not sure if anyone cares but if you are stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all the new series on InstaFlixxer. I've been streaming with my gf during the lockdown xD
To think it took a high end gaming PC from 2004 that probably weighed between 20 to 30 pounds to run this game on high/ultra settings. Now a mobile device like the Switch can run the game at max graphics without issue. It's a crazy time to be alive.
Lol no. Back then you could render doom 3 with pentium3 1.4ghz and 512 of ram. A video card like fx5500. I would render at 1200x1080. Thats 1080p in 4:3 ratio. The switch can barely do 720p. Nintendo is fucked up for the price.
@bum bam lol no. Try being alive back then. Doom3 didnt even need a fast proc. Doom 3 even ran with model shader 2 just fine using the console alternate renderers.
Switch still drops frames. My “pc” handed down when my dad built a new one handled doom fine. When there was a lot going on it dropped frames but so does Nintendo lol
@@garden0fstone736 Switch might still drop frames but a high end gaming PC from 2004 to 2005 running Doom 3 on max settings dropped frames too. It's pretty impressive that the tiny portable Switch performs as good as a big, heavy and power hungry gaming PC from 2004 to 2005 era.
@@quattro4468 This is a late response but you're plain wrong in regards to my initial post, read it again. Im not talking about just trying to run the game at minimum specs. Im talking about running the game well on high/ultra settings. I had a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra paired with an Athlon 64 3400+ and the game struggled to maintain above 30 fps at 1024x768 on high settings. I had to replace my graphics card to a GeForce 6800 GT to run the game at 60 fps and even then there were frame drops. The Switch version of Doom 3 is basically the BFG edition running on Ultra settings at 720p 60fps. There's no way a GeForce FX 5500 with a 1.4ghz pentium 3 even compares, you're basically running the game at low settings at 25 to 30 fps with that setup. To put it into perspective the GeForce FX 5500 was basically just an overclocked GeForce FX 5200 which was weaker than a GeForce 3 Ti which is basically what the original Xbox had.
God I loved Doom3. I played it since it came out, all the way to about 2016. You can see the age of it, sure, but it still looks great! The normal mapping was something so new back in the day. Usually, games had at best bump mapping in cracks of a wall, or ice, but never really deep convex shapes. Anyway....just a brilliant, scary game.
I absolutely adore doom 3! The graphics and the design of each level has me looking at everything! I never pay that much attention to things in levels but it takes me twice as long to finish each one cause I'm always stopping and looking at stuff. I constantly go back to this game, it never gets old or boring. Damnit, now i want to play it again.
i did too and got killed and scared often hehe because i was loking at stuff trying to see how the polygon was and how it was made, often doing it today still when i play :D
The graphics for doom 3 were absolutely incredible for the time and I would argue that the lightning and shadowing effects still look much better than recent releases.
Doom 3 is still a brilliant game, the graphics engine has aged remarkably well plus it's great fun to play. I got it off Steam last year, did have to update the configuration file so it'll run in wide-screen at 1920x1080 with Ultra graphics but it looks badass
Play it on an OLED tv. Your gonna shit your pants and appreciate what this game offered graphically in 2004. Halo 2 og looks shit compared to doom 3(completely my personal opinion)
I'll always love this game, first time I played it I had to take breaks because I was so afraid. Its not perfect, but damn is it good. The atmosphere and the design of the mars base is so good, claustrophobic and feels real. Audio logs for world building, and the way the mars base gets corrupted over time as hell invade. If ID made another Doom in the horror style again I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I still have my Windows XP computer (severed from the Internet) so I can play DOOM 3. It is such a marvelous gem. I also play UNREAL on my XP. I also have DOOM 3 expansion.
DooM³ is possibly the best non-classic fps ever. It mixes horror with boomer shooter element with several modern features like free look, jumping, crouching and several NPCs. The primitive 3 color keycard system is replaced with more complex PDA with functional emails to give security clearance and several access to secrets. I once got BFG9000 way early by reading some email inside PDA and found the secrets through it.
A friend at the time guessed correctly, that the reason why Doom 3 won't be like the old Doom it's because the limited computer power at the time. By 2015 the power was there to recreate the monster rich environment. Doom 3 was a rite of passage for the FPS games.
16:19 Ridiculous how young Carmack looks and sounds here. That gives me hope that I'll still be looking like I'm in my early 20s at 33/34 haha. Reminds me of when my parents were in their 30s. The good old days (2000s).
