❤ I have 2 autistic children and this was so very helpful. My youngest daughter absolutely responds to music and sounds... she is non-verbal too ... just like Gabe. He reminds me so much of my little girl.

Agreed! I'm new here and I'm wondering if Gabe ever had any elopement issues? My son Gabriel is a year older and still darts off (tries to) in blink of an eye. Any suggestions are SO appreciated.

My son was diagnosed with Austim when he was 3yrs. From around 3 1/2yrs humming the words was his way of communicating to us. His eye contact wasn't terribly good but one day I saw him looking directly at me when I was speaking to him , I said "Can you see Mummy's mouth opening and closing when I am talking?". Within a couple of days he started saying words, then after a few weeks whole sentences. He knew everything I had been teaching him, (Even though I wasn't sure what he could or couldn't understand). He still finds it hard work in social settings and has meltdowns when things overwhelm him. He found Primary school hard a couple of the teachers had no idea how to work with him, Secondary school, well they were fantastic! They made an effort to ask us about our son regularly, to update how best to teach him. He passed 7 GCSEs and now attends the local college, studying Business Management. We are all so proud of him. I often do wonder though, what if he hadn't looked at me that day and watched my mouth moving. That little window opening opportunity between the two of us is very special to me. EDIT: He was nearly 5ys old when he started saying those first words.

He will communicate with the tools available. My nephew is so nonverbal that, once when I carried a comic book purse and he said, "You like Batman", I almost passed out. I started babbling about superheroes to him, but quickly saw in his eyes that he was gone again. Never heard a word from him since, and he's about to graduate college. The autistic brain is just wired differently.

I just looked that guy up and wow does Gabe look just like Bjorn when he was in his teenage years!!! U have a very keen eye.
