referencing; I enjoy the way you think.
@matthewmuir8884
@matthewmuir8884 5 лет назад
Jacob St.Clair I can't speak for new Recruit, but there is a type of two-handed axe that would seem perfectly suited for a Bear-School Witcher: a Dane Axe. Two-Handed and incredibly powerful (can chop clean through thick leather and can even burst through riveted chain mail), and it is thinner, faster, and far more nimble than most people think it is. Throwing axes would also make a great supplementary weapon, though one would probably have to decide between bringing a crossbow and bringing throwing axes.
@cronicas_imemoriais
@cronicas_imemoriais 5 лет назад
Great swords does not work, basically because of It's Weight, when you swing the sword There would be a Very strong pull force that, even for a nonhuman, could put youn almost to the floor, and you cant accelerate It because its heavy so you would have to trust in atacks only downwards with the sowords own mass force.

What I would love to see is a Witcher game where you create your own character and can pick which school to have been trained in and have differing story lines due to that, this would also give heaps of customisation options. The school of the Cat could specialise in using throwing knives, daggers, short swords & cross bows as well as additional strength against humans while not being as strong against monsters. More than happy to pick fights for sport, particularly with humans, due to which the other schools do not like them. The school of the Viper could be of a similar build to the school of the cat with more focus on offensive magic/alchemy (e.g. bombs) while also being stronger against royal guards and monsters than the Cats. Do not forge relationships with Kings & Emperors easily and are easily manipulated. The school of the Manticore could specialise in Alchemy. Would also have slightly better magic than most of the other schools while being much weaker in direct armed combat. Also specialise in luring & killing monsters with traps. Good relationship with most of the schools, with the exception of the Cats but have particularly good relationships with the Wolves. The school of the Bear could specialise in heavy weaponry. Large two-handed axes, heavy armour, heavy cross bows and have a rage mode. Known to be overly violent and do not forge or maintain relationships well unless in Skellige. Poor level of alchemy as healing oils & potions are not necessary very often due to their armour. The school of the Griffin are magic specialists. Particularly strong against Griffins & Dragons and easily form relationships with people of importance, much more diplomatic than the other schools but do not get on well with mages. Not as proficient in armed combat against humans as they are against larger monsters and do not care for offensive alchemy & explosives due to their strength with magic. The school of the Wolf, general all rounders but extremely strong when it comes to tracking down anything human or beast and fighting monsters of all shapes and sizes. Specialise in combat with medium length swords, but also proficient with small axes and bows. Average alchemy, average magic and have a severe distaste for the Cats and to a lesser degree, the Vipers. Now that I've sat here for an hour thinking about this, I really want this game hahaha

Matt Norris That’s really interesting! Although I would go for more of a fluid class system with those baselines. Other than that, I would maybe set the next Witcher game in the future of the world, now ruled by Nilfgaard and once again ravaged by the dangers of a conjunction. Maybe with new monsters (from all of the games and books). And a new Witcher school. Maybe bearing the name of the dragon. With a new trial of the grasses (higher success rate, but only a few of the subjects become fully fledged, way more powerful Witchers than ever before).

As for the equipment though, I'm kinda running a mixed set. 3 pcs Ursine(Chest, both swords) and 3 pcs cat(boots, gloves, trousers and crossbow) for a good balance of defense and attack + the mutation I chose was Euphoria coz it buffs both sword and sign damage at the same time.

It may be that the countess was actually the usurper, leading Gerd to insult her and side with her dad, and having won the day, besmirched her father's name and sentenced the Witcher to death as a witness to her crimes. Either way it's cool, nice that we're left to wonder. Thematically it would be cool if the Bear school were from Skellige. With Gerd's story, it's hard to tell if he's from North of Redania (near Arcsea) and fled to Skellige, or if he's from the islands and went back home to flee the countess's vengeance. At least the crossbow story suggests that weapon was not common in Skellige. Though of course witchers almost certainly shared weapons and techniques between schools.

a good way to put it would be all Witchers have the same standard powers and each school specializes in a specific sub class of fighting, so bear would be heavy specialists, wolf medium, etc. Also by far the best witcher lore series on youtube thank you for taking the time to make these and actually doing them well and being clear you're already a huge leg up to other lore channels so keep up the great work

My first and only witcher game is witcher 3. I bought it after a friend of mine told me i would like it, because i liked skyrim so much. So i have played it for a while now. Have almost 70hrs in the game and i have not even went to skellige yet:D but i have watched almost every lore video of yours and tried to learn as much as possible of the lore. And if i would have to choose a favorite school it would be wolf just because I love the armor and fightning style. And umm sorry for the long response and for all the misspelled words, english is not my native tongue! Thanks and keep up the good work!!

I am doubtful of the dragon part, just as I am with witcher George, as doing a bit of research, from both books and games, witcher George slayed a cockatrice, and the other probably slayed a draconid, as not alot of people, even witchers, distinguish the difference between dragons and draconids, same sense with TRUE higher vampires and regular vampires.

I remember hunting down pieces of the Bear set, led me to a decrepit castle on top of a mountain in Skellige that I had to climb the mountain to get into. Eventually had to go into a couple holes in the ground leading to the bottom of the castle, got the Bear piece in the throne room down there, but I was trapped there. The only way out was to switch a lever in the back of the throne room to get out but it was like the only part of the entire game that glitched for me. The door lever didn't worked......restarted from my last save point a couple times, double checked guides online, but the door glitch always remained. Had to give up on School of the Bear at that point. No worries though, School of the Cat gear is best route anyways.

A thought occurs: as I'm building a berserker deck in gwent I realize all of the bear school witchers are under skellige heres the thing we have no clue if they were actually from there and no proof. However the simpler solution is that if they truly seek the bezerker curse intentionally where better than skellige to do that? Many bear school witchers likely traveled there as the last part of training, and as such became heavily associated with the isles.

Id like to point to some evidence of the bear school being from skellige is that the fist fighting tourney in skellige was founded in honour of Duns Ursus, who fought monsters with his bare hands, ursus is too similar sounding to ursine for it to be a coincidence and who else but a witcher could fight monster with there fists, the ursine armor set has pretty spiked looking gauntlets

My problem with the ursine armour is that it barely looks "heavy". No steel plates and barely any mail, it looks like a slightly upgraded gambison. The Griffin set looks way more protective, imo it's the only witcher set that seems to be actual armour (from a historical point of view).

The dwarf in the sky cell might've been killed trying to make it in the school...kinda makes sense that way too. CD Projekt Red needed to weave in three different playstyles (fast with light armor and an emphasis on signs as well as stamina regeneration, medium as a sort of jack-of-all trades and master-of-none, and heavy with a strong emphasis on simply ploughing through your enemies (and romances) while tanking damage) and basically needed to create a Witcher School according to each playstyle. The only Witcher Schools actually canon are the School of the Wolf and School of the Cat. All the others are either only mentioned in graphic novels or only in the games themselves.
