Would not surprise me as there is so much material that has Jamie Marchi's voice that the machine can splice together slit-second samples to create something she never actually said. Since James Earl Jones has already signed his voice likeness over so that Vader can continue to be voiced by him, that should absolutely terrify the voice actors.
I'm not a fan of AI replacing good VA's, but if I have to choose between an AI that does it's job or a VA/localizer that has an agenda... going to choose the AI every single time.
@@pear7828 with how scary good these AI peeps are getting, I'm not gonna be surprised that sooner or later, it'll be just a matter of choosing from drop down boxes which VA you choose for each character, and have it auto generate seamlessly and have the track ready as you start the episode. Granted, you'd have silliness like Spongebob playing Lucoa for instance, but that's a gamble some might be willing to take. Scary good outcome? Have the Japanese VA AI redub the English dub.
These women not only effectively annihilated their careers with how they handled this controversy but also harmed other current and potential VA workers by simply by proxy.
I love the original line, it was pretty funny. New line is all right too. Dangerous to use AI since tons of companies are firing humans and then learning they f- up. Not to mention if the voice actors give consent to the use of their voice, ya dig? So kudos to getting a more natural line, but RIP vocal professionals who are used without consent.

I dunno. I felt like Tohru was REALLY overemphasizing the words "try" and "body" in her line (especially compared to the Japanese version, where she sounds like she's making a lowkey quip). Still, far from being the worst dub reading I heard, and compared to butchering the original line, most definitely an acceptable replacement to Funimation's BS. And the fact that it's all AI just makes it all the more impressive.
I was watching Shangri-La and the dub inserted the word "poggers" I am not an expert in Japanese but I am willing to bet all the money in the world that's not an accurate translation.
"I'm not into women..." which, if you read the manga, is false. In that scene, from my interpretation, Kobayashi thought Tooru had mistaken her for a man, hence why "I'm a woman", by saying she's not into woman they just assumed her sexuality
^ This, it's a joke among fans to call Kobayashi a guy (because she's not feminine I guess), which completely disappears when you change the line from: "I'm not a man" to "I'm not a lesbian"

Ai could start to act more politically biased in the future, they were some funny issues with ChatGPT on this matter. But yeah, for now they are pretty neutral and that's really cool. Even more for an AI which job is to translate, i mean, it's supposed to be pretty hard to translate faithfully and twist the meaning of words for your political agenda at the same time, you can't do one while doing the other...

To change an AIs biases you have to inundate it with biased training data until it's wieghting shifts accordingly, or start messing around with it's weighing by hand which is nearly impossible on large models from my understanding.

I remember back in the day where I live that the only way to get anime was by sending blank tapes to fansubbers who would then send the tapes back for a fee. And the subs were incredible with spots where they felt the need to explain the japanese terms so you could pause the tape and read why a given character said something the way they did.

It's still wild to me that they just casually admitted "oh yeah, no one on the script team speaks Japanese..." That connects a lot of the dots with the poor translation and localization.

Oy, I love hating on Jamie Marchi as much as the next person, but don't fuck up the truth. She said that no one who are *script adapters*, aka localizers, speak Japanese. They just take the translated script and fuck with it to match their ideology.
Localizing goes beyond this, I'm unable to watch subbed anime on netflix because in constantly catching misstranslations compared to fansubs. Not to mention name changes. I'm so glad AI is taking over in this sector, this shit's been going on for decades.
Studios should make a clause to international distributors to make sure the same meaning is kept. Any breach of clause will bring penalties to distributors and/or localisers

I was reading a fan translation of "Gushing over Magical Girls', and in the page 26 at chapter 20, the evil mascot said to the evil traitor "Arrogance would lead to your demise". I thought this phrase was perfect to be said to those wokalizators.

