Dr. Wolff, I agree with most that you say. The problem is the rise of alternate facts, with the decay of leadership and honor. Who should we turn to or how can we fight the rise of propoganda?

Richard!!! I don't have a problem at all with multiple viewpoints being available to the public. Also, we are in another seismic shift here in our political / social landscape, which is important to note. What I can't tolerate is the planned, intended production of propaganda by those that are all too aware that what they are producing is propaganda. Interestingly, this propaganda has the effect of advocating for those that have vastly more than the average person in the country - at the expense of the many. Are you going to discuss this too at this crucial point in our history?

We still have Charlie Hebdo here in France: a paper that has no real equivalent elsewhere in Europe except, perhaps, in Private Eye in the UK. The day Charlie Hebdo dies is the day France looses it's soul. My Dad used to read 'Le Canard Enchaîné' and it is still in print today! Yes, we do still have an array of views to dip in but people tend to stick to their political side and do not often credit the opposite one... unfortunately. Sure, but it's important that the various media sources are "fact based". The problem lately seems to be that some media outlets just seem to make stuff up to fit a particular narrative.

The mainstream media is defined by what it omits, not what it reports. Some are better than others at getting the facts right, but if you want the whole picture you need to find an accountable independent source. This channel informs a lot of my opinions; thanks, Doc.

Sometimes diversity is good. Sometimes any "diversity" is bad. The failure to recognize that there's no fixed way to look at different opinions is a core problem in the Western world.

So cool looking/reading from different points of view. This is true in all areas, whatever you need or want to know. But, it seems so antithetical to many people in the US who cling on to one source or person.

The news should be the news. Objectively reported.

Truth is an opinion based on the perceived conditions combined with prejudice to form a conscientious hypothesis of cause and effect which the persevere relies on as a constant of the moment. The question why is the path to the truth. Also, in a dynamic environment truth is not constant. It was this way of thinking that took America into the unforgiving atmosphere of space.

This wouldn't work in our country, unless we changed to a form of government with proportional representation so all the views can be properly represented. As it is, we have winner take all systems which result in 2 parties at opposite sides and divergent views are sidelined

It's important to understand that most working-class Americans aren't quite as divided as the major networks make us out to be. The main divide in American politics isn't a divide amongst its working people, it's a divide in the Ruling Class, symbolized by the sharp divisions between the Republican and Democratic parties. Many do not understand the divisions in the Ruling Class though. It's a fight between the ultra-wealthy and the wealthy. The Democrats represent the ultra-wealthy, the monopoly capitalists, the upper tiers of capital. These people just want stability and want to "manage" the empire. The Republicans, on the other hand, represent the wealthy, the lower tiers of capital. These are the people who feel crowded out by the big monopolies, and they wish to accrue huge profits so that they can join the upper tiers. They often present themselves to the American People as "small business," but they aren't. They are the box stores, the military contractors, private security firms, the frackers, the coal companies, the big mega-churches, the casinos etc. And it should come as no surprise that these are the folks who are protesting the hardest against the lockdowns, and the huge profits being raked in by the monopoly capitalists during this viral epidemic.

Thank you for a new perspective on the diversity of American News, I would like to know why the divisions of "left" and "right" are so ubiquitous in politics, is that description based on representative democracy vs direct democracy? what exactly do the descriptors "conservative" and "Liberal" entail? I imagine the answer is different for economic, social, and political theories but I don't know that I have ever heard a description of the exact difference between the parties...also is possible to examine political issues from a third or fourth perspective not described within the philosophy of Conservatives or liberals?

This diversity Prof. Wolff talks about really erupted out of the 2008 GFC. That single event was like Toto pulling back the curtain exposing The Wizard of Oz to be a crook. We are still in 2008, with no exit in sight.

I don't see a deep analysis of what is great about this observation

Diversity of news surely doesn’t mater if the way the news is reported is sloppy in the way it’s compiled, surely the only failsafe way is to have agreed ways of compiling news, once this is agreed, the electorate will get the choice they desire, it doesn’t matter if it’s left or right, it will be accurate to form an opinion that’s to the point.

The question remains, how do we get those with other world views than ours to watch this clip? All in hopes they may one day recognize that they have started countless arguments, if not fights, with friends and family members, in the name of such "truths."

I understand and share your optimism for an expanded, more objective information network. But I cannot help but wonder how long it will be before even this avenue for information is gobbled up, usurped and over-run by the self-directed and monied faction that has already prevailed.

