You were close, Amber. The lead singer's name is Gwen Dickey. "Car Wash" is the song that everyone remembers of theirs! They also had "I Wanna Get Next to You", "I'm Going Down", and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore."
"I'm Goin' Down" was also covered, but by Mary J Blige in the 90s as well. In addition, I did hear The Cover Girls version of "Wishing on a Star" first, and heard the original version in the late 2000s.
70's Soul Music was so beautifully arranged and had singers who could hold a note. It was so sophisticated back then. Thanks for reviewing all music. ✌️❤️
You're so right. They had so many great singers with soulful voices. They didn't have to do all those vocal gymnastics that they started to do in the '80s. They just sang.
You know I'm in my 60s.. I took that music for granted like it will always be here.. But I'm glad we had a chance to enjoy it and I use to go to a lot of shows back then also.
Rose Royce - Love Don't Live Here Anymore. for Female Fridays one of their finest songs to date with female lead singer this song has one of the coolest bass lines ever.
I remember going home from the grocery store with my mom when i was little, and this song playing on the radio, and me looking at her and she was singing and driving…..she looked at me and smiled….i smiled back…I was 5….1977….she doesn’t remember things anymore, but i love that memory….she was happy…thank you for this…
The 70's really were a great era for music, you had all the cool soul bands (Rose Royce, Cool & The Gang, Chairman of the Board, Tavares etc), swamp rock like CCR and Lynyrd Skynyrd, songwriters like James Taylor, Carole King, David Bowie, and Paul Simon, rock acts like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, not forgetting Elton John, The Carpenters and Punk Rock, we will never see a decade like that again.
Gwen Dickey , probably one of the underrated and slept on singers, an amazing voice and vocal control, she should be up there with Chaka ,Natalie, etc…
Interesting back story to the song, Norman Whitfield (the bands manager) turned to his girlfriend Billie Calvin, for material for Rose Royce's sophomore album.Calvin wrote the song original intended for Barbra Streisand. Gwen Dicky said that when she started to sing the song, Norman told her to sing it softer and more seductive.
Thanks for that education! I know in more ways than one that Barbara Streisand is a Super Star singer/ actor, but boy I'm glad Norman advised Gwen Dicky to do that. Her voice is velvety.
Songs and bands like this bring a lot of memories back, happy memories. Although, I was young, they helped transport me to a better place 🙏🏼. Glad you both enjoyed it, but of course, you both have great appreciation and taste for good music!!!
The man you know what color Christmas is don't you? It's red rain it is red sovon hasting a song called Teddy bear Teddy bear was by red sovanne and sovi Ione
"Love don't live here anymore" was a song that I played over and over when I went through my first big break up. I loved the instrumentation in their songs as well. I was always transported. Thanks again kids. Great pic. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
When this song came out I was a little girl. One day my mom found me sitting at the piano plucking out the notes and singing my heart out. I thought it was my song. I believed full hearted that I wrote it until mom played it for me on the radio. Great choice!
@@user-jd5ls1ro9o no I don’t think so! But I have always been able to hear a song that I fall in love with maybe once or twice and know lyrics very quickly.
@@michaelasay8587 thank you! I sing every chance I get and have even been paid more than a few times. Best memories are when people either get up and dance or make song requests for special nights out because they’re in love.
Lead singer, Gwen Dickey, was also known as Rose Norwalt. When the song was released, it was like nothing else at the top of the charts. Beautifully done.
You haven't even yet to hear the best of Rose Royce they have so much more for you to discover. Please take the journey you will not be disappointed. Trust me
The bass player, Duke Job, was the cousin of a drummer I played with here in Dallas, Joey Woodard's and he did gigs with us and guitarist Tommy Prendaville in 85. We played a birthday party for Demitri Vale, a famous Dallas portrait painter. My touch with greatness. Duke toured playing bass with the Temptations when he was 16.
I fell in love with this tune from the moment I heard it. Played my 12” single to death. Bought another and played and played it. You can’t go wrong with Rose Royce
Backdrop song to my first love and heartbreak. I just remember playing this song over and over and crying for days. Still one of my favourite songs, transports me back to my 16 year old self.
OMG! I got so nostalgic hearing this song. I remember hearing this song for the first time at a house party. There was this girl that I just fell head over heal at school and she was at this party. I couldn`t wait to hear a slow song and when it did, this was the song. I didn`t have the nerve to ask her and while everyone else had already picked someone to dance with, there she was by the window swaying back and forth alone. With her eyes closed I just kept staring at her, then she opened her eyes and caught me looking. It was too late to turn my head to look away. She then looked at me pointed to the dance area, smiled and knotted her head, silently asking me to dance with her. I found myself walking towards her and suddenly her arms were wrapped around my neck and my hands on her waist. I was in heaven, feeling her head on my shoulder and smelling her hair. What a moment and this song meant a lot for a special shy High School kid who finally had his wish come true, Wishing on a Star
This brings back memories for me. I remember it was 1979, I was 22 yrs old and Rose Royce came to England and I went to see them at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. They did their hits like this one and Car wash, and Gwen Dickey was just as good singing live. Great days.
You can't imagine the emotion this song carried for those of us splitting up with this in the charts. It was crushing, even at my age it still scares me to hear those first five words without music.
the 70's was the best era for rock,RnB,funk, and classic dance/ disco. real singers and musicians and orchestras playing, not computers or machines and auto tune. I was a DJ in NYC since 1978 and heard the best music ever. Thanks
Such a great band, who started off with a double album set from a well love movie Car Wash . I love this female lead singer with just one listen. There is a whole library of excellent music.
I love Gwen Dickey's voice!!!!!!!!!!!! Sadly Rose Royce broke up after a few albums. Gwen moved to Great Britain in the 80s. She is celebrated there and has performed at Glastonbury & with other bands.
