"We should be getting a percentage of our jersey sales!" Have you ever in your life seen someone walking around wearing a WNBA jersey? Because I haven't. Not once.
Once, the guy was homeless, filthy and inebriated, but he had a NY Liberty jersey on. I had a hard time discerning which team it was until I realized that he was wearing a WNBA jersey, and ripped sweatpants, and unmatched socks.
'The NBA is 75 years ahead of us' pretty sure when the NBA began the players had second jobs, these ladies are making six figure salaries in a league that loses money.
No it's not bad. It's hilarious. And guess what it's getting them eyeballs. So I guess it's good. 😅😂. They a joke. But a joke we all enjoy laughing at non the less.
@@dustyjeffers5716 there's a few good players doesn't help that Candace Parker just retired I like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese coming in they're entertaining ball players to watch
The average WNBA salary is $147,745.00 (per website Queen Ballers Club as of 04/02/2023). That's a good paycheck for a league that perpetually operates at a loss.
I was just casually watching while listening carefully to the dialogue. But my focus switched to watching once I began to smile, then chuckle, then laugh at every shot.
It is actual hard to watch this video, yes it is worst case footage, but man, in these moments it seems even a casual male player could compete there in regard of technique and athletics. Also how do you want to get a bigger share of revenue when you make a big deficit each season? Isn't that share 0 at the end at least?
You can't owe on revenue sharing. Even if your revenue is 50 cents sharing that would be 25 cents. You are thinking of profits sharing which is why they aren't asking for that. They want a cut of the money coming in only and ignoring the loss (which would be greater) and letting the NBA deal with the loss. It's hilarious honestly, they will destroy their own league by being selfish (well cost the NBA a lot more money).
@@Canucks44219 The NBA owners aren't coughing up any additional money to keep the WNBA afloat. Unless of course a 3/4ths majority decides to cave into 'shaming'.
@albundy5492 I heard someone else break it down. It's not my math. I chested lol. There are 12 teams either 12 players on each team. 144 total players. 12,000,000÷144=83,000 and changed. So I was off by 5k.
So what you're saying is that the NBA should use its annual profits to pay people to attend WNBA games, or a bit less to watch on-line? Makes about the same sense.
Let's just put it this way. Im a woman and Im a huge nba fan. Nothing gives me more joy in life and chills than watching my team and good basketball. But you can't pay me to watch the WNBA.
Instead of these spoiled brats getting down on their knees and thanking the NBA charity for funding this disaster of a league, they have the nerve to demand a raise for a failed product. The gall to demand to be paid more in a league that LOSES over $10 million annually never ceases to confound me. These ladies must all have majored in Social Justice Warriorism or Women’s Studies, because it’s clear NONE of them took any math classes. I hope the league collapses and folds so these knuckleheads have to actually make a living actually providing value to a Company. Then they’ll get a lesson in how salaries are supposed to work.
Worst comparison by the narrator ever. I've seen way more finished layups from any middle school game I've ever watched (or be a part of) in 1 quarter than I've ever seen in any WNBA game ever.
Where exactly is the WNBA supposed to get the money to pay their athletes higher wages? In every game, the stadiums are always half-empty , and anyone at home is rarely ever watching a game on TV. If you want more money, then you need more fans, ladies!
My mom was a good basketball player. Set records in her high school and was offered a bunch of college scholarships. I always used to laugh because of how much she hated watching women's basketball. She said it was like watching paint dry.
My daughter played basketball. I’d take her to high school and college womens basketball. It was awesome. Great positive environment. WNBA games are full of lesbians. In the stands, on the court. Which is ok. But we’re not into that.
The last time I watched the wnba is when lisa lesley, rebecca lobo, tina thomson, sheryl swoopes teresa wheatherspoon were playing. It was actually fun to watch those girls going against each other. Now days not so much.
The WNBA loses $10 million a season the truth is that number is actually much higher, all the logistics needed to run a stadium during the games are losing millions more during each season. And also the WNBA has never been profitable since it's inception.
It's mind-blowing to hear the logic from this woman. If you want to make more money, you need to bring more eyes to the sport. With how big the WNBA is, it also blows my mind that not one of these geniuses can figure out a way to make this sport actually fun to watch! They need to stop pretending they are as good as NBA players, and change the entire presentation in a way that could peak anyone curiosity.