I've watched that re-dub several times now. Not only does AI Lucoa have a more energetic tone in their voice than Jamie, but that jab at western localizers actually sounds very true to the characters.
@@UltraXPGaming Ironically one of the biggest weaknesses of AI VA work, winging things based on a written script, is totally neutralized here as the AI has a voice pattern of the specific dialogue already at hand so it only needs fine-tuning, in a way it's suped-up autotune but instead of changing notes it changes words. So although AI isn't quite where it needs to be to replace voice actors altogether it 100% is good enough to go back and fix every single bit of woke corruption in dubs hitherto released.
That garbage excuse of a woman blocked me when I told her to reflect on herself and what she did with shame and embarrassment and she blocked me. Literally did not attack her and she refuses to take accountability. Thanks to her and those she works with who are okay with what she is doing they really took opportunities from genuine VA. In case you're referring to the changed line where dub Kobayashi outright says she's not into women. This is bit of a messy subject. The change seems motivated by wanting to avoid "heteronormativity" implied in the original "I'm a woman" -rejection. The localizers would probably defend it by rightfully pointing out that Kobayashi probably should know that lesbians exist. However, if they were aware of tropes in yuri anime, they'd know "but we're both girls" and eventual "turns out girls can love girls" are staples of the genre that people kind of just expect.

I'm not going to lie, that sounded much better than what was originally she wrote and said. And the AI did it in her own voice. There's no lines about pesky societal norms. This is one example of I'd be okay if someone has a job taken by AI.
This version should have been the official one. It feels more in touch with the characters themselves, rather than them saying something out of place seemingly random.
The funny thing is that when Russians try to translate anime, on the contrary, they can add a vulgar joke even where it was not originally there, thereby turning the scene into a more comedic one
@revsaysdesu A lot of this localizer drama comes from anime fans saying "you are not doing your job" and localizers saying "That's not true. We are doing our job" and that got me curious enough to do some digging. Did you know Crunchyroll's mission statement is "help everyone belong". Not "accurately adapt anime", not "Distrubute anime as widely as possible" so if appropriating anime and japanese culture to push a message by changing lines and context "helps someone belong" they will do it. Before Funimation merged with crunchy their mission statement was "To make anime as accessible as possible to fans across the world" so if including lines about the patriarchy or changing the dynamics of characters personalities or relationships makes it "more accessible " they will do it. For Viz Media their mission/vision statement is "Bringing the finest in manga, anime and global entertainment to English-speaking audiences around the world." Notice how none of these localizer discussions seem to be about Viz Media.
The reason that Fansubs got so popular was because of localizations like this. Now not only is the quality of the official release declining, but AI tools make translating and dubbing available to more people.
Fan subs are what started off the industry as a whole, Americans when to Japan and bought VHS tapes of their fav anime, translated it with subs then resold the tapes, then an industry grew from it. Thats how "piracy" can actually help, it shows the market people have an interest.

AI can actually put in the inflection and emotion if instructed to do so. It require a bit of mark-up on the script to basically tell it HOW to say a line. Whoever did that just popped that out as a quick example. Another thing you can do is have a random person say the line and use AI to make their voice sound like the original voice actor (which is why actors and voice actors are in a huge (and legitimate in that case) fight against companies trying to sneak in clauses that provide rights to their voice without permission or compensation. But in this case, it's used to fix bullshit. On the localizing. It's crazy to see the double standards. In one part a large chest is claimed as 'unrealistic body standards' , implying that a a woman is capable of willing her chest into a standard in the first place, and also severely antagonizing anyone who happens to have grown a great deal in that area. And then in another they modify dialogue to express that it's not okay to shame someone for how they look... So they shame anyone who might have a large chest and then turn around say it's bad to shame people for how they look.

Yeah, with AI we are really entering an era where these companies are going to be forced into doing things properly. If the companies don't do it right, people will just use AI themselves to make it right. On a side note, this tech could actually allow any show to be dubbed. The potential of AI keeps growing.