Just got doom 3 along with eternal and I’m impressed with the fact that doom 3 still looks and plays so awesome, despite of it being so old the graphics, sound and gameplay aged so remarkably well. Still a great game worth playing a lot.
I installed some HD Texture mods and then the VR Mod for Doom 3 BFG Edition. It's really awesome to be in the game. Very immersive stuff. VR is really great in games like this.
Doom 3 is pretty cool. I've recently learned how to use the built-in editor for it, and I have to say, it's just like one of the guys said in the video, you can pretty much create anything you want. Well, almost anything... Lots of stuff to learn. But still, Doom 3 itself is a technological achievement.
Did you like the movie from that time as well...I did🤷🏻♂️😂. I can't cay doom 3 was my childhood but it was the reason I got a xbox. My computer would have taken more than the cost of a console. All my upgrades are software based. I got a Gamecube for Metroid Prime As stated xbox for Doom 3 The Orange Box 360 Xbox one rare replay I built my PC to play Diablo 3 Switch for Mario tennis(yup lol) And I choose the series X due to Scorn If they ever build a good diablo 4, returning to the masterpiece of diablo 2 formula I will build another PC. Assuming my current asus 670 gpu build won't run it that is. Diablo 3 was a huge let down for me. It was good but it was no diablo 2
I remember being blown away by the tech in Doom 3 but not the gameplay so much. It took a while to realise that it was a different game to Doom 1&2 rather than a true sequel. That said, I completed it at least twice. When it comes to divisiveness across fans, the elephant in the room was Half Life 2, which was released just 3 months after Doom 3. Whether one game is better than another is subjective, but Half Life 2 certainly have Half Life fans what they wanted where as Doom 3 tried to give Doom fans something new. I think that left a marked impact on Doom 3's reputation. I also seem to remember that my middling PC seemed to cope with HL2 more easily than Doom 3. There's a mod that allows you to play Doom 3 in VR now, so maybe its time to reinstall it and give it another go.
*THIS* is what I loved about the old G4. Game reviews, developer interviews, gaming history, etc. Not the short-lived abomination it became recently in its failed revival.
A still remember when I used to watch this video over and over again because I didn't even know how to beat the last boss. Also this game, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Peter Jackson's King Kong and TY The Tasmanian Tiger where my 4 favourite Xbox games back then and still are just waiting for a Remaster of King Kong
I really like Doom3, has a well achieved atmosphere that makes you feel the horror of what you're facing, the ambient sounds that complement it and the tigh corridors feeding the claustrophobia and uncertainty. I know it's not fast paced like classic Doom and the jumpscares bacome a bit tiresome, but overall, in graphics, animations, level desing, it looks really interesting and enjoyable
The amount of marketing in this video. They knew it wouldn't do great. If people today want to say it's underrated or not, they knew then it wouldn't do great.
I absolutely loved this game when it hit. I was 21 and just out of the JW cult. It was the juiciest, most succulent forbidden fruit and it scared the living shit outta me, i couldn't play it for longer than 15mins at a time. Haha.
I remember playing Doom the first one and that I had cheats for it 😆 But Doom 3, I did, in fact, sh** myself every time when the A.I was in the dark and I could not see it until it would hit me or dump me ect
10:53 This is part of the reason why Doom 3 is so divisive among fans. It's because Doom 3 meddles with what fans expect out of a Doom sequel. "It's very important that fans realize that this is not Doom 3, you know, after Doom II: Hell on Earth. This is Doom 3 whereas Doom and Doom II never happened." Well then don't put a 3 in the title. Marking it as a sequel inherently indicates that the previous two numbered games are relevant somehow, that there's some kind of standard to keep up to quality as a legitimate successor. It's not like the Quake series where each entry is drastically different from the last in some way yet still maintains some core elements. Doom I, II, the expansions and even Doom 64 were all fairly consistent with each other. A Doom standard was set, so of course people are immediately going uphold a new entry in the series to that same standard when they see a 3 in the title. That's why the Call of Doom version of Doom 4 got scrapped, Mart Stratton said "it didn't feel like Doom". That's also part of the reason why retail Doom 4 and later Doom Eternal were so successful. John Carmack wanted to make Doom 3 because he saw how successful Grey Matter's Return to Castle Wolfenstein was, it was a remake of Id Software's Wolfenstein 3D with (then) modern technology. In my opinion, I think the best thing Id Software could have done was to drop the 3 and give it a subtitle of some