This was the song for the last call , last dance before lights went on at the clubs back in da days!! also this song is special to me because it was the song that immediately started playing when I was standing on the side of the dance floor and across the way was someone I loved very very much , right at the moment are eyes met this was playing...I will never forget that moment .
I love this song and remember it fondly which was released in 1977. British singer Paul Weller did a very good and faithful cover to this song in 2004 which went up to #11 in the UK charts. This song was also covered by Seal, Randy Crawford, Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Wishing on a star was one of my top 10 breakup songs when I was a kid. Love Don't Live Here Anymore is a heartbreaking song from Gwen Dickey. LOVE Rose Royce!!!
This song was used as the title music for the fantasy TV series, The 10th Kingdom. The opening title sequence where the New York landscape transforms into a magical fantasy land is my favourite title sequence of any show.
Im a late subscriber to your channel. I absolutely love what you do. This song OMG I bought it on vinyl when I was at school and played it over and over. So many memories. My first ever dance was to this at a school disco. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face 😊.. looking forward to catching up on all your posts ❤❤ xx
I'm 76yrs old now and thankful that I was young in the 60's and 70's and going to all nighters and then disco's, I was in love with Gwen Dicky and her wonderful voice with Rose Royce musicians backing her, such great era's.
Perfect marriage of music, lyric and vocals. This song paints a vivid picture of love, desire, romance and strong attraction for someone. It reminds me of a feeling of butterflies in my stomach when I’m very attracted to someone.
Rose Royce was huge in the late seventies and they had a string of R&B/Funk hits! I love this song and her voice is fantastic but also the instrumental is amazing! One of their biggest hits is Car Wash which is the title song from the 1976 movie of the same name, check it out! Also check out their hits, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore (my favorite), Ooh Boy, and I’m Going Down (remade by Mary J Blige). ❤❤
This has always been one of my favorite songs. Rose Royce was such a great band. "I'm Going Down" is another of my favorite of theirs. They did most of the "Car Wash" soundtrack which is really great w the song "Car Wash" going to #1 on the Pop charts.
The Cover Girls did a fantastic remake of this song in the 90's. They have a regular version and a more up-tempo remix version, both were on NY radio a lot back in the day
Rose Royce is famous because they did the soundtrack for the movie"Car Wash." Their whole album was great. We danced through the last of the 70's to this album. The movie was about taking a one day look at the lives of a group of people who worked in a car wash in downtown LA. The movie starred some of the big stars of the 70's. Included in the cast was Richard Pryor, The Pointer Sisters, George Carlin, Bill Duke, Garrett Morris, and Franklin Ajaye. You know Bill Duke from Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fun little movie.
Welcome aboard, youngsters! Gwen Dicky was the reason Rose Royce was such a success in the 70's . 'In Full Bloom' and 'Strikes Again' are my favorite albums by Rose Royce.
Thank you so much for that reaction.😊 I remember hearing this song on a long road trip with my girlfriend, cruising and watching the sun slowly go down.
Please give another chance to Queensryche. Queensryche "Silent Lucidity" its amazing. With Geoff Tate on vocals, of course. Do the live version or oficial vídeo
Rose Royce had some great slow love songs and some great dance tunes like, "It Makes You Feel Like Dancing," "Do Your Dance," "Car Wash," and "I Wanna Make it with You (Do Your Dance)."
I’ve never heard the original version of this but I LOVE it! I think there was some remake I heard in the 90s but I don’t know who recorded it. This version is incredible! ❤
This is one you could go into deeper. Their song “Car Wash” is a big one from the 70’s. Also “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”, “I Want To Get Next To You”, and “I’m Going Down”. Some these songs were on the soundtrack of the movie CAR WASH from the 70’s. You will get a kick of seeing the looks at that time in the movie.
I grew up on this music. I love it so much. Thank you for reacting to it! I think you’ll love ‘I’m Going Down’ and ‘Car Wash’ which was the name and song used for the hilarious 1970’s movie of the same name. Also, their song, ‘I Wanna Get Next to You’ was also used on the Car Wash soundtrack.
This favorite has been covered quite a few times, and the few that I like are by Teena Marie, The Cover Girls, Beyonce, and Will Downing. I love their songs "I'm Going Down" (Mary J. Blige has a remake) and "I Wanna Get Next to You", but I wouldn't list them for _Female Friday_ because the male members sing quite a bit, too. They sing the theme of the same title for the movie "Car Wash". I've suggested the song and movie. It's a 70s comedy with a couple of serious moments. Richard Pryor portrays "Daddy Rich", The Pointer Sisters portray "The Williams Sisters", and also George Carlin, Bill Duke, Franklin Ajaye, Ivan Dixon, Garrett Morris, Tracy Reed, and more are part of a large and talented cast. Maybe one of those names will be familiar. 🙂
I love this song and still have the album, Rose Royce in Full Bloom, this single came from. You should also listen to "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". It's also a wonderful song.
I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I had to be lucky enough to catch it on the radio when I worked in a trendy outdoor cafe in tropical coconut grove (Miami) Florida in 1980. Absolutely loved it! Thanks for playing my request! Audio version! Another song with good memories is “Bad Boys” by Wham. Little-known song. My kids and I would turn it up on the car radio full blast! Car was a peacock turquoise 1963 mercury meteor V8 with fins! Lol!
I wonder I wonder how come nobody nobody's ever done any mother's mother's finest I had a good sound baby love baby love is the song and it's is by mother's finest
OMGOMGOMG!!! So glad you 're doing this one! One of my favourite songs and performance videos! This is the short-lived but super awesome Space Funk style movement! nd of course, there is Soul II Soul's instant classic version of this song too.