I'm usually really good at spotting AI, but too many American VA's phone it in so bad that it makes it almost makes it impossible for me tell the two apart
It's so mindblowing to me how well AI can actually do stuff like this. Tohru was a bit rough and how it put weight on basically every word, but I'd never be able to guess it was AI, it just sounded like an inexperienced voice actor. And the other one was just perfect, I'd never be able to tell that apart from a normal dub voice actor
this is why back in the day i prefer fansubs so much, they always did a better job and higher quality then the official sub works back then. more accurate, nicer looking with the fonts/colors. and these people did a better job for FREE for the most part.
I'm from Brazil, and we generally don't encounter 'woke' ideologies in our localizations, except when they translate from English. Can confirm, in Portuguese, they kept it mostly like the original. The line goes like this: 'In this society, people always complain about everything, so I changed. How do I look?"
Same here in The Netherlands with the Dutch version like most shows they air here where close to the Original. ( not sure online like watch anime but majority that where on tv and mabey some now too are close)

When I first got into watching anime as a teen, I learned pretty quickly that it's best to enjoy it with subtitles, because of a few bad actors (namely 4kids) who did a LOT of mistranslated to remove anything too Japanese or too unfriendly for sheltered children. They didn't just edit the script, they also edited the anime itself, leading to some weird scenes, like characters in Yugioh pointing finger guns instead of real guns. I'm now 32, and after the past few weeks of watching this drama you have been covering, I can't help but wonder how no one managed to learn their lessons.

I really don't get these localizers. They are basically employed by the fans. They wouldn't have a career as a translator or a voice actor if the fans didn't watch, but they treat them with distain and use the media to propagandize their own politics and agendas. They complain about men and misogyny, but have a pretty comfy job and are doing well for themselves all considering - better than most honestly. They live in a society of privilege where they are very privileged yet complain that they have it bad and that men are suppressing them. It's a completely asinine situation.
Some of this dub dialogue by Marchi just serves to reinforce that she just didn't understand the series, or the characters, or didn't care about the development lore of either. Kobayashi's personal taste in a 'significant other' treads the fine line between asexual and bi-curious, the latter especially when she's been drinking; this skews further into yuridom as the series progresses. I don't believe she's ever shown an interest in men, however. For her to say "I'm not into women or dragons" is confusing. She's definitely not as gay as Tohru, but that localized dub line makes it come off like she has absolutely no interest in her self-styled dragon maid, which is observably not true. Lucoa has never really displayed the feelings of personal shame over how she presents herself, whether it be her bodacious human body form or choice in revealing clothing. Spoiler alert, she's also an unrepentant shotacon, and her decision to tone down the skin exposure was done mainly to mitigate the embarrassment displayed by her "master" while in her presence. For Lucoa to diss her own style is completely out of character. Marchi doesn't seem to grasp that a literal goddess probably isn't that concerned about any particular societal norms, and is only conforming in small degrees so that she can continue to peacefully remain where she is.
The emphasis in try and body certainly sounded weird and the next was kinda harsh, but it still mostly sounds like it's being read by a human, it's weird in the same way early resident evil dubs were, with the lines being read out of context. Also the 'for' exposure irks me a bit, should be 'the' exposure no?
That one is more of a how to make good Parody it's like one of the peak Abridge like content Dubbing industry don't use it often which is one of the biggest wasted potential.

This just demonstrated that fandubbers have the ultimate power in this situation, because any dub that sucks, they can just use AI to fix, and that will make the piracy problem a thousand times worse, so nobody will be watching crappy dubs _or_ subs anymore. The AI sounds flawless. Glad people are pointing out more of the malicious localized lines. Someone needs to make a list of these examples. I can't imagine how large it would be if you considered other anime too.
The worst part is those localizes make the show reflect badly on people who don't believe in that political agenda, making people believe even Japanese media is being infiltrated by Western cultural "woke" influence while the abandonment of Western comics is going on for partly the same reason. The only localizations I’m willing to accept while going WAY off the rails are Ghost Stories, DBZA from TFS, MXC Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, and Hey Spring of Trivia. Why? Because even if they’re not even close to being accurate, they still get the job done and they’re bloody hilarious!😂 And most importantly, they spread some dumbass, unwanted message.
To think if the localizers and voice actors didn't throw a tantrum, most of these "creative changes" would have gone unnoticed by the majority. Classic.
I think Anime fans should start watching Anime in dub so that we can spot the garbage and protect our little brothers from these egregious localizations. It is a worthy sacrifice.