kind. That way the game could then exist more as it's own separate thing from the rest of the series and fans arguably wouldn't be so torn about how they changed Doom's core gameplay. In the original games the player was fast and powerful. Gabe Newell described it as "You're trying to become the most powerful thing in the universe", action was put first. In Doom 3 the player is slow and weak, you're the weakest thing in the universe because action is put last to horror. The game could be in its own separate canon that fans could ignore should they choose to, or else it could be worked into the canon and maybe optional. Given the new lore that Doom 4 and Doom Eternal offer, it's possible that Doom 3 could be woven into the series canon. Doom 3 takes place 100 years after the original game and Doom Guy sealed himself away in Hall at the end of Doom 64. By then Doom Guy would have been hanging out with the sentinels so the Doom 3 marine had to take his place during his absence. In addition to the dates, further examples that line up are the original UAC logo that appears on older more industrial parts of the Mars base and how Doom Guy appears on the Martian tablets that were excavated. In Doom Eternal it was revealed that the sentinels possessed teleportation technology via slipgates and they had colonized the core of Mars with cities like Hebeth. The Martian ruins in Doom 3 then would belong to the sentinels and would have been constructed after Doom Guy had joined them. Dr. Betrugar's devil worshipping also would have lead to the UAC becoming the demonic cult that it was in Doom 4 which takes place years after Doom 3 within the same century. Doom Guy's sarcophagus would be retrieved and he would eventually blast a gigantic BFG hole into Mars in Doom Eternal, so Doom 3 certainly cannot take place after Doom Eternal. This is my head canon, make what you will of it I don't care. Thanks for reading my essay.
Yeah I like DOOM 3 a lot. I replayed it countless times but... There were things I didn't like so much. OOPS... You didn't include the Spider Mastermind enemy in DOOM 3. I didn't like the fact that they entirely forgot to include again the "black" marine guy who exits the restrooms. He's literally the only one there and it just disapears.
The Cool Kids of the 80s: “I’m gonna push the boundaries of the industry by doing this” The Cool Kids of the 2010s: “I’m gonna sit on my ass and do nothing. Don’t judge me!”
Hindsight doom3 was great but overshadowed in my opinion by half life2. Doom 3 looked good but the source engine looked better and half life 2 has some of the best physics ever seen to date in gaming. However doom 2016 is one of the all time classics now and 5 days from now will be doom eternal cannot wait.
@14:40 interesting seeing them say how intense Doom 3 is, and say how they love the shotgun... turned out to be the slowest Doom (still great) but has the worst shotgun in all of video games.
Not only is the shotgun is truly horrendous with its shitty spray, but the gunplay overall really lacks. There’s no way to tell if you’ve landed a bullet on a target aside from the crosshair turning red and blasting a demon in the face won’t even make it flinch. Visually as well, there no force or impact of firing the weapon that conveys the power of the gun.
Doom 3 is a spectacular looking game, but it’s marred by clunky gameplay. Definitely keeps it out of the “timeless shooter” category. If only Doom 3 played as smooth, immersive and realistic as Far Cry or Quake 4…. Plus, the weapons design in Doom 3 is just AWFUL. The assault rifle and plasma gun are especially cumbersome and hard to use.
If DOOM 3 was a 6 hour experience it would had been way up there as one of the greats but it's double the time at about 12 hours and for a horror game it fails immensly because it overstays its welcome, if you are paying any attention at all to the loop of the game you get the sense that id Software put all their creative energy in making it look next generation but any gameplay was handed off to a team of gold fish because every 5 minutes DOOM 3 repeats the same enemy spawns, jump scares as if you never saw them before so after 12 hours of this you kind of go stir crazy because it's baffling how at hour 11 they are still introducing the Imp like it's a brand new monster. It's so hilarious how you work 90% of the first 6 hours in the UAC, the 7th hour you finally get to Hell which should be the end game and after beating a end game feeling boss it spits you back into the UAC enviroment for the next 5 hours making you do fetch quests and repeating the goldfish directed gameplay and ends with one of the worst boss battles in FPS history.
I mean, Romero literally invented the wad file. He wasn't a useless dud like you're making him out to be. Was carmack the engine? Literally yeah, but Romero was instrumental in that company.
@@thiagovidal6137 I thought it was quite fun and that it's a good DOOM game. I thought it had quite a good power fantasy. Made me feel quite powerful when I walked away from some of the encounters alive.