People forget that it was not that long ago that players in MLB, The NFL and NBA had to have off seasons jobs to pay the bills. I remember when the NBA finals were taped Delayed to Midnight on CBS and their cable TV partner was the USA network. Baseball was around for 100 years before players started making real money. The WNBA needs to pay their dues and accept they will never be on par with the NBA.
Agreed also if they can with all do respect get female who has spending to put money to it also the LGBT+ community like how they support female singers.
Nah. Because it wouldn't be funny because it's the same as watching them play normally. It's low hanging fruit. Making fun of the WNBA for playing bad would be like making fun of clowns for being like clowns.
I 100% agree with WNBA players should get a majority of the profit from the league. So when are the players going start paying back the money they owe for the league’s losses?
By my count, it’s approximately $83,333.33 per player that needs to give back to the owners for even having a league for them to play in and that only covers for this year and not the previous 25 years.
@@zacheryseymour7297 Holy Christ, and she literally said "We're talking about apples to seeds" the WNBA is still in its infancy compared to most leagues, when the NBA was in it's infancy the players got paid like shit, because it wasn't marketable yet, WNBA is much less marketable even compared to 50's NBA and they're talkin about similar revenue? Blows my mind how clueless they are.
No eyeballs on, no money. Their job isn't to play basketball. Their job is to sell Ford trucks, Verizon Wireless, tickets, Travelers Insurance, (you get the picture).
The moment that women's basketball stops being subsidized is the moment that women will decide to make the adjustments necessary to make a league profitable. Their low risk low reward strategy will never achieve the results they want.
Yeah on average WNBA players are 60% the size of NBA players and still play on the same court, with the same highth hoop. This really shows how little they are trying to improve the sport. They should try just try once and scale it to their size and see what happens.
@@bella42291 Wait.....If anything, the court dimensions should open up the offense because there is more space. And female players are not nearly as quick as male players. It takes longer for female players to react and get to the ball handler or shooter.
@@bella42291 BTW, women play on the same size tennis court as men. Women play on the same size volleyball court as men. Women bowl on the same lanes as men. Women compete in the same Octogon in MMA.....
The simple fact is fans pay to watch people who are far better than them at a sport they love. They pay to watch athletes do things they wish they could do on the court/field. WNBA isn’t anything I couldn’t do by the age of 12
I watched BC v Syracuse ladies basketball when I was running on the treadmill the other day. Something was off. Then I realized what it was. The TV director was not cutting to any shots of the crowd ----because there was hardly anyone there! Maybe a few hundred people and the arena was 95% empty. People don;t want to watch, not even women.
I'm not a basketball fan but this is really painful to watch them all stand around while one player takes a mediocre shot. No guarding or pressure, and they still miss. By the way, war, war never changes
@@mercx007 To be fair, I was amazed by those specific moments, so I looked a little closer; those specific moments are from what I believe is the WNBA All-star Game or some other exhibition game. So they're half-assing it because it's an exhibition game. The NBA guys do the same thing, more or less, in their exhibition games. They just don't miss the lay-up or dunk four times.
[Director to Chuck during the commercial break prior to the Plum segment] "Chuck, don't say anything. Think of your happy place. I'll take you to Mickey D's after the show, my treat, all you can eat. For the love of God, don't say anything."
I wish they would just disband the league under the premise that it doesn’t make enough money to keep itself alive, and then let these never satisfied cry babies figure out what to do next on their own.
I’m English but live in the US. To watch the Premiere League I have to watch ESPN, Peacock, NBC, Fox, USA Network etc. And I do. Millions of others do too. Why? Because it’s good!
The math actually works out pretty good on the revenue percentage. If you give them 10% of the revenue and then multiply that by -10 million, then the players should have to pay $1 million to play.
I often hear how its unfair how the WNBA stars are treated especially when it comes to money but the funny thing is, if it actually was fair they would've had to shut shop over a decade ago. Hell, NBA players didn't make much until they started averaging around 18,000 fans a game. In the 80's the men literally had to double the average fanbase just to get their money, WNBA attendance gets worse every year despite the fact the NBA and their players have been giving them free promotion for decades.
Also dont frget that the NBA was actually DYING in the 80's they were LOSING viewership. Then along came a man by the name of Michael Jordan and all that changed. The problem with the WNBA is they don't HAVE that saving grace, their program is borderline boring. I truly believe if they simply lowered the rim that would change everything., this would increase the chances to score thus making the game more exciting to watch, but NOOOOOOOO we are being sexist when we say that that's MYSOGYNY.
