I moved to Dallas in 94. I went to my first real computer store in Plano. It had a dozen computers set up running Doom. Dallas also had these arcades where you sat in this isolated pod and raced other people in these scifi racing games. Dallas was so crazily ahead of its time then, I still look back at it in awe

Doom didn't get the flak until 1999 with Columbine. Most of the attention, at the time, was on the console and arcade market, because consoles were seen as "children's toys."

@@TriarchVisgroup That makes a lot of sense. When I grew up in the early 2000s, even PS2 and Xbox were seen as having too many "mature" games by my parents - so I got a GameCube lol. No complaints.

@Michael Persico No I don't think its that really. That probably plays some role because he was always the biggest tech development nerd at ID but he could certainly be bothered to do other things, like turbocharge a Ferrari and then give it away for free for a Quake tournament.

I think Apogee started the whole Shareware thing but iD came out with selling the engine sdk component behind their games. I think at the time a few games bought out the wolf3d engine and made it into their own game. But it wasn't until Quake/Quake2 that it really took off. Quake2 engine powered into the whole Half-Life and various other games at the time and really brought iD a great fortune. Not sure about today's game world as I've been out of it for some time but looks like Unreal engine is the way to go.