Competition in the delivery of news about current events is, as Professor Wolff states, an out to be welcomed. That said, there is an ongoing, continuous need for fact checking. The sources of news to be trusted most are those who have a record of thorough fact checking.

Now, if the United States could have diversity with political parties. It would be nice to have more than two political parties points of view. US needs alternative political parties like when President Roosevelt was in office in the 1930s.

Good news the Corporatocracy is getting nervous. Now if we can get clean verifiable elections things will change.

I personally don’t like to straw-man the other side, which can be commonly found in different media outlets. I like to build the other side’s argument up the best I can and then tear it down. Although this strategy requires one to be well versed in the opposition’s logic.

I like Cspan, I feel they just report what is happening and no opinion by commentators, only the audience. But you can hear the talking points from MSM on both sides coming from the mouths of the public. It is interesting.

What's a news paper?

No worries. This thought was inspired by the Robert Redford spy thriller about encryption 'Sneakers' and "I know now why you cry, but it is something I can never do" from T2. Encryption is pretty abstract - maybe most abstract if it concerns Prime Numbers (the Riemann Hypothesis still remaning unproven) and whether numbers are socially 'constructed'. But thinking about the encryption technological arms race has recently really helped me understand Marxism and competition versus co-operation. Because with encryption there feels like there is a definate 'interaction' going on. Somekind of process (I am very aware of how people use the 'social construction' argument as a weapon against LGBT people for example, which in this interactive approach of encryption I am using doesn't seem as though it could be mis-used quite so easily?). Maybe there are better and much easier ways of looking at Marxism. But it really helped me anyway: for example, it seemed to me that if everybody had the same encryption technology then you wouldn't have an uneveness of technology in the market that would allow for the classic situation given by Marxists of surplus and profit occuring - before this I just had a simple conception of the labour theory of value and surplus without a reason really for there existence that didn't seem to get into a circular argument... Although, why you would encrypt anything does seem to be a subjective choice? - But, if you don't have encryption it is possible for information to be shared more easily (maybe it doesn't matter - in this example anyway - it that information is stolen or freely given?). Primes are completely random apparently (in terms of the total absence of formulas to predict them). So it does seem that any 'dead labour' can only number crunch to find Primes - and if you want to do this better you need to add 'living labour' to improve the number crunching ability. This is why it seemed like a good example to look at... But maybe it is a bit extreme? The less random the 'encryption' the easier it is to share, and so the less suited to competition it is. I guess at some point the information is no longer what we would call 'encryption' the less encrypted it becomes - until it is perhaps telling us something we can use, that we can use to make things with or communicate and properly co-operate. But perhaps this situation is no different to the situation I started with of if everybody had access to the same encryption technology, you would in theory have equality (no uneveness of technology that created surplus value and profit in the market)?

And what about Facebook?

Is it possible the increase of CNN rating is due to fact the signing of Andrew Yang as a political commentator? He is considered the best candidate by many in the democratic primary. His policies resonated with republicans, independents and progressive. Even 10% of the Trump supporters said they will vote for him over Trump if he is the democratic nominee.

as usual Prof Wolff is hitting the nail on its head... and just to add, what he says about the french is true for most of europe... we're traditionally very wary of the media here because we have a long memory for all the times they reported complete bs... also we know very clearly the difference between a report and an opinion... so a lot of the times, especially on important issues, one consults as many different news sources as possible and the discussion is about which of them is lieing this time...

Regarding France, although there’s diversity in msm as to domestic matters, there is a great deal of uniformity when it comes to international matters such as China, Russia, Syria, Iran where the agreed upon paradigm seems: “These are enemies and no matter their achievements or greatness they must be smeared and vilified “ . No variety of perspectives whatsoever when it comes to the aforementioned countries and Islam. The whole French media offer a uniform viewpoint on China, Russia, Iran, Africa, Islam and act as crusaders against these countries and religion. France sucks!

what get's on my goat is the co-ordination of the news channels ie running exactly the same stories as the other channels...i'd rather other lies about other things

They label you a socialist but effectively you're just another Democrat.

An “opening” but algorithms by Alphabet and other online sources are shown to lead to siloing of opinions. I would put myself in a minority in that I listen to Marxist opinions such as yourself and Capitalist perspectives such as Rebel Capitalist or MacroVision. I just don’t see from anecdotal experience most folks diversifying their sources.