@@elijahfoggy1583ah that was Magic and Birds doing. As their stars rose, so did the league. Even with lowered rims though, women's basketball is just plain sloppy. The passes are sloppy, the dribbling is sloppy, the defense is sloppy, it's all sloppy. Old NBA may have been boring but it wasn't sloppy.
@@Nothereman9999 thank you for the correction kind sir, Magic and Bird were credited with revitalizing a dying sport. You are also correct about the game being sloppy, but I feel like lowering the rims is a step in the right direction.
Watching the WNBA is like watching 2 hrs of blooper reels. It cracks me up. My daughter's all play basketball and occasionally will watch a game. They see the air balls and missed lay ups and it always turns into a how to not doing something moment.
I remember in 2022, I was on a flight with the back seat entertainment. I turned on ESPN and I think Around the Horn or Pardon the Interruption, some annoying talk show. ESPN2 had game 1 of the WNBA Finals.
I don't think that the players can do anything to improve the league. They are at the height of their talent. What are they going to do? Play topless? I DON"T want to see that.
@@longshot7601didn't spike try a women lingerie football league back in the day? That wouldn't even work, and they had hot women who weren't very good.
@@gilbertoflores7397 At least Spike understood that men (and a few women) wouldn't be watching women's football for the football. It's hard to take the WNBA seriously when the talent is such a joke.
Their attitude towards this issue is indicative of the modern American woman. The false sense of entitlement coupled with unrealistic expectations. It’s a constant state of delusion😳
My wife loves watching the NBA, she watches games whether I'm home or not. I once asked her why she didn't watch the WNBA and she gave me that look that says, why are you asking such a stupid question? I play a lot of ball, I must know a hundred guys who've played ball over the years, not once did anyone say, did you see that WNBA game last night? The only people who watch WNBA are the families and friends of the WNBA.
Its like watching someone watching a training video. Its just clumsy and not interesting, there are a ton of other sports where women generate a lot of interest just not in basketball and I doubt that will change much
Someone at ESPN needs to remind the women of the WNBA that if they want more money, then they need to put out a product that will attract fans to want to watch them so they can in turn create revenue. Until then, it isn’t going to happen.
After lebron retires, he should put on a wig and join the wnba. He'd be the first basketball player ever to win a championship in both the nba and wnba. That'd bring up viewership
I played hs ball for a little bit but I never really enjoyed it. And I believe la fitness has more intensity. I’d put a couple Vasa randos above your average wnba team
I'm sure that a WNBA player would scorch a playground player in a 1v1. However, absolutely no playground player would think that he deserves to get paid close to 150K a season to play.
When you play in a 15,000-seat arena in front of 1,500 fans, and no one watches you on TV, and then you ask for more $$$, you are indeed delusional. Or you have no concept of what paying your own way is and have zero concept of how business runs. Whatever, these women are out to lunch.
I gave the WNBA a chance a couple of weeks ago. Then they had this long commercial promoting the lgb community. Gave y'all a chance and you blew it like bud light, target, and disney
Bill Simmons wrote a great column about this back in like 2004 where he compared the WNBA to opening an inferior pizza place next to the best pizza place in town and then have all the chefs be women as a marketing ploy.
@@GrumpyCat-mw5xlIt's not a whole lot different than my daughter's 12 y/o league. You don't have to be a pro to master airballs, missed layups, and sloppy turnovers.
I'm near 50 yrs old so i was around when the league first began and i can say they put more effort into promotion when the league first started than they do now. The women back then weren't so entitled as the women today. They understood that to make people come and watch them, they had to make their league as popular as possible. Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, Shery Swoops and the like were presented as cool and hip. They had cameos in popular music videos and TV shows at the time, had cool commercials and embraced American patriotism in the Olympics. They put in the work and I'll bet the league's viewership was higher in their first few years than it's been the last 10. Today's WNBA doesn't promote itself well. In the era of social media, why aren't their players more visible with cool tik toks or Instagram pages? That's their fault. WNBA player today comes off as smug, delusiona, entitled l and unpleasant and last but not least is the impression that they're a lesbian sports league. That's just the truth. No one wants to see hard face broads running, sweating, jumping and grunting. Femininity is a factor in the coolness appeal. This league is a lost cost and it's mostly their own fault.
stop it. for 25 years they've been trying to force this garbage down our throats and nobody cares. and they've definitely been pushing it hard the last few years.
You are right. I was actually more engaged and watched WNBA when it first started. Players are likable, plays hard and organized. Then the league got political and unwatchable. These players did it to themselves. Nobody want to watch a bunch of whiny people that airball a lot.
The saying is, ‘comparing apples to oranges’. Comparing apples to… umm seeds… isn’t comparing fruit to fruit. I think I see the issue with the WNBA right there in that statement.
The WNBA players should get the same revenue as the NBA players. minus 10 million a year would equal.... the players owing the league to play and not actually get paid. these women are delusional
most times when a woman is talking you can just feel the ego emanating, i don't get it. no pride or shame just "i'm the shit" attitude 24/7 in public. it's so boring.
Women make up well over 50% of the consumer market as well as dramatically more than half of domestic spending (last number I read years ago was in the 68-74% range). This means the WNBA has a simple math issue in that not enough women are interested in the WNBA. I think Shaq had a great idea of just slightly lowering the rim. You’ll find a consistency in the most popular female sports like MMA, tennis etc in that the game feels the closest to their male counterparts. The sports that showcase the largest drop-off, such as basketball, aren’t as popular.
I don't know why lowering the rim is seen as such a slap in the face. Maybe even let them play with a smaller ball. Adding some dunks would be nothing but good for them.
@@NoName-cn9bt Yup, smaller ball already. I would go further and lower the 3 point line to highschool level. With a lower rim and closer 3 point line, it'll lead to a ton more points.
I don't think lowering the rim n junk would even help. If they can't make wide open lay ups now, how TF is lowering the rim an inch or 2 gonna help 😂 It's a skill issue, and realistically women should be in the laundry room DUNKIN MY WORK PANTS IN THE WASH
I actually love the league, I have a Goddaughter that plays in the league. But, what happened a couple of weeks ago, really pissed me off. An NBA player adked one of the stars in the league, about checking out a game. She ASSUMED that he was asking on a personal level, and she told him not to bother her. She blew him off. They are the main ones that swear that the NBA players dont support them. And another comment was ON POINT. These women aren't helping themselves with in person promoting. They are blaming everyone else for their failures.
LOL. I gotta say, at this point, we need to let them get what they deserve. That's such a crazy story ngl. Imagine being in such vulnerable position as an industry and shitting on someone actively trying to boost you. Just let it go. It doesn't deserve saving.
I'm a high school and college sports official. In basketball the girls side has 100s of jump balls per game and soooooo many travels. It is truly hard to stay engaged officiating women's sports
This is a simple accounting problem. There are fixed costs and variable costs for any business. A big business that has plenty of revenue can “easily” cover its fixed costs and offer a revenue share program. A small business with fewer sales that is struggling to cover fixed costs cannot afford to share any revenue. These players just don’t know anything about operating leverage or else they would not be asking their business to do things that are not financially possible.
Exactly... Their own gender people are not watching or supporting WNBA because the competitiveness, playing style, athleticism is laughable. And this is the 1000th time they are losing their mind.
Again its really being forced down peoples throats. Nobody really wants it, parents are taking their kinds for cheap days out and the girls love it for a while. But consider that you can watch women's football for free. Aint a dam thing people want out there on offer for free.
@@whenisasnakeatail4933 can't say no one here watches it mate. There's definitely a market for women's football, obv just a small fraction in comparison to mens, but it's def there. Its a simple biological fact and nothing will change it, so either find a way to change and adapt the sport to be more skill focused rather than physicality focused or watch it be irrelevant forever like the WNBA.
The Houston Comets won 4 chips and were one of the more popular franchises with actual marketed stars and the franchise folded. They loss money year after year and in the end nobody wanted to buy them despite a friendly 10 mil asking price.
I think if the women agree to pack the seats at the same price as the men and generate equivalent media agreements then they should get the same as the men. At this point I don’t think they are there yet
They need to understand that without the NBA keeping their league on life support there'd be no WNBA. They should be grateful they are getting handouts and that they can play ball for a living off the backs of the NBA and its players.
The NBA Reps should say if 1 more WNBA player complains about their job then they are shutting down the league and putting the money towards youth basketball.
Exactly. Imagine having to consistently pay someone with the same job, but from a different store part of your paycheck when you shouldn't in the first place. My last job was retail and it was primarily female. Its too much to put into words. The fact that the assistant store manager said, "Thank god you're here" when I clocked in speaks volumes if an optimistic, turn the other cheek person like her said that.